Bengals Mini-Camp Wraps: Signings Continue

The Bengals mini-camp is now complete and the optimism surrounding the team appears to have carried through the weekend. Some will say the rejuvenated passing attack was the story of the weekend, but personally, surviving the workouts without a major incident or injury is the best news of the weekend. After all, you can talk up a breakout player or how the team appears to be executing well but at this early stage it is hard to get a good read on those items. Mini-camp is about acclimating, evaluating and learning. By all accounts the workouts were productive and nearly injury free (Dan Santucci had a minor injury but then again he is always hurt).

Other Mini-Camp Bites:

- After year's of waiting until the last minute to signing its rookies the Bengals finally seem to believe in the benefit of signing some of its rookies prior to training camp. There is no reason to wait to sign the late round picks who basically sign slotted deals and the team had some early success this year. Already in the fold are sixth rounders Bernard Scott and Morgan Trent and seventh rounders Clinton McDonald and Freddie Brown.

- On the negative front, the early word is OT Andre Smith has "holdout" written all over him. Hearing this is esp. frustrating considering QB Mark Sanchez selected just one pick earlier is already signed. Of course, Sanchez's QB contract could be exactly the reason why Andre is a potential holdout.

- Rookie DE/OLB Michael Johnson has gotten rave reviews but will still have the "prove it" tag come training camp. He is a physical marvel but the rigors of training camp is more likely to show his "toughness" issues than a drill oriented mini-camp. Workout warriors excel in drills. One thing i found interesting was the how much attention Johnson received from special team's coaches during field goal drills during the "open practice" on Saturday.

- Chad Ocho Cinco looked silly in his orange pants on a 90 degree day but looked to be working harder than at any time during the 2008 training camp (of course that is not saying much).

- Carson Palmer's elbow appears to have survived the camp without any problems.

- Why does a team cut its 4th quarterback (camp arm) if its starting quarterback is coming back from an elbow injury and possibly limiting his throws?

- The most surprising development of the camp was talk of Jordan Palmer possibly beating out JT O'Sullivan for the backup quarterback job. O'Sullivan may not be perfect but is a better player than last year's backup Ryan Fitzpatrick (esp. in the arm strength category). Jordan on the other hand did not even get to play meaningful snaps in a pre-season game a year ago. I am not saying it can't happen but Jordan is going to need to shine in pre-season game action before that discussion even starts.

- When Geoff Hobson is giving less than glowing reviews of 2008 2nd round pick Jerome Simpson it is time to get worried. Personally, Simpson is a great athlete who needs time and reps to shine and he is not going to get that in a crowded receiving corp.

- Speaking of the wide receivers the team's veteran trio of Cinco, Coles and Henry could make it hard for Andre Caldwell to see meaningful playing time as well.

- I will close with my Father's Day Bengals story: On Saturday, I headed down to the Pro Shop with my 18 month old , Rudy, to get a gift for my dad. I had totally disregarded the select a seat event because i already have seats but was pleasantly surprised to see the stadium was open and the team was on the field for its final Mini-Camp practice. As a result, Rudy and I watched the team practice from my seats (at least until he said they were "hot!"). We then moved a little closer and watched the team for twenty minutes or so (he actually sat still on my lap). Of course, being an 18 month old he mostly enjoyed touring the stadium, climbing steps and drinking from every drinking fountain he could find. Even if I did not get to watch as much practice as I would have like the joy of showing off the Jungle to Rudy for the first time was a special Father's Day treat. I hope all the dad's out enjoyed a similar pleasant experience this weekend.

Optimism Is the Talk As Bengals Mini-Camp Nears

After the first week of free agency the Bengals had lost arguably their best player in WR TJ Houshmandzadeh along with (overrated) RT Stacy Andrews and the here we go again negativity was in vogue. Fast forward 3 1/2 months and the negativity has been replaced with genuine optimism not seen since the team's playoff season. It's gotten so good the "Ocho Cinco" even showed up for an OTA or two (ok let's not get ahead of ourselves).

So why has the vibe changed so drastically in such a short time:

1. No arrests or player outbursts in the media has left the focus on the field. It's early but the lack of distractions can only help.

2. A draft to get excited about. You can debate an individual selection or two from the team's draft but in general the team filled its top needs on draft day with top talents with upside (and risk). MLB Rey Maualuga was a gift in round 2 but the key will be how well the team develops RT Andre Smith, DE Michael Johnson and C Jonathan Luigs each of whom plays a position of need.

3. An active off-season. The team moved quickly to sign WR Laveranues Coles to replace TJ Houshmandazadeh and give the team a solid veteran possession receiver. They followed up the signing with two bargain basement additions in low risk high reward guys S Roy Williams and DT Tank Johnson. One tidbit you probably don't know is that the Bengals are still poised to receive compensation picks for TJ and Stacy Andrews because all three players the team signed were cut by their former team's meaning they won't count against the Bengals in the formula used to determine comp picks.

4. Carson appears to be healthy and has shown signs of seizing a leadership role. His calling out of Chad Ocho Cinco was politically correct but long overdue.

5. The Ocho actually appeared at an OTA practice.

Stories to Watch At Mini-Camp:

1. The play of the restructured offensive line: Will Nate Livings and Kyle Cook maintain their starting gigs or will Anthony Collins and Jonathan Luigs close the gap. Say what you want about the offensive line's top end talent but the competition and depth is better than it has been in recent years.

2. How the talented wide receiver unit shakes out. Even without the Ocho the Bengals receivers were a talented lot. Is Coles a good fit for the scheme? Has Chris Henry really re-dedicated himself to the game? Can 2008 draftees Andre Caldwell and Jerome Simpson find a way to contribute and live up to their draft status? Does the Ocho still have it?

3. Can we get a read on the running back situation behind Cedric Benson. Beyond Benson there is an aging Kenny Watson and a lot of question marks. Don't forget Benson is far from a sure thing himself.

