While traveling across the US this week, I have had little time to read much on sports and the Patriots.
Today is a day to catch up on such activities and see what is news.
Over at MVN’s the Viking War Cry, Anthony has some info on the speculation (via twoncities.com) of a possible trade between the Vikings and the Patriots to exchange cornerbacks Antoine Winfield and Asante Samuel.
It appears these rumors are also fueled by fannation.com at this link:
http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/6304
sorry boys and girls – that is the fancy link technology of old computers here in the midwest…. and dial up at that.
At any rate, it appears this speculations comes with mixed views from New England fans and those that make it their pledge to hate the Patriots.
The positive side of a trade between the Vikes and Pats seems to be the opportunity of both clubs getting rid of a vocal malcontent (although Winfield is showing up at Vikes practices). Without giving up a big risk of having to find a decent replacement for their CB.
The Vikes would have to pony up a couple of draft picks as well, but hey Samuel is out of the AFC…. and Winfield is hard hitting a sure tackler and cheaper at $6 mil a year.
Negatives on the transaction is getting value for Samuel in the number of picks and which round. Plus the added headache of a NEW disgruntled player coming to the Pats and losing the Patriot Way as AD Thomas, Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Donte’ Stallworth, Kelley Washington, Sammy Morris, Tory James and a few others join the team for the first time this year.
A few fans would prefer to keep Samuel as he already knows the system and what Bill & Co. want to achieve, is a bit younger and has proven himself in 2006.
Well at least there has been a bit of exciting news and Asante is again the topic. Until the first game is played, Asante will continue to be a hot topic, even more then Moss.
But we shall see what happens.
So far our poll shows:
7 votes to trade Samuel
4 to sign him to a long term deal
2 to franchise him again in 2008
1 to let him sit out the season.

the patriots spent a fortune on players this offseason, so I cant even imagine how they would pay him, but if they can they should, granted how much they gave the likes of players like Welker and Stallworth….
You are right TJ, the Patriots have spent a bit of money this offseason, but they were nearly $30 mil under the cap and most of the guys brought in were replacements such as Morris, Brady, James who came in with Patriot cap friendly contracts.
Even the contracts for Stallworth, Washington and yes Moss are not large cap figures, but incentive laden contracts with options after one year.
The true large cap hits have been Thomas and Welker, but the Pats still have $$ room for their rookies and a Patriot friendly Samuel contract.
The Pats are also still looking for other players, recently looking at RB Chris Brown and even DT Adams. So there could be more to do this year.
[...] Looks like Asante Samuel’s holding out for a bigger dollar sign may land him in Minnesota. There is speculation (only speculation thus far) that the Vikings and the Patriots may trade their cornerbacks; Minnesota’s Antoine Winfield for New England’s Samuel. Neither team seems to be ecstatic about the trade. It would be more like putting a band-aid on a minor scratch. [...]
Brent- At this point, it looks like all is well again between Vikings management and Winfield. Winfield was concerned about how Vikes fans were viewing him (as a TO-type player), and this caused him to work things out with Childress. The two still don’t have a great relationship, but for now, Winfield seems content in Minnesota.
Brent, I want to know what you as a Patriots fan feels….do you think that with all the signings ( which may I say is slightly out of character for the Pats organization) that Belicheck is rounding up for one last run at the SB? do you think that he calls it quits if he wins this year, or calls it quits even if they dont….thats just the impression I am getting as most of the moves that I saw from the Pats this offseason looks like a short term solution rather then building for the long haul…(accumualtion of 1st round draft picks aside)
either that or not winning a SB in a few years is making it hard on the Pats…but id opt of for the first option moreso, what do ya think?
Good question TJ, I have seen many writer’s assume this is a last run by Belichick. As his contract is unknown that keeps us fans wondering what is going on.
Kraft says all is well and Bill will be with us a long time. Bill is of course silent on the subject.
Belichick was going after Moss and Stallworth in previous seasons and had interest in Sammy Morris. So I think for Bill and Scott Pioli they have older and more mature players in finally nabbing these guys.
When Bill was coaching the Pro-Bowl this past January he seemed to get along well with Thomas and I had hoped that had sparked some interest from both sides – it appears it did.
Even Welker is a long term Pats player.
Bill is around for awhile and even Scot Pioli is staying with the team. Rumors had both going to the Giants and saying Bill could get $20 million a year, but he has total control now on a team he has built with an owner that trust him and he also seems to trust.
Since we do not know what he is getting paid, I would hope his contract includes proceeds from Patriots ticket sales, consessions or merchandising if not a direct link of a contract obtaining private shares in the Pats themselves.
Long winded but wanted to let you know why with the new players and such that it is not building for now, but also for the next few years.
I’m pretty sure Asante thinks he’s better than he really is. Put him on another team and he won’t produce the numbers he did this past season. Randall Gay anyone?
Where in the midwest do you live?
Hi Chris, I do not live in the midwest, but drove from MA to Indiana to visit relatives. I stopped along the way in CT, NYC, NJ, PA and Ohio visiting friends and other relatives.
By cornhusker – does that mean you are in Nebraska?
Tks,
B
