Introducing...

Introducing....

Hopefully at some point in the near future, the imaginary drum roll I hear in my head can conclude with "The Newest Member of the Yankees, C.C. Sabathia".

For now, however, you guys will just have to settle for me.  My name is Brian Lestz, and I'm the newest writer here at the Bronx Block.  Those of you who frequently comment on this blog or Pending Pinstripes might know me better as BoatMyster.  Now I know what you're all thinking - 'But Brian, how can we ever take you seriously now that you've shed the luster and mystique that was BoatMyster?'  This is an excellent question, thanks for asking.

I'm currently almost about to be a semi-senior at St. John's University.  I'm a Yankees and Knicks die-hard.  I never used to follow football much, but now I have a girlfriend who says that the Super Bowl is more important than my birthday and our anniversary...combined.  She says I'm a Jets fan, which works well for me, since I hate anything Bawstin automatically.

I started writing on my own sports blog two years ago to kill time.  I later became a Men's Baseball Announcer at St. John's.  This Guy is the best college player I saw play.  I later joined the St. John's Bowling Team, which ranked as high as #4 in the country. This Guy is the best college bowler I saw play.

Somehow ESPN took me seriously enough to hire me as an intern at 1050ESPN Radio, and since August I've been trying not to completely destroy the integrity of the station.  One plus is that I get to be on a lot of conference calls, such as the one Cashman had after completing the Swisher trade, or the one Mike Mussina had today confirming his retirement.

For those of you that didn't hear it, Mussina dropped the bombshell that he has known about his retirement since last January.  I'll see if I can upload some very interesting sound bytes from that conference call for you guys to listen to.

Tom and I are looking forward to an exciting off-season, and an even more exciting season.  Stay tuned to the Bronx Block throughout the coming weeks for 2008 commentary, the latest Free Agent news, as well as our 2009 projections.

Now that you guys know a little more about me, I'll leave you with this:

Favorite Sports Memory - 7th inning, Game 1 of 1998 World Series.  I was at the game with my dad and saw the Yankees score 7 runs in the inning, featuring a game-tying 3-run homer by Knoblauch, and a go-ahead Grand Slam by Tino Martinez on a 3-2 pitch with 2 outs.

Worst Sports Memory - Tie for 1st (2004 ALCS Game 4, 2004 ALCS Game 5, 2004 ALCS Game 7).  My college roommate was from Boston.  He had 11 friends in our small dorm room celebrating after Game 7, and rubbing it in my face as obnoxiously as humanly possible.  Their raucous behavior prompted Public Safety to issue us (myself included) a summons.  Our friendly wager on the series caused me to have to parade around campus with a Johnny Damon jersey, Sawks hat, and signs hanging in front and behind me...less than 24 hours after the collapse became final.

What are your favorite and worst sports memories??? If your worst can top that, I would gladly shake your hand.

Welcome aboard my man.
Favorite sports memory: Aaron Boone homerun.
Worst sports memory: Same as you.
How do you feel about the Z-Bo and Jamal Crawford trades, respectively?
By the way, I'm a freshman at St. John's dude! Do you go to the SI campus or Queens?

Yo Ashish, I'm at the Queens campus.

About the Knicks' trades, let's just say I could have written quite a bit on that this afternoon. As a whole, I understand what they're doing, and hopefully in 2 years I'll look back on this day and remember it as the day it all began.

That being said, I haven't been confident in a Knicks team in 8 years, and haven't enjoyed watching them play in 6 or 7 years. I really enjoyed the first 11 games of the season, and was looking forward to seeing how far they could go. That's why, today anyway, I wasn't too thrilled with the trades. I feel like we've endured years and years of the Knicks mocking their fans, and we were repaid for our devotion with.......11 exciting games. Mike D'Antoni had this team playing inspired ball, like they completely forgot how pathetically they've competed in recent years. And how is he repaid for his stellar work? By taking away his top two scorers, top rebounder, and only player with enough size and length to sort of play Center.

I thought that Al Harrington could be a nice fit in the system, although it left a hole in our 2. The Randolph trade just completely caught me off guard, and leaves the Knicks extremely vulnerable in the post. Supposedly Jared Jeffries will be our starting Center when he gets healthy, but that guy possesses the skill set of Malik Rose. I truly wonder if anyone in the Knicks' front office, past or present, has ever seen this guy play.

I still have hope, but it's a loooooooong way till November, 2010. What if the Cavs win a title in the next two season? Or how about if they go to the Finals one year, and Eastern Conf Finals another year? Would LeBron really leave that team for a less proven one, albeit on a bigger stage? Wait, this is a Yankee blog...what?

I was initially feeling the same way when I heard about the trades in my car on the radio but then when I thought about it, at the end of the day, the Knicks are a fringe playoff team with possibly no chance of making it passed the first round, even if they get in. I remember a few years back when they made the playoffs with Marbury and Co. and even then I had no faith in the team because I knew they weren't going to beat the Nets. So, it would definitely be more exciting, but at then what? A little more of the same for the next 3,4,5 years? Yeah, that would be just about it considering the fact that they wouldn't be able to go significantly under the salary cap, and as a result, not be able to sign a legit free agent or two. There's a difference between having a winning season and winning it all. I would rather my team be able to contend for a title than be above average but not elite enough. So, I'm willing to wait.

And I go to the Queens Campus as well.
