David Beckham #5 on FORBES’ new list of most powerful celebrities
Becks has already been voted MLS Player of the Week twice so far in this season
FORBES’ latest ‘power’ list, released Wednesday, is their annual list of most powerful celebrities (official name ‘The Celebrity 100′).
The power ranking is arrived at by evaluating the individual in four categories…
Pay including base salaries plus endorsements, Web presence and searches , general Press coverage, and TV/Radio presence via coverage, appearances, advertising.
GALAXY midfielder David Beckham landed at number five on this year’s list, trailing only Oprah Winfrey, Tiger Woods, Angelina Jolie, and Beyonce Knowles.
Beckham’s rise in clout and popularity due to many factors including his initial arrival in the USA, his increasing stature with - and impact on - his club team (now in first place in the Western Conference), increasing endorsement deals of all sorts from Sharpie markers, to Motorola phones and Bluetooth headsets, and the requisite Galaxy merchandise.
His mainstream news media presence includes countless 2008 profiles on networks from CBS to CNN and ESPN, recent related TV series on NBC and FOX, and talk show appearances with Jay Leno, Ellen Degeneres, and many others, including only this week, ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel.
Best of all, several notable honors for his play on the pitch have come his way in the past several weeks. He was recently awarded his 100th cap with England, and he was also voted MLS Player of the Week twice so far this year by journalists in the 11-week old season. He is one of the league’s stats leaders in both goals and assists at the moment.
Since this ranking is based on his past year’s rise in stock, things are looking good for him to stay high on the list for the 2009 evaluation.