4. Do the Bengals have the players they need to improve an anemic pass rush? Antwan Odom has supposedly put on a lot of weight (not necessarily a good thing) and Robert Geathers' micro-fracture is the biggest story no one is talking about. Even at 100% this duo of high priced talent is a question mark. The depth behind them is a combination of raw but talented (Michael Johnson), hard working but injury prone (Jonathan Fanene) and on the verge of bust status (Frostee Rucker). Mike Zimmer made major strides with a patchwork defense last year but it is hard to believe the defense will be able to take the next step without being able to turn up the heat on opposing passers.

5. Where and how soon does Rey Maualuga break into the starting lineup?

6. Is there any depth at cornerback?

7. How does Roy Williams fit into the team's plans at safety?

The Ocho Makes an OTA Appearance

The Bengals optimistic optimism just received another (hopefully) pleasant surprise as wide receiver Chad Ocho Cinco made his first OTA appearance since 2007. Only time will tell what this means in the big picture but it is refreshing to report positive news regarding Chad for the first time in a long time.

Did Chad realize the only person he was really hurting was himself (we already know the team argument doesn't work)? Could it be he realized he stunk last year and needs to redeem himself? Was it the realization that he needed to begin building some positive buzz if he hopes to be the start of "Hard Knocks"? As long as Chad is practicing, listening to coaches and not disrupting it does not really matter.

As for his plea for fans, Chad needs to realize for as harsh as he feels the Bengal media and fans can be, they will be equally forgiving if he starts putting up numbers and providing his signature touchdown dances.

Chad Ocho Cinco Ruining a Hall of Fame Career?

On September 11, 2007 Chad Johnson performed his Future HOF touchdown celebration. At the time Chad was one of the top 5 wide receivers in the league and in the midst of his sixth consecutive 1,000 yard receiving season. While the gimmick was silly it was also seemed possible. Flash forward 20 months and Chad has lost his last name (for the silly Ocho Cinco) and many are questioning whether he has also lost his game after a 520 yard season. The Hall of Fame possibility is on the brink of flaming out thanks to a case of "me" instead of "we".

In 2008 he attempted to complain his way out of town when the team called his bluff, he showed up out of shape and out of sync. With his legacy on the line, one would expect him to re-dedicate himself and rebuild his reputation. Instead, he has avoided the team's phone calls like the plaque while costing himself $250,000 in workout bonuses for the 2nd consecutive season.

Former teammate Eric Ghiaciuc (now with Kansas City) stated what we already knew but the team refuses to say with the following:

As much as you try to focus on football with your day-to-day routine of meetings, lifting, walkthroughs, practices, games, you can focus but it's still there behind you. I think we were doing our best to focus on what we needed to be focused on in our profession, but it was there and it was a problem.

This on top of Carson Palmer's comments a few weeks ago regarding Chad and you know all is not right in Bengal-land. In an off-season of optimism, Chad remains the poison pill which could spoil it all.

One could view the presence of "Hard Knocks" is either a blessing or a curse. On the plus side, Chad might actually want to work hard and hog the spotlight. On the negative side, Chad's poor practice habits and distractions could also be available for all to see.

At this stage, Chad may need to realize he needs the team as much if not more than the team needs him. After all, the team appears to have some depth at wide receiver but Chad's legacy not to mention Hall of Fame hopes are on life support (Art Monk barely made it). The sooner Chad learns that the better it is for not only the Bengals but himself.

2009 NFL Draft Grades - All 32 Teams

After talking about speculation regarding the draft for weeks TV and
radio commentators often wrap up their draft coverage by griping about
why grades are a foolish endeavor to feed our need for instant
gratification. They are correct when they say you can't truly grade a
draft for three years but they rarely follow it up by grading the 2006
draft (hint: anybody can tell you how a team did three years later).
Enough of my babbling. After writing mock drafts, profiles, articles
and rankings for the last six months, I just want to do grades because
I want to know how well I did three years from now (hint: I was wrong
about the 2008 Falcons draft. Really wrong) plus its fun so here goes
in grade order:

(click on the team name for pick by pick analysis of the entire team and access to each players profile)

Grade: A

Philadelphia Eagles
- Tremendous draft for Andy Reid and company. First, they filled their
biggest need (LT) trading the 28th overall pick (and change) for LT
Jason Peters. They followed it up on draft day, by getting Andy Reid
to drink from the skill position kool-aid by adding the #2 wide
receiver in Jeremy Maclin and the draft's best Brian Westbrook clone in
LeSean McCoy. TE Cornelius Ingram could also be a great 5th round
value.

Grade: A-

Cincinnati Bengals
- A potentially franchise altering draft for the Bengals. As usual the
Bengals stood pat but managed to avoid the reaches of previous drafts.
Andre Smith is a gamble at #6 but he has talent and fills the team's
top need. MLB Rey Maualuga is a defensive difference maker in round
2. Michael Johnson would have been a huge gamble in round 1 but is top
pass rushing talent well worth the risk in round 3. TE Chase Coffman,
C Jonathan Luigs and P Kevin Huber will all be given the opportunity to
contribute early as well. This grade gets an asterisk because for all
its talent it remains a bit on the high risk/high reward side.

Seattle Seahawks
- Added two top talents in LB Aaron Curry and C Max Unger plus they
gained a 2010 1st round pick in the process. Also made three nice
value picks in round 7 in DE/LB Nick Reed, S Courtney Greene and TE
Cameron Morrah.

Grade: B+

Chicago Bears
- The Bears ranked among the winners of the draft after trading for QB
Jay Cutler but also managed to add good value on draft day despite not
having a first round pick. Third rounders DT Jarron Gilbert and WR
Juaquin Iglesias filled needs while 4th round CB/S DJ Moore was one of
the best value picks in the entire draft.

