When I heard that the rumors last summer that the Boston Bruins might have been interested in Tomas Kaberle the first question out of my mouth was why? I am just hoping that Boston Bruins aren’t one of the 10 teams in the mix for Tomas Kaberle this summer. While I know Kaberle is highly regarded by some, I have never been a big fan of him and he doesn’t really stand out as being the type of defenseman that I would want to build my team around. Sure he had 7 goals – 42 assists – 49 points in 82 games last season but he was also a -16. Basically another offensive only defenseman that lacks grit and get caught up ice too much. No thank you, he isn’t worth 4.25 million in my opinion.

“I think it’s 50-50. If I get the phone call that says he’s been moved to X team, I wouldn’t be surprised. But, having said that, I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if the clock ticks midnight (Sunday) night and he’s still a Toronto Maple Leaf,” said Curran, who spoke with Burke Saturday morning.

The Arbitration hearing is over and the decision has been made. It will be interesting to see what happens now, the Chicago Blackhawks have cap issues and not a lot of room to work with.

An arbitrator has set Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Antti Niemi’s salary at $2.75 million, according to a report on ESPN.com

The Hawks now have 48 hours to decide whether they want to walk away and make Niemi an unrestricted free agent immediately, or accept the arbitrator’s decision and sign Niemi at that salary for one season. The Hawks could also accept the decision, sign and then trade the goalie.

Niemi was expected to seek at least $3 million, after making $827,000 last season while leading Chicago to the Stanley Cup title. Because of salary-cap constraints, the Hawks were believed to be seeking a decision in the $2 million range. [TSN.CA]

Ok, this free agency period is really really boring. I was hoping for more excitement, perhaps some movement. But, alas, it’s just another typical off season.

There was some tidbits of news:

The NY Rangers are close to signing Frolov. This guy isn’t anything special anymore. He was pretty dynamic pre-NHL and his rookie year. I thought he’d be an Anze Kopitar or an Alexander Semin type. Instead, his offensive production has decreased consistently the past 3 years. It will be interesting to see how he could possibly succeed in underachieving even worse than he did before. Then again, he’s in the second best team to accomplish this feat as a forward (only Montreal’s forwards can underachieve more).

Aron Aasham (sp?) is trying to return to Philly. The question is: Has Aasham reappeared yet from his Copperfield impersonation during the postseason?
