Pachuca return to defend their North American SuperLiga title; last year, they defeated the LA Galaxy in the Final.

The North American SuperLiga 2008 Championship is a summer tournament featuring the four top teams from each of the first divisions of Mexico and the USA…
Here are the Major League Soccer teams and their 2007 awards:

MLS Cup runners-up and US Open Cup Champions

Western Division: best record in regular-season
DC United -
Eastern Division: best record in regular season and Supporters Shield Winners (league’s best overall record in regular season)

…will join the three top finishers from the most recent Apertura (opening) and Clausura (closing) regular seasons…

Eight clubs – four each from the top-flight leagues of the United States and Mexico – will vie to determine a singular champion of North America. The club that emerges SuperLiga™ champion will take home $1 million in prize money, the largest purse in North American soccer history.”
“During the inaugural edition of SuperLiga, CF Pachuca defeated the Los Angeles Galaxy in a dramatic match decided by penalty kicks at The Home Depot Center…this new competition between rival soccer nations became an instant hit among millions of soccer fans in Mexico and the United States.”
Some of you may remember that one of the 2007 SuperLiga semifinals also got a great deal of publicity; the reason - it was the occasion of David Beckham’s first-ever Galaxy goal (and they won, defeating DC United 2-0).

The entire tournament will be available in English online courtesy MLS, and in Spanish exclusively on TV via the Telefutura network. Many other video features will be available on the official website, include pre- and post- match interviews and highlights. (My favorite MLS team is the New England Revolution, and since they are doing so well in regular league play, I am going to also be a believer that they can go all the way and take the SuperLiga Championship - and the $ 1 million prize - come August 5…)

chicago fire should be in it. more fans equals better revenue for the league. plus with blanco playing mexican teams, things will be more interesting. fire is better than a lot of the teams playing

Fire didn’t meet any of the the qualification requirements, though.
They would have needed to be in the MLS Cup Final and/or finish at top of Conference table to be in.