Indianapolis Colts
- No team builds its team through the draft better than Indianapolis
and its 2009 class is no different. Joseph Addai's struggles showed
they need another running back and Donald Brown is a tremendous fit for
their offense. They were in desperate need for help at defensive
tackle and added two possible starters in Fili Moala and Terrence
Taylor. Like Donald Brown, WR Austin Collie is a great scheme fit.

Grade: B

Atlanta Falcons
- They filled top offensive need when they traded a 2010 2nd rounder
TE Tony Gonzalez allowing them to fill needs at DT and S with the early
selections of DT Peria Jerry and S William Moore. Defensive end
Lawrence Sidbury is a high upside 4th rounder but cornerbacks
Christopher Owens and Williams Middleton were questionable selections.

Baltimore Ravens
- Year in and year out, Ozzie Newsome and his staff do an excellent job
of reading the draft. This year they traded up for OT Michael Oher
and fill a need along the offensive line. DE Paul Kruger is one of the
best all-around (and most underrated) defensive ends in the draft and
should be a nice pass rushing complement to Terrell Suggs. CB
Lardarius Webb, ILB Jason Phillips and RB Cedric Peerman were all nice
selections as well. The only thing missing was a wide receiver.

Cleveland Browns
- Failed to find a taker for WR Braylon Edwards but showed creativity
in trading out of the #5 spot and trading down two more times in round
one to add picks. C Alex Mack was a surprise but follows the blueprint
Mangini used in New York. WR Brian Robiskie has the skills to
contribute quickly as a possession receiver. WR Mohommed Massaquoi
and DE David Veikune were questionable 2nd rounders. Their 6th
rounders (Don Carey, Coye Francies and James Davis were nice values.
Don't underestimate the value of the players they acquired in traded as
DE Kenyon Coleman and S Abram Elam fill needs while Brett Ratliff could
be a darkhorse candidate in the QB derby.

Green Bay Packers
- Getting NT BJ Raji at #9 was a gift for a Packers team making a
transition to a 3-4 defense. OLB Clay Matthews is more solid than
spectacular outside but his effort and coverage skills will earn him a
starting job. TJ Lang and Jamon Meredith are good day two prospects
for a team in need of replacing its tackles in the near future.

Houston Texans
- Filled needs early with LB Brian Cushing, DE Connor Barwin and C
Antoine Caldwell. Also, added nice value late including safeties
Glover Quin and Troy Nolan plus TEs Anthony Hill and James Casey.

Minnesota Vikings
- Pushed aside character to select WR/KR Percy Harvin whose addition to
the offense should open things up a little for RB Adrian Peterson and
take pressure off their questionable quarterbacks. Right tackle Phil
Loadholt fills a major need as did the selection of cover corner Asher
Allen. 5th rounder Jasper Brinkley could a 5th round steal if his knee
is healthy and he keeps his weight in check.

New York Giants
- While WR Hakeem Nicks is compared to Anquan Boldin, the Giants would
have been better off with the real thing (or Braylon Edwards). Overall
the Giants added a lot of receiving talent in Nicks, Ramses Barden and
Travis Beckum. Each of whom is a tall red zone target. OT William
Beatty could be their left tackle of the future and RB Andre Brown
should challenge for Derrick Ward's carries. OLB Clint Sintim is not a good fit for a 4-3 (just like fellow Virginia linebackers Darryl Blackstock and Ahmad Brooks weren't).

Tennessee Titans
- Added the best route runner in the draft with Kenny Britt who
combined with 3rd round TE Jared Cook should enhance the passing game
and red zone efficiency. DT Sen Derrick Marks adds depth and
penetration ability to their Haynesworth-less defensive line. CB Ryan
Mouton, LB Gerald McRath, G/T Troy Kropog and RB Javon Ringer were
solid selections as well.

Grade B-:

New England Patriots
- While everyone praises the Patriots for how well they have traded
down and accumulated picks during the past three drafts, they fail to
mention how poorly the Pats have done outside of round 1 the past two
years. Adding two 2010 2nd round picks was nice but considering they
had five day one picks entering the draft I expected more. The
Patriots did add some nice developmental players in NT Ron Brace, S
Patrick Chung, CB/PR Darius Butler, and OLB Tyrone McKenzie. OT
Sebastian Vollmer was a surprise 2nd rounder but he was the sleeper
lineman in the draft and has left tackle potential. WR/KR Brandon Tate
is a nice talent but is further proof that the Patriots don't value
character anymore than other teams. The failure to land a 3-4 rush
linebacker was a surprise in a draft deep at the position.

New York Jets
- Mike Tannenbaum and the Jets are the anti-Patriots. While the
Patriots accumulate picks, the Jets can't give them away fast enough.
Joking aside, the Jets got their top target in Mark Sanchez in a
creative package that did not include a 2010 draft pick. Trading up
to get Shonn Greene was a solid move considering Thomas Jones' age and
contract situation. That said they only had 3 picks giving them just
11 selections in three years and they did not add any talent to a wide
receiver position in need of a deep threat. Ultimately Mark Sanchez
will make or break this draft.

St. Louis Rams
- Did well in rounds 1 and 2 filling their needs for a LT and MLB with
top talents Jason Smith and James Laurinaitis but their day 2
selections were nothing special.

Grade: C+

Arizona Cardinals
- RB Beanie Wells fills the team's need for a power back to provide
balance to the offense in round 1. 2nd rounder OLB Cody Brown could
fill their pass rusher need down the road. S Rashad Johnson was a solid
pickup in round 3. G Trevor Canfield could also be a nice late round
pick. After years of loving the Cardinals drafts on paper, this one
looks more solid than special.

Jacksonville Jaguars
- They did an excellent job of filling their needs at offensive tackle
with Eugene Monroe and Eben Britton. Also took the anti-Matt Jones
route by selecting two undersized but true wide receivers in Mike
Thomas and Jarrett Dillard in the middle rounds. Trading a 2010 2nd
rounder for CB Derek Cox feels like a reach and DT Terrence Knighton is
not likely the answer inside.

