Tigers sign Alexis Gomez to minor league deal

You know how you can tell it's a slow time in the offseason? I'm not the only one of the Tiger bloggers talking about their signing of Alexis Gomez to a minor league deal. There is some chatter about him possibly filling a temporary role as a lefty bat in the outfield, but I really can't see the Tigers choosing Alexis Gomez over any of Brent Clevlen, Marcus Thames or Ryan Raburn. I don't care what side of the plate they bat from.

If you disagree, let's think about this. The Tigers are going to have four bench spots like always. One of those goes to Matt Treanor. Another one goes to a backup shortstop, who we'll assume is going to be Ramon Santiago. I think the Tigers will probably try Jeff Larish as their backup for the corner spots. Another possibility would be letting Raburn be the backup third baseman/outfielder, but I think the Tigers will prefer Larish's lefty bat. Regardless, that leaves you with one outfield spot. How do you give that spot to a guy who's 30 years old and whose career minor league line is .279/.331/.419 despite a vast majority of his at bats coming in the Texas and Pacific Coast Leagues.

No, I think this move is to shore up Toledo's outfield. They seem likely to have Wilkin Ramirez and Casper Wells on the corners and if Brent Clevlen is on the big club or doesn't clear waivers they suddenly are a little short on viable Triple A outfielders. Personally, I think they almost certainly can do better than Gomez but the Tigers seem to have a bad habit of assuming players go into suspended animation after they leave the organization.

This isn't a move to get excited about and it won't be a bad move unless they compound it by actually putting him on the 40-man. Doing so would mean they chose him over a player who would almost certainly be more valuable to the team. Even if they trade Thames, lose Clevlen to waivers and send Larish back down to the minors they can almost certainly do better than Alexis Gomez.

Another dumb move, especislly the future which is in my opinion the following: Brent Clevlen, Jeff Larish lh, Dusty Ryan, Wilkin Ramirez, Casper Wells, Cale Iorg, Danny Worth, Kyle Peter lh, Andy Dirks lh, Brent Wyatt switch, As soon as you see something at a level such as Kyle Peter at West Oahu, Casper Wells at Erie and Mesa, move them up another level. Stop with the stop gaps like Everett, Treanor, Gomez, Next I'll talk about the pitching mistakes especially giving Willis a chance agsinst lh batters until he gains cofidence and shows something. Have a good time with this Mark A.

Its not that I'm going to have a good time with it, Stephen. What you don't address though, is that the signing of Gomez in no way negatively impacts any of the players you listed. Clevlen is out of options and either likely to make the MLB roster on Opening Day, or be lost on waivers. Therefore, Gomez's signing does not impact him. Ramirez is destined for Toledo and has little or no shot at Detroit unless there are a rash of injuries in spring training. Given the lack of outfielders in Toledo, the Gomez signing does not impact him. Wells will have a chance to make the Toledo roster, but could also go back to Erie. The Gomez signing does not negatively impact him. Of the other outfielders you listed -- Peter, Dirks, and Wyatt -- none of them even project to touch Erie this year, let alone Toledo where Gomez will be. Therefore, this signing does not effect them. The other players listed are not even outfielders, so the Gomez signing really doesn't impact them in any fashion.

I understand you have this firm belief that prospects need to be pushed at accelerated rates, but the signing of Gomez to a minor league contract to help fill out the Toledo roster, does not negatively impact any of the players you listed, and does nothing to negatively impact the future of the organization. It's an organization signing a known commodity who they've liked in the past, to fill a role and a roster spot at Toledo....that's it, nothing more. Organizations do this all the time, and there is nothing wrong with it.

There has to be more moves coming. I think Larish might be moved. I like to see Larish make the team because I would like to see Roberson and Strieby move up. I think they should have resigned Perez, who have two excellent years at AAA, and speedy Guzman.

Many thanks to Matt and Mark A for all. Keep in mind that the original thought on Kyle Peter, Brent Wyatt and Andy Dirks came from Matt on his of list. I just want to move faster when they really perform. Kyle Peter .370 at West Oahu and Casper Wells who should get a good look in spring training based on Erie and Mesa. Ijust want Peter, Wyatt, and Dirks to start at Lakeland so they have a shot at Erie. If they don"t do it, they don"t get it. Thanks to Barry on Ryan Roberson and Ryan Strieby on move ups to see if they can do it. They could always be used in a trade for a pitcher. Jeff Larish has to be given more of a chance based on lh hitter, Toledo, Mesa and clutch hitting at Detroit.

The problem with prospects is it takes a while to see whether it's real performance or small sample noise. Kyle Peter in Hawaii may have turned a corner or he may have had four or five extra hits scoot through the infield.

As for Larish, I wouldn't mind if they traded him in theory but I think they'd find he seems more valuable than who'd they'd get for him.

Matt - I seem to recall you doing a "where will they play" series last year. Do you have plans to do that again?

Yeah, I was going to work on something else but when I was doing the top stories of last year post I realized I was well into that series by this time last year. It's good to wait as long as possible though, just to keep yourself from looking silly. :)

Well, save the relief pitchers, it's not as if the Tigers have overwhelming depth. The biggest challenge is deciphering how they'll assign the middle infielders, as so many are coming of injuries. Also, it'll be interesting to see how they handle the pitchers who were injured for all of last year, such as McBride, Jensen, Gerbe, Furbush, etc.

I'm lookong forward to seeing "Where will they play", especially where the Tigers have a need like catcher ss, lh batters and relief pitchers. WAlso how much performance and for how long do tou think they'll need to advance during the season. Also do tou think an early move up to Erie can get them to the Tigers that much earlier.I personaqkky half to two thirds of a season is sufficient if we see .290 to .300 so vs. k and the Tiger need is great. As for who to eliminate I would at who's not performing at Erie. Erie is the key to me and Lakeland as soon as possible. What do you and Mark A as well as Barry think?

In case my last comments got fouled up in transmission, Im not only interested in Matt's Where will they be, more importantly where they should be espesially the relief pitchers and my sleeper, Thad Weber. I suggest Erie for all as soon as they perform wherever they put them. If the Lakeland crew does it at Erie, pat attention Tigers. Also if Brett Jacobson does well at Lakeland get him to Erie. If Anthony Shawler does well at Lakeland as well as Thad Weber get them to Lakeland. Get Casey Fien to the Togers based on the Spring. As for my big potential 3, namely Andy Dirks, Brent Wyatt and Kyle Peter, get them to Lakeland so we can see Erie. Remember they're lh and switch. I'm looking for the shoulds not the wills.
