Patriots finding cap space

According to various sources the Patriots have between $7.1 million to potentially $10.3 million (it is admitted info is missing) in cap space for 2007.
In a recent article by Jason Cole of Yahoo Sports, Cole estimates the Patriots have around $8.4 million in cap space.
This is before signing most of the rookies, which has an†average rookie cap of $4.27 million for 2007, as well as, coming to terms with Asante Samuel and the total $7.79 million hit.
Cole adds, “The Patriots could actually increase to more than $10 million free if they agree to a long-term deal with Samuel”
While this may be true, the Patriots only have until July 15th to negotiate with Samuel to a long term deal, then the ‘opportunity’ to be $10+ million over the cap.
So it†may be a reality for 2007, but what about cap space in 2008 and beyond?

Poll: Pats should trade Samuel

Today is the last day of our poll on WHAT SHOULD THE PATRIOTS DO WITH ASANTE SAMUEL??
Trade him to get more pick? 16 votes (43%)
Sign him to a long term deal?†12 votes (32%)
Let him sit out in 2007? 5 votes (14%)
Franchise him again in 2008?†4 votes (11%)
This is not a scientific study (haha)
All things being equal, the Patriots are better with Samuel then without him and as time has passed momentum has gained in favor of signing Samuel.
From our Poll†a few of our readers responded:
Dana Russo : ‘sign Asante to a long term deal, and get on with things.’† and Mike Maddaloni: ‘And I too agree – sign Samuel!’
I think it is funny (literally and figuratively) that Samuel earned about $2 million during his rookie contract and remained fairly healthy and dominated in 2006, whereas,†the oft injured Randall Gay has a $1.3 million one-year deal for 2007.†
You could say Gay’s deal is this high due to Samuel’s potential holdout, but at least we know the Jets were not willing to give up a second-round choice for Gay.
On the Boston.com Pats message boards, some fans believe the Patriots should be tougher on Samuel and others point out that it is not only 2007 season they are concerned about, but what about Ty Warren†and Vince Wilfork contracts coming up soon?† Bill & Co. think of the future not only 2007. Samuel needs to remember this.
Bill Burt, from the Daily News of Newburyport, has advice†for Asante on his opportunities. A good read and although it looks lengthy with 4 pages the last two are mainly info on the franchising and contract aspects.
To be fair Samuel has out played his rookie contract and deserves to ‘Get Paid’, but not enough to break the Patriots’ system and hinder future greatness for the team (and himself if with the team).
I believe he should play a full season proving he is a consistent†pro-bowl type player.† Pro-Bowler Nathan Vasher re-signed (in a non-contract year) to remain with the Bears.
A few (Windy City GridIron and the Boston.com) view this as sign Samuel may have to change tactics, as Vasher’s deal impacts the cornerback market.
Obviously, Samuel and his agent will need to do some thinking before the July 15th contract deadline. Bill & Scott Pioli may be considering their next steps as well.

Ellis Hobbs: cornerstone of the Patriots

With all the questions surrounding cornerback Asante Samuel and his contract negotiations there are a†FEW players†the Patriots will rely on to solidify the secondary.
Third year cornerback Ellis Hobbs, selected 83rd overall in 2005,†is known as much for his potential as he is for his attitude.† Being a†five foot nine inch and 190-pounds may be considered tiny, but Hobbs can bring it to the best of them.†
Cornerback Ellis Hobbs is recovering from offseason surgery to repair the scaphoid bone in his left wrist while playing in New England’s Week Three loss to Denver.
Hobbs was limited in playing after breaking the bone†and never fully recovered during the season, but still managed to record 46 tackles and 2 interceptions while only†starting in†9†games.† Hobbs also had 10 kick-off returns averaging 36.0-yards and scoring one touchdown on a 93-yard return.
By†the time the playoffs began, Hobbs did a great job learning†to playing through†the pain and worked his way back in the starting line-up.† He had 14 solo tackles, six passes defensed and returned six kick-offs for 220-yards.†Hobbs also held Colts receiver Reggie Wayne (6ft, 200 lbs)†to 5 catches and 68-yards.† Not too bad for a short guy†with a cast on his arm.
During the offseason Hobbs again had surgery on his wrist to make sure the healing process would be complete and he would be 100% for the 2007 season.
Although he was hindered by his injury in 2006, Hobbs†believes the 2007 will be a big year for the team and expects his performance will improve compared to his first two years.
Hobbs particpated in offseason training and the recent mini-camp, but did not seem to be full strength during the mini-camp sessions.
Should Samuel and the Patriots not agree to terms, the starting line-up†for the secondary looks so far to be Hobbs and†Chad Scott at cornerback and the 2006 IR duo of Rodney Harrison and Eugene Wilson at safety.
In the†meantime, it looks as if the backups at cornerback may be one of a number of possible candidates: Randall Gay, Tory James, Eddie Jackson, Antwain Spann, Willie Andrews and rookie Mike Richardson all currently being signed with the team.
To be sure Samuel will be missed in 2007, especially†if Harrison, Wilson as well as Meriweather are not healthy.
Hobbs expressed his thoughts on Samuels hold out earlier this month:

Laurence 'Kool-Aid' Maroney to break out in 2007

As the New England Patriots†take†a†before†training camp begins July 29th, it allows me to take some time to research different players and find a few interesting articles.
There has been some concern within Patriots Nation about running back Laurence Maroney and how his injury may impact the 2007 season.† Is he on the mend, good to go†or due†to injury†be replaced?
For 2007 expectations are†high for†a healthy Maroney.† Given the fact the Patriots no longer have Corey Dillon and now†have a speedy, stretch the field type of receivers in Randy Moss, Donte’ Stallworth and Wes Welker, this means it will be harder for defenses to stack the line and†allow Maroney more room to†bust through the line,†catch the ball coming out of the backfield and score touchdowns! OOOHHH YYYEEAAAAH!!!
While some some fantasy reviews have Maroney atop the AFC East, other mean stream media (can this be true for fantasy football?) have Maroney in the top 10 or question his abilities to shine through in his sophomore year.
MVN’s own Mike Whooley’s†Fantasy Footballexpectations for Maroney seems like a high possibility with:

Patriot's Ty Warren seeks new agent

According to the Boston Globe’s Football Notes section, New England Patriots defensive lineman Ty Warren is searching for a new agent.
The 6 foot 5 inch, 300 pound,†Warren was a first round draft pick for New England in 2003.† The 13th overall pick is still playing under his rookie contract and expected salary of $875,000 and $1.5 million for 2007 and 2008 respectively.
Expectations†are†under the current contract Warren could theoretically earn and additional $3.7 and $5.6 million through individual and team performance in 2007 and 2008.
Warren†did well in the 2006 seasonwith a career-high 117 tackles (66 solo) finishing second overall for the Patriots.† Warren also tied for second on the team with 7.5 sacks.
2006 was a great year for Warren and he should have gone to the Pro-Bowl.† Warren outplayed his teammate and Pro-Bowler Richard Seymour.
Although Warren†has two-years left on his contract, obviously he has learned a thing or two over the past few years watching Seymour, Deion Branch and now Asante Samuel negotiate with the Patriots.
Warren is a Pro-Bowl caliber guy and with little competition nipping at his heels camp and on the roster for 2007, it would be fair to say the Patriots would be smart coming to terms sooner rather then later†if Bill & Co. are looking to keep him.
Is it me or are the New England Patriots now paying for their successes of winning 3 of the last 6 Super Bowls?
Well with Ty still on the books through 2008, we should still be able to win two more.

Pats eying Georgia CB Paul Oliver?

As mentioned in our June 5th article on Asante Samuel, the Patriots will have an opportunity in the 2007 Supplemental Draft to find a valuable replacement at cornerback by selecting Georgia’s Paul Oliver.
The Supplemental Draft is held after the normal NFL Draft and must take place before formal training camp begins.† I believe the Sup Draft will be July 12th?

Trade speculation fuels debate on Asante Samuel

While traveling across the US this week, I have had little time to read much on sports and the Patriots.
Today is a day to catch up on such activities and see what is news.
Over at MVN’s the Viking War Cry, Anthony has some info on the speculation (via twoncities.com) of a possible trade between the Vikings and the Patriots to exchange cornerbacks Antoine Winfield and Asante Samuel.
It appears these rumors are also fueled by fannation.com at this link:
http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/6304
sorry boys and girls – that is the fancy link technology of old computers here in the midwest…. and dial up at that.
At any rate, it appears this speculations comes with mixed views from New England fans and those that make it their pledge to hate the Patriots.
The positive side of a trade between the Vikes and Pats seems to be the opportunity of both clubs getting rid of a vocal malcontent (although Winfield is showing up at Vikes practices). Without giving up a big risk of having to find a decent replacement for their CB.
The Vikes would have to pony up a couple of draft picks as well, but hey Samuel is out of the AFC…. and Winfield is hard hitting a sure tackler and cheaper at $6 mil a year.
Negatives on the transaction is getting value for Samuel in the number of picks and which round. Plus the added headache of a NEW disgruntled player coming to the Pats and losing the Patriot Way as AD Thomas, Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Donte’ Stallworth, Kelley Washington, Sammy Morris, Tory James and a few others join the team for the first time this year.
A few fans would prefer to keep Samuel as he already knows the system and what Bill & Co. want to achieve, is a bit younger and has proven himself in 2006.
Well at least there has been a bit of exciting news and Asante is again the topic. Until the first game is played, Asante will continue to be a hot topic, even more then Moss.
But we shall see what happens.
So far our poll shows:
7 votes to trade Samuel
4 to sign him to a long term deal
2 to franchise him again in 2008
1 to let him sit out the season.