Miami Dolphins
- Did a great job upgrading their top need by drafting big, physical
corners Vontae Davis and Sean Smith. QB Pat White is a perfect fit for
the wildcat who could some day press Chad Henne for the starting job.
Patrick Turner was a major reach in round 3 as were several of their
day two selections. I do like the pick of Brian Hartline (although a
round early), he is fundamentally sound like teammate Brian Robiskie
and has the look of a quality special teamer.

Grade: C

Detroit Lions
- Added the best QB, TE and S in the draft in Matthew Stafford, Brandon
Pettigrew and Louis Delmas but struggled to get tough in the trenches
on day two. How a team allowing the 2nd most sacks in the league (52)
can fail to add an offensive lineman to protect their $41 million
investments until round 7 is beyond me.

Kansas City Chiefs
- Scott Pioli deserves credit for acquiring Matt Casell for his 2nd
rounder and getting a 2010 2nd round pick for Tony Gonzalez but had a
pedestrian draft weekend with the Chiefs. Failing to trade down made
him reach for DE Tyson Jackson at #3. Jackson is a good prospect but
drafting a 3-4 DE in the top 5 is the same as taking a guard or center
in the top 5. DE Alex Magee was a surprise in round 3 which
emphasized the team's need to get tougher up front. The rest of day
two was highlighted by the hope of small schoolers WR Quinton Lawrence
and RB Javarris Williams and the boom/bust selection of CB Donald
Washington.

New Orleans Saints
- The Saints traded away most of this draft last year for Jonathan
Vilma and Jeremy Shockey last year but managed to add the top secondary
player in the draft in Malcolm Jenkins. The 4th round Demon Deacon duo
of Chip Vaughn and Stanley Arnoux adds needed depth to the defense.

San Diego Chargers
- Passing on Rey Maualuga and the running backs in round one was a bit
of a surprise but some considered DE./OLB Larry English the best pass
rusher in the draft. Considering Shawne Merriman is coming off of a
serious knee injury and is a year away from free agency the Chargers
figured it best to get another pass rusher now. In the later rounds
they added an intriquing nose tackle prospect in Vaughn Martin out of
Canada and two solid offensive linemen in Louis Vasquez and Tyronne
Greene. Gartrell Johnson is a poor man's Michael Turner. Failing to
add an offensive tackle or middle linebacker was a surprise.

San Francisco 49ers
- The wide receiver needy 49ers were thrilled to get Michael Crabtree
in round one. Also received a 2010 1st round pick in exchange for
their 2nd rounder which will pay dividends in the long run but hindered
their ability to fill immediate needs. RB Glen Coffee was a bit of a
reach in round 3 but filled a need. Best values of day 2 with LB Scott
McKillop and DT Ricky Jean-Francois.

Washington Redskins
- Almost received an A for managing to get through the draft without
trading any 2010 picks but common sense prevailed. Having pass rushing
DE Brian Orakpo drop to them in round 1 was a pleasant surprise. Aside
from CB Kevin Barnes the rest of day two felt ordinary at best.

Grade: C-

Buffalo Bills
- If you give team's credit for their trade additions you have to
penalize them for their trade subtractions. The loss of Jason Peters
hurt the offensive line and despite the selections of C Eric Wood and G
Andy Levitre, the tackle position remains a problem. DE Aaron Maybin
is a good pass rusher but is a risky pick at 11th overall due to his
lack of size and experience. CB Jairus Byrd was a surprise 2nd round
selection who will likely be converted to safety. On the plus side, TE
Shawn Nelson's combination of receiving and willing blocking was a
tremendous value in round 4.

Carolina Panthers
- Traded a 2010 1st rounder for the second consecutive year but did
manage to acquire undersized pass rusher Everette Brown with the pick.
Developmental CB/S Sherrod Martin was not nearly as good a value later
in the round. Corvey Irvin is a rotational DT at best. Added nice
value with the late round picks FB Tony Fiametta, G Duke Robinson and
CB Captain Munnerlyn. If you add 2008 1st rounder T Jeff Otah to the
mix the grade would be as much as a letter better.

Denver Broncos
- The pick of Knowshon Moreno was a smart move considering his
playmaking ability and the team's shaky quarterback situation. DE
Robert Ayers was a solid front seven selection for the defense.
Unfortunately, he was the only front seven selection. Added much
needed depth to the secondary with CB Alphonso Smith, S Darcel McBath
and S David Bruton. Made two questionable trades however, giving up a
2010 1st rounder for the undersized Smith (with MLB Rey Maualuga on the
board no less) and trading up to make Richard Quinn the 2nd tight end
drafted (a truly baffling selection).

Pittsburgh Steelers
- DT Evander Hood was an odd scheme fit in round one as he is more of a
penetrating DT than a blocker occupying 3-4 DE. G Kraig Urbik is a
tough Steelers type lineman. WR Mike Wallace was a 3rd round surprise
whom they hope can be a deep threat and returner. CBs Keenan Lewis and
Joe Burnett were solid values who will compete for time. Don't be
surprised if C AQ Shipley or RB/FB Frank Summers find a way to
contribute. There's potential but aside from Urbik there is not much
certain help.

Grade: D+

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- Hopefully got their franchise QB in Josh Freeman but despite his
talent he is a risky pick and they need to fight the urge to play him
right away. Attempted to add talent at DT and DE with Roy Miller and
Kyle Moore but both are projects. WR Sammie Stroughter could be a
nice 7th round find as a slot receiver and kick returner.

Grade: D

Dallas Cowboys
- The Cowboys accumulated picks like crazy but did very little with
them. They are bound to hit on a few guys due to the quantity but the
overall talent of their selections is not overwhelming. Their best
picks were likely LB Jason Williams, OLB Victor Butler and S Michael
Hamlin. DE/OLB Michael Bennett is an nice pass rushing talent but he
is not a good 3-4 OLB candidate. They would have been better off using
their multitude of picks and trading up in round 2 rather than trading
out of the first day altogether. When you add in the trade of their 1st
and 3rd round picks for WR Roy Williams when Anquan Boldin and Braylon
Edwards could not even command a 1st round pick the draft looks even
worse.

