Romak and Friday Walk to Score; Paulino Homers

Checking in on Pirates' farmhands and friends in winter ball on Tuesday...

AFL: Scottsdale Scorpions 9, Peoria Javelinas 3

CF Brian Bogusevic (Astros) went 4-for-4 and LF Chris Pettit (Angels) went 3-for-5 to lead the Scorpions.  C Steve Lerud was hitless in 4 at-bats, and RF Jamie Romak walked twice and came around to score both times.  Scottsdale's scoring started in the 3rd inning, when 2B Drew Sutton (Astros) hit a solo homer.  In 4th inning,  Romak walked, and DH Mark Ori (Astros) and Bogusevic hit back-to-back triples, for 2 runs.  The Scorpions stole another run in the 5th -- Pettit led off with a single, stole second, stole third, and scored on the throwing error made as the Javelinas' C Matt Spring (Rays) tried to throw him out as he went into third base.  Spring had  the same problem in the next inning, when Bogusevic singled and stole second.  SS Kevin Frandsen's (Giants) single put Bogusevic on third base, and he scored when Spring made another throwing error trying to stop Frandsen from stealing second base.

The Javelinas made it 5-3 in the top of the 8th inning on a 2-run homer, but the Scorpions came back to score 4 runs in the bottom of the inning.  Romak led off with a walk, and went to second on a passed ball (not a good night for Spring).  Romak went to third on a ground out and scored on Bogusevic's fourth hit of the game.  Bogusevic stole second again, and scored on Frandsen's RBI single.  Frandsen also stole second base, and then Pettit singled and he stole second base.  A walk to Sutton loaded the bases, and 1B Mark Trumbo (Angels) singled to bring in Frandsen and Pettit.  The Scorpions stole a total of 7 bases (3 for Pettit).

Starter Kevin Pucetas (Giants) earned the win for the Scorpions, allowing only a homer in the 2nd inning, plus two more hits, over 5 innings of work.  Bud Norris (Astros) pitched 2 perfect innings of relief, and Alex Hinshaw (Giants) and David Herndon (Angels) also contributed one inning each.

HWL:  West Oahu Cane Fires 13, Honolulu Sharks 5

SS Brian Friday walked twice and scored twice as the Cane Fires took a bite out of the Sharks.  The Cane Fires scored 2 runs in the 1st inning, on two walks, a double by RF Caleb Grindl (Brewers), and a sacrifice fly by 3B Tyler Henson (Orioles).  The Sharks tied it up with two runs in the top of the 2nd inning, but the Cane Fires but it away with a 6-run 3rd inning.  The Cane Fires sent 12 batters to the plate, as the inning started with two fly outs.  Then Gindle,  1B Adam Loewen (Blue Jays), and Henson walked.  LF Cyle Hankerd (Diamondbacks) singled, bringing in 2 runs.  DH Logan Schafer (Brewers) walked to load the bases again, and C Chris Hatcher (Marlins) cleared the bases with a double.  Friday walked, CF Greg Burns (Marlins) singled, and Hatcher scored the 6th run of the inning.

The Cane Fires went on to score two more in the 5th and three in the 6th.  Friday led off the 5th inning with another walk, and went to second base on a balk.  He scored on 2B Mark Halberg's (Diamondbacks) single.  Three more walks forced in Halberg with another run.  Friday also led off the 6th inning by getting on base, this time on a fielding error.  A walk and a single by Halberg plated Friday, and a double by Gindl brought in two more runs.

Moises Robles pitched the final two innings for the Cane Fires.  He gave up a single and hit a batter in the scoreless 8th inning.  Robles' own missed catch error on a play at first base led to an unearned run in the 9th inning.

Venezuela:  Leones del Caracas 9, Tigres de Aragua 2
A homer by 2B Jesus Guzman (A's) and doubles by former Pirate 3B Jose Castillo and C Carlos Maldonado sparked a 4-run 1st inning for Caracas.  Castillo doubled again in the 2nd inning, and Maldonado and Guzman singled, as Los Leones scored 3 more runs, putting the game out of Aragua's reach.  C Raul Chavez was hitless in 3 at-bats for Aragua.  Ronald Uviedo pitched part of the 8th inning for Caracas.  He took the mound with one out, gave up a single, and then got the next two batters, with a fly out and a strikeout.

Mexican: Yaquis de Obregon 10, Algodoneros de Guasave 1
SS Luis Cruz started the game by working a walk, and came around to score, as Obregon put up 4 singles and a 3-run homer for 5 runs in the top of the 1st inning.  DH Jayson Nix (White Sox) hit another 3-run homer in the 3rd inning for Obregon, and a single, a walk, and a double gave them 2 more runs in the 7th.  Cruz singled in the 6th inning, but was forced out in a double play.

Dominican:
Azucareros del Este 5, Gigantes del Cibao 2
Los Azucareros were ahead 4-2 going into the bottom of the 7th inning, when Gigantes'  pitcher Satoshi Fukuda walked four straight batters, including two wild pitches.  Fukuda was replaced by Juan Perez, who got the first batter he faced to bounce back to the mound, where Perez started a 1-2-3 double play, keeping a run from scoring.  Perez  intentionally walked DH Andy Marte (Indians), and then got a strikeout to end the inning.

Aguilas Cibaenas 10, Tigres del Licey 5
DH Ronny Paulino homered and batted in 3 for Licey.  In the 4th inning, Indianapolis area native 1B Jake Fox (Cubs) led off with a single, advanced on a single and a fly out, and scored on Paulino's sacrifice fly.  Paulino walked in the 7th inning, but was out on a double play.  Los Aguilas scored 6 runs in the 8th inning, getting things started off former Pirate farmhand Franklyn German.  A double, two walks, and a wild pitch made German responsible for 3 runs, and another double and a homer after German had been sent to the showers added up to 6 runs.  Licey rallied in the 9th, with Franquelis Osoria on the mound for Los Aguilas.  Paulino hit a 2-run homer, and a walk and two more singles meant Osoria was responsible for 3 runs (2 earned), but it was not enough for Licey to catch up.