Grade: D-

Oakland Raiders
- Al Davis had a need for speed and as a result the Raiders draft
turned into a "Danger Zone". Darrius Heyward-Bey was the best
combination of size and speed at the wide receiver position in the
draft and despite inconsistent hands and a lack of production Al Davis
needed to have him at 7th overall. If it was not for the fact of
Heyward-Bey having tremendous upside to go with his risk the Raiders
grade would have been an F. S Michael Mitchell created a collective
"huh?" from draftniks across the globe in round two. He may also have
started the wild run of must have sleeper picks across the league in
round 3. He gave new meaning to last year's William Hayes pick. Round
3 also included a reach for DE Matt Shaughnessy (who is surprisingly
not fast). WR Louis Murphy and DE Stryker Sulak were solid day two
values. Ironically Sulak was the fastest DE on the board when he was
selected in round 6.

Chris Maier is senior editor for NFLDraft101.com. He can be reached at cmaier@nfldraft101.com.

Cincinnati Bengals: 2009 NFL Draft Recap

One has to go back to 2003 (Carson Palmer, Eric Steinbach, Kelley Washington) or 1998 (Takeo Spikes, Brian Simmons) to find an NFL Draft which has generated the day after buzz on the Bengals 2009 draft and even then I do not think it compares (Remember we are talking about day after excitement). In an off-season of negativity and free agent departures the Bengals went through the draft with the patience to let the draft come to them and selected top talents while also filling their top needs.

One can make the argument that no team drafted more sheer talent in 2009 draft. That said, it is not a draft class without substantial risk. After all, there is a reason why Andre Smith fell to #6 (immaturity/weight), Rey Maualuga fell to round 2 (maturity/freelancing), Michael Johnson a top 10 talent in round 3 (inconsistent effort) and Chase Coffman to late in round 3 (slow, poor blocker, injury). I don't say this to be negative but it is important to say this collection of talent is very much a high risk/high reward draft.

Pick by Pick breakdown:

1. OT Andre Smith, Alabama - Arguably the most talented offensive lineman in the draft. Dominating run blocker who may or may not be athletic enough to play left tackle. At a minimum he is the team's starting right tackle and should provide an immediate boost to a stagnant ground attack. Biggest concern is whether offensive line coach Paul Alexander can get the most out of him.

2. MLB Rey Maualuga, USC - A big hitting intimidator, Maualuga is the type of player Marvin Lewis has always wanted in the middle of his defense. Needs to stay out of trouble and stick to the scheme. Tremendous talent whom the team was thrilled to see fall to them in round 2.

3a. DE Michael Johnson, Georgia Tech - Arguably most physically gifted defensive end in the draft, Johnson falls due to inconsistent effort and questionable desire. Fills a major need but he will be a project for Mike Zimmer and D-Line coach Jay Hayes. Even if Johnson is only able to be a situational pass rusher he could make a big difference for the defense. His potential is well worth the risk of a 3rd round pick.

3b.TE Chase Coffman, Missouri - Excellent route runner with the best hands of any tight end in the draft. Has the talent to be what everyone expected out of Ben Utecht last year. Despite the positives he is far from a sure thing as he is slow and a poor blocker which is generally not a good combination for a tight end.

4. C Jonathan Luigs, Arkansas - He is not the physical mauler that Max Unger or Eric Wood are and the concerns with how he will deal with the nose tackles of the AFC North are legitimate but he is also the fifth and final member of a highly touted center class and is known for his athleticism and high football IQ. A great value in round 4 who will challenge for the starting job.

5. P Kevin Huber, Cincinnati - Best punter in the draft. As a left footer his kicks have a unique spin which has caused problems for returners. Also, is known for his ability to change fields and pin the ball deep.

6a. CB Morgan Trent, Michigan - Has good size/speed combination and good coverage instincts. Has the tools you look for in a developmental type. Should battle for the dime job.

6b. RB Bernard Scott, Abilene-Christian - Like Jason Shirley last year, he is the team's gratuitous character risk who will garner far to much discussion from the media. Despite his troubled past, he the burst the team lacks in the backfield and was tremendously productive at Abilene. Has a lot of potential but needs to keep his nose clean.

7a. FB Fui Vakapuna, BYU - The team was known to be interested in Vakapuna after his excellent pro day workout. Vakapuna is big strong runner who is making the transition to fullback. Shows good power, receiving skills and a willingness to block.

7b. DT Clinton McDonald, Memphis - A nice sleeper pick. McDonald is an athletic, undersized defensive tackle with a knack for penetration. Had 7 sacks as senior. Good character guy.

7c. WR Freddie Brown, Utah - One of the stars of the Utes upset over Alabama with 12 catches and 125 yards. Has good size and is a possession receiver who is willing to make the tough catches over the middle. Will face an uphill battle making the roster.

Overall Grade: A- (but with a High Risk/High Reward asterisk)

2009 NFL Draft: Day One Winners, Losers and More

Day One of the 2009 NFL Draft is in the books and while it has been one
of the more predictable drafts in recent years and has included just
one dynamic trade (Mark Sanchez) but it has definitely had its moments
including winners and losers:

Winners: (There are a lot to choose from in this category as a lot of teams did well)

Philadelphia Eagles
- After filling their need for an offensive tackle by trading for Jason
Peters, the Eagles filled their need for offensive playmakers with WR
Jeremy Maclin and RB LeSean McCoy. McCoy in particular was an
excellent selection and heir apparent to Brian Westbrook in the
backfield.

New York Jets
- The Jets entered the draft needing a quarterback more than anything
else and were able to get their guy in Mark Sanchez without
overpaying. Giving up a 1st, 2nd and three veterans who were no longer
in their plans is a small price to play to get your franchise
quarterback. Getting Sanchez without giving up a 2010 pick was esp.
impressive.

Cincinnati Bengals
- As usual the Bengals stood pat with their picks but filled their
offensive tackle need with Andre Smith and received one of the biggest
draft day steals in MLB Rey Maualuga. It had to be tough for the
Bengals to pass on highly rated C Max Unger but taking Maualuga was the
right move and gives Marvin Lewis the MLB he has always wanted.

Miami Dolphins
- The Dolphins did not get the wide receiver everyone expected them to
take but managed to get two physical corners in the Parcells mold while
also adding the ultimate Wildcat weapon in QB Pat White.

Cleveland Browns
- They were able to accomplish what Kansas City's Scott Pioli was not
and traded out of the top five adding an additional 2nd rounder in the
process. The pick of C Alex Mack brought back memories of Mangini's
Nick Mangold pick from 2006 and while also adding one of the drafts top
possession receivers in Brian Robiskie. You can debate the Mohammed
Massaquoi and David Veikune picks a little bit but the hidden gems of
their day were the collection of role players they received from the
Jets including S Abram Elam (fills a need) and Brett Ratliff (a
darkhorse candidate for their quarterback derby).

Other teams that did well include the Colts, Packers, Baltimore, Jacksonville and Minnesota.

Losers:

Denver Broncos
- They did well with first rounders Knowshon Moreno and Robert Ayers
but baffled with their trades in round two including giving up a 2010
first round pick for Alphonso Smith and trading up to get mildly
regarded blocking tight end Richard Quinn. When you have the bounty of
pick the Broncos had there is no reason to give up a first round pick
the following year.

Oakland Raiders
- They reached for speedy WR Darrius Heyward-Bey at 7th overall (not a
big surprise). Not satisfied that they had reached far enough they
made the day one version of last year's William Hayes pick by selecting
lightly regarded workout warrior Michael Mitchell.a safety out of Ohio
University. The networks did not have film on a day one selection
which has to be a first. Kudos to Sonny Jacobs for actually writing an article on Bleacher Report on April 24th requesting them to draft Mitchell. Of course, I doubt Jacobs meant for them to do it on day one.

Buffalo Bills
- I liked the team's focus on the offensive line with C Eric Wood and G
Andy Levitre but I am not sold on Aaron Maybin at defensive end (esp.
at 11th overall money) and CB Jairus Byrd was a bit of a reach (and not
a great scheme fit).

Anquan Boldin and Chad Johnson -
Both veteran wide receivers wanted to relocate to get new contracts but
after watching the teams with wide receiver needs select receivers in
round 1 they are both resigned to playing under their current deals
once again.

Awards:

Biggest Reach: Michael Mitchell by Oakland

Surprised to See Fall to Round 2: Rey Maualuga

Trader Jack Award:
Cleveland - Entered the draft with just 5 picks and managed to get
three more while also adding three solid veterans in the process. The
multiple trade downs for two extra 6 rounders was a nice display of
managing the draft.

Nothing to Show for Day One Award:
Dallas and Chicago both elected to trade out of day one altogether.

Bengals Draft Preview: Wide Receivers and Tight Ends

For the second year in a row the Chad Ocho Cinco cloud hangs over the Bengals heading into the NFL Draft (albeit much quieter this year) which makes it difficult to evaluate how big of a need wide receiver is. Or does it. With Chad, they have Coles as the #2, Chris Henry as the #3, Andre Caldwell at #4 and Jerome Simpson as the #5 receiver. A pretty good group although for the second straight year 2008 draftees Caldwell and Simpson will have a hard time making much of an impact.

Now subtract Chad and the group still is pretty solid as Caldwell and Simpson slide into the 3 and 4 roles which is a reasonable expectation unless the team consideres Jerome Simpson to be a complete bust. It is also worth noting the team's aggressive pursuit of Coles was a hedge against Chad being Ocho Stinko again.

We can debate whether or not the team should trade the Ocho but in either case wide receiver lags behind other positions on the need list. If they draft a wide receiver expect the player to possess return skills.

Moving to tight ends, the presence of Reggie Kelly and Ben Utecht makes one think the team is set at tight end but is it. Kelly is in the final year of his contract and Utecht struggled to catch the ball on the rare occassion he was healthy. The team also has Daniel Coats and 2008 6th round Matt Sperry but neither inspires much confidence. Based on the above, I would rank tight end as a much bigger need than wide receiver with the team considering receiving tight ends such as Jared Cook, Cornelius Ingram or James Casey as early as round 3 (they could also take one with their annual 2nd round luxury pick). Overall tight end is not a top need but as long as they don't take one in round 2, it should be considered good planning rather than a bad pick (any of the above guys mentioned would be a good 3rd round value).

Wide Receiver:

Round 1 Possibilities: Michael Crabtree, Jeremy Maclin

Round 2 Luxury Picks: Hakeem Nicks, Kenny Britt, Brian Robiskie, Percy Harvin

Mid-Round Targets (rounds 3 or 4): Derrick Williams, Brandon Tate, Mike Wallace

Late Round Sleepers (round 5 - 7): Johnny Knox, Mike Thomas, Sammie Stroughter

Tight End:

Round 2 or 3 possibilities: Jared Cook, Cornelius Ingram, James Casey

Later Round Targets/Sleepers: Cameron Morrah, Anthony Hill, Davon Drew, Richard Quinn

Be sure to join me at NFLDraft101.com this weekend for Live Coverage of the 2009 NFL Draft including Live Chat and Pick by Pick Analysis

Bengal Blitz Four Round Mock Draft

Wednesday night I plugged away through a four round mock draft. Before I could post the mock, with the requisite article and Bengal selection breakdowns, a trade occured (Tony Gonzalez to Atlanta) as tends to happen this time of year. My apologies for not correcting it but the ripples of the trade are many through a four round mock and another trade will happen before the draft which will change it again. In the end take the mocks for what they are a projection. No one is going to get all the picks correct, but you get to see the thought processes team's go through and who might be available when you team picks. Without further ado here are the Bengals picks followed by the mock:

Round 1: OT Eugene Monroe, Virginia - The Chiefs passing on Curry causes Seattle to take Curry which allows one of the top 2 tackles to land in Cincinnati and avoiding the risk of taking Andre Smith. That said, I think there is a 40% chance the Bengals take Andre Smith over Monroe anyway.

Round 2: C Eric Wood, Louisville - Taking a center is a need pick, with Mack off the board the selection comes down to Unger or Wood. They are graded about the same but Wood's ability to pull and trap gives him the edge. Don't be surprised if the Bengals take a running back (McCoy?) or defensive end (Michael Johnson? Paul Kruger?) here.

Round 3a. TE Jared Cook, South Carolina - Tight End would be a surprise but Cook has the measureables the Bengals tend to like. A bit of a luxury pick but Reggie Kelly is in the final year of his deal and Utecht vastly underperformed. Cook has tremendous upside. Shonn Green and middle linebackers Jason Phillips and Jasper Brinkley also were considered.

Round 3b. MLB Jasper Brinkley, South Carolina - Brinkley is an excellent athlete who has a lot of upside if his knee is 100%. He could compete for time immediately on the strong side and develop behind Dhani Jones in the middle.

Round 4: DE Brandon Williams, Texas Tech - All Williams does is get sacks as 13 of his 25 tackles were quarterbacks last year. He is a bit of a project but is a good athlete who would be a nice addition as a situational pass rusher.

Round 1

Bengals Draft Preview: Offensive Line

Coming off a season in which the Bengals allowed 51 sacks (3rd most in the league) and average just 3.6 yards per carry (30th in the league) it is easy to conclude the Bengals offensive line is its biggest off-season need. Adding to the troubles is the team's persistent failure to develop its offensive line talent as Bengals linemen have a strange tendency to regress after strong 1st (and sometimes 2nd) seasons.

Center is the most glaring need on the offensive line as the team's centers have a combined 12 games of NFL action (0 starts) and Crummey is actually a player and not just a nickname to describe former center Eric Ghiaciuc. Speculation is the team will select a center in round 2 or 3 at the latest in a deep center class.

The team has mentioned the possibility of entering the season with Andrew Whitworth and Anthony Collins at the tackle position and while it is possible it is definately not preferably which is why the Bengals selecting a tackle in round 1 is listed in nearly every mock draft. Should the team decide to move Whitworth to tackle it would create an equally large hole at left guard (not to mention a left tackle extremely vulnerable to speed rushers).

Any way you look at it the Bengals need to get two starting offensive linemen in the draft with one of them being a center. As a result expect two lineman selected in the first three rounds with the possibility for a third lineman late on day two. By the way don't be surprised if the Bengals take Andre Smith even if Eugene Monroe is on the board as the team is rumored to really like Andre.

Centers:
2nd round targets: Alex Mack, Max Unger, Eric Wood
Mid-round target (3rd-4th round): Antoine Caldwell and Jonathan Luigs
Later round sleepers(5th-7th round): Edwin Williams, AQ Shipley

Guards:
Mid-round targets (3rd-4th round):Kraig Urbik, Andy Levitre, Trevor Canfield
Late Round Sleepers (5th-7th round): Jamie Thomas, Andy Kemp, Roger Allen

Tackles:
1st round targets: Jason Smith, Eugene Monroe, Andre Smith, Michael Oher
2nd round targets: William Beatty, Jamon Meredith, Phil Loadholt
Mid-round targets (3rd-4th round): Fenuki Tepuo, Gerald Cadogan, TJ Lang, Sebastian Vollmer
Late Round Sleepers (5th-7th round): Cornelius Lewis, Garrett Reynolds, Alex Boone

The re-signing of Cedric Benson took the running back position from a top need to second tier need in the upcoming NFL Draft. Benson showed a spark after joining the team at mid-season. He has a nice blend of power and burst which makes you feel like he could be an every down back. Speptics point out to 3.5 yards per carry and how the bulk of his yardage came against sub-par defenses while gaining just 52 yards on 26 carries vs. Pittsburgh and Baltimore.

With the depth chart showing the names of Kenny Watson (a solid 3rd down back), Chris Perry (1st round bust), DeDe Dorsey (can't stay healthy), James Johnson (who?) and recently acquired Gary Russell (goal line back/returner?). With the above list hardly instilling confidence the Bengals will be looking to add a 2nd option to its ground attack in the draft. How early they select a back will speak volumes about confident they are in Benson. With some rumors having the Bengals showing heavy interest in Beanie Wells and Knowshon Moreno, you have to believe the team is either looking to reach for a running back at #6 or consider trading down in round one. Don't forget the team has a long tradition of drafting 2nd round running backs including Eric Ball, Harold Green, Corey Dillon and Kenny Irons.

In addition, to running back the team will also be looking to draft a fullback as they do not have a quality fullback option on the roster. Do not expect the fullback to be selected earlier than round 5.

Running Back:

Bengals Draft Preview: Quarterbacks

Carson Palmer is expected back after missing most of 2008 with an elbow injury. The team proved last year it was not built to handle an injury to its franchise quarterback (most team's aren't) and 2009 will be no different. The Bengals elected to go for a cheap backup quarterback with some experience settling on former Lions and 49ers JT O'Sullivan. The third stringer is Jordan Palmer. Considering the backup options are mediocre the team could invest a pick in a developmental quarterback mid/late on day two. Unfortunately, it is not a good quarterback class this year.

Bengals Draft Preview: Defensive Line

Despite not trading up to get DT Sedrick Ellis in the 2008 NFL Draft, the Bengals still managed to upgrade the position (and add LB Keith Rivers) with 3rd rounder Pat Sims. Sims is the run stuffer the team has lacked for years and combined with Domata Peko, has provided the Bengals with their best defensive tackle combination since Tim Krumrie was playing (of course you could argue that isn't saying much). The team has also added Tank Johnson to the mix as a pass rusher and their is still hope 5th rounder Jason Shirley can contribute. While none of the previously mentioned players is pro bowl worthy, considering the depth at the position it would be a surprise if the team selects a defensive tackle earlier than the 5th round. BJ Raji would be a surprise 1st round pick but is worth the 6th overall slot.

Despite investing heavily in up and coming pass rushers Robert Geathers and Antwan Odom, the Bengals pass rush remains one of the worst in the NFL. Depth behind Geather and Odom is extremely questionable as former 3rd rounder Frostee "No relation to the Snowman" Rucker has been a bust, Eric Henderson can't stay healthy and Jonathan Fanene is a try hard run stuffer whose greatest asset is his ability to play inside and out. As a result, of the team''s questionable defensive end talent an early DE selection is very possible on draft day. Multiple DE picks is very possible.

DT:

Late Round Sleepers (Rounds 5-7): Corvey Irvin, Clinton McDonald, Demonte Bolden, George Hypolite

DE:

Round 1 (6th overall): Brian Orakpo, Everette Brown

Round 2: Larry English, Michael Johnson, Paul Kruger, Connor Barwin

Mid-Targets (Rounds 3-4): Brandon Williams, David Veikune, Lawrence Sidbury

Late Round Sleepers (Rounds 5-7): Stryker Sulak, Will Davis, Matt Shaughnessy, Maurice Evans, Nick Reed

Defensive Tackle Rankings

Defensive End Rankings

Bengals 7 Round Mock Draft

The staff of NFLDraft101.com conducted their 2nd annual 7 round mock draft this weekend and the results for the Bengals were encouraging although the 6th position in round one proved to be as difficult decision as tackles Jason Smith and Eugene Monroe were both off the board. After debating Michael Crabtree, Jeremy Maclin, Everette Brown, Michael Oher and Andre Smith, the staff settled on the year's biggest boom-bust candidate in OT Andre Smith based on need and position scarcity.

Back in December selecting Andre the Giant would be hailed as a tremendous selection. After blowing off the combine and a so-so workout, Andre's dominance in the SEC has been forgotten behind a myriad of work ethic, desire and character questions. My take is he will likely fair well as a right tackle but could struggle on the left side which is pretty much the same thing they are saying about Oher. Fortunately for Cincinnati, Anthony Collins has the ability to be a solid (but not Pro Bowl) left tackle. Nonetheless a selection of Andre Smith will be received with mixed reaction. Here is the complete Bengals 7 round draft:

1. OT Andre Smith, Alabama - A need pick, has the talent but does he have the desire? A road grading run blocker whose future is brightest at right tackle.

2. C Alex Mack, California - Rated by several experts as the top center in the draft, the Bengals fill their biggest need with a smart technician who should be a major upgrade from Eric Ghiaciuc. DE Michael Johnson got a cursory mention but passing on Mack was never seriously considered.

3a. MLB Jasper Brinkley, South Carolina - Tremendous athletic talent with size and speed. Brinkley is a good run stuffer who the team can groom in the middle or on the strong side. The biggest question about Brinkley is not his ability but the condition of his knee. RBs Andre Brown and Javon Ringer were discussed.

3b. DE David Veikune, Hawaii - A high motor defensive end who can help improve the team's mediocre pass rush. RB Rashad Jennings was a consideration.

4. RB Kory Sheets, Purdue - Sheets had a strong week at the Senior Bowl playing with the Bengal coaches and provides a complementary style to Cedric Benson. Good receiver with the ability to take one the distance. No other positions were seriously discussed.

5. TE Kory Sperry, Colorado State - A sleeper tight end with good size, speed and receiving skills. The other top consideration was Chase Coffman whose injuries and lack of foot speed caused him to be overlooked in favor of the more athletic Sperry.

6a. CB Bruce Johnson, Miami (FL) - A undersized corner with good man cover skills.

6b. FB Fui Vakapuna, BYU - Fills a need for a fullback.

7a. DE/OLB Nick Reed, Oregon - Another high motor guy who would get a look as a situational pass rusher and strong-side linebacker.

7b. P Thomas Morstead, SMU - Officially would put the disappointing Kyle Larson on notice.

7c. WR Jamarko Simmons, Western Michigan - A big, physical receiver who is worth taking a late round flyer on.

Be sure to visit NFLDraft101.com for live coverage of the 2009 NFL Draft April 25-26.

Bengals Draft Preview: Linebackers

An unheralded unit played surprisingly well in 2008 but the team needs to
improve its linebacker talent and athleticism. 2008 1st rounder Keith Rivers is a building block but the team does not have any other top talent at the position. The decision to move Dhani Jones in the middle provided stability but he is not getting any younger or faster. On the strongside Rashad Jeanty is a stopgap who is an ok run stuffer who has never delivered on his pass rushing promise.

The backup situation leaves a lot to be desired aside from last year's free agent surprise Brandon Johnson. Darryl Blackstock is miscast in a 4-3, and backup MLB Abdul Hodge is unproven.

Based on the above, the Bengals could consider a linebacker as early as round 2 (but more likely round 3) and multiple picks are a possibility. It is worth mentioning the Bengals have drafted 6 linebackers in the first three rounds of the draft during the Marvin Lewis era (6 drafts) and only Keith Rivers remains with the team.

Early Targets (Rounds 1-2): ILB -Rey Maualuga, James Laurinaitis, Darry Beckwith

Mid-Targets (Rounds 3-4): ILB - Jasper Brinkley, Jason Phillips OLB - Marcus Freeman Tyrone McKenzie

Late Round Sleepers (Rounds 5-7): ILB: Worrell Williams, Frantz Joseph OLB - DeAndre Levy, Jason Williams, Ashlee Palmer

ILB Rankings

OLB Rankings
