Patriots in a corner as Scott goes to IR

As Patriot Nation wonders about Asante Samuel and who will replace the cornerback if he and the Patriots do not agree to a contract, things could not look worse.
The Boston Globe and Boston Herald (and here) both report veteran cornerback Chad Scott was put on the Injured Reserve (IR) list, essentially ending his 2007† season before it even started.
A first round draft pick by the Steelers in 1997, Scott looked to be the starting replacement for Samuel until his knee injury at Friday nights training camp when he was carted off the field.
I like Scott and he has always been a dependable and tough starter and pack up for the Pats. Concern for the 32-year old now is how the injury will impact his career.† Scott had a knee injury in 1998 that required reconstruction surgery that also had him miss the ’98 season on IR with the Steelers.
Since Scott’s injury on Friday, the talented, but often injured Randall Gay has been starting in the defensive back line-up. Backing up Gay the past few day sin camp has been veteran Tory James and rookie Brandon Meriweather.
It looks now as if the Patriots opportunity to negotiate with Samuel has taken am unexpected turn. Unless the Pats decide to bring in a new veteran cornerback that can pick up the Patriot’s system, we may soon see Samuel signed.
Hopefully Scott’s injury is not career threatening and he has an good recovery through the season. Scott will be missed.

Patriots 7/30 training camp notes

Yesterday I was in New Hampshire to go watch Social Distortion at the Casino Ballroom. What a blast! It has been a long time since I have been to a show in the Boston area. Although there was no mosh pit it was worth seeing.
There were a few Patriots fan in attendance (as well as a quite a few Dropkick Murphys fans!), so it was good to meet fellow fans and talk about the Patriots and training camp. Having said that, here is today’s update!
Training camp was held today and rookie Kareem Brown was finally in camp and able to participate after allegedly being suspended for 3 days for violating team rules.
The highlights for today comes during the pass rushing drills as running backs and tight ends defended against linebackers. Heath Evans had the the most consistent play as he blocked all incomers – including Tedy Brushi. Kevin Faulk did a good job as usual. Although Sammy Morris was able to stop Bruschi, Morris and Matt Kranchick did not fair that well during the drill.
Tedy Bruschi seemed to have a tough day as he was beat on a 25-yard pass play when covering Faul. Faulk lined up as a receiver and Brady took advantage of Bruschi moving out to cover Faulk. Faulk beat Bruschi, catching the ball down the left sideline before being bounced out of bounds.
Although Bruschi may have lost a step to some, he stepped up during 11 v 11 and popped Sammy Morris coming through the hole sending Morris’ helmet flying in the other direction.
Special teams are always in focus for Bill Belichick and watching players potential. James Sanders, Heath Evans, Kelley Washington, Piere Woods and rookie Oscar Lua were key contributers during the punt blocking drill. Lua seems to be doing well for himself during camp.
Josh Miller has competition as the punting battle seems to improve daily. Last years practice squad and 2007 NFL Europa punters, Danny Baugher and Tom Malone are heating things up for Miller.
Moss continues to impress catching a nice pass from Tom Brady between the coverage of Randall Gay and James Sanders. But communication still needs to improve as on the next play Moss did not see Brady’s signal to change his route. This lead Moss to turn in on his original route as Brady tossed the ball outside.
Tidbits
Brandon Meriweather continues to practice at corner.
Laurence Maroney, Junior Seau and Eric Alexander remain wearing the red non-contact jerseys.
The University of Connecticut (UCONN – Go Huskies!) football coaching staff were special guests attending Patriots camp today.
Absent from camp today were Asante Samuel (Holdout 4th day), Kyle Brady, Garrett Mills, Chad Scott and Rashad Baker
GO PATS!

Meriweather: On Board

The New England Patriots first round pick, Brandon Meriweather, is officially signed and practice with the team today in the closed training camp session.
Meriweather lined up at cornerback for a majority of snaps.
Although Tom Casale, at Patriots Football Weekly, noted Meriweather was covering Wes Welker: advantage Welker, at NFL .com Wire Reports, they seemed to believe Meriweather looked pretty good covering Randy moss.
When Belichick was asked on Meriweather’s role, Bill commented:

Pats Camp Update Evening 7/27

As I arrived late to evening camp (read the end about my frustration) due to traffic, Tom Brady and the quarterbacks were warming up throwing short passes near the hill.
I took a convenient place right by the bush next to the stairs leading to the stands so I was out of everyone’s way.
Soon the horn blew and various sets of drills began. By the hill there were punting drills taken by Josh Miller & Co. out to Bam Childress and Wes Welker. Miller still needs to improve as he looked terrible. Dan Baugher had a nice high spiral that Childress had to go back to catch.
Another drill was the punt coverage with Willie Andrews doing well drawing cheers from the crowd. Gemara Williams was not so lucky and heard it from Coach Seely.
There were a few drills having running backs and tight ends going one-on-one versus the linebackers. Maroney did well going by Tedy Bruschi, Watson left Rodney Harrison falling in the dirt and Kyle Brady just seemed to hit everyone far off the line to clear his own path to the ball.
In 7-on-7 drills, Brady did pretty well throwing and although he did throw one behind Watson, Watson reached back to grab it falling and lifted the ball up with the catch! The crowd went crazy cheering.
Wes Welker and Jabar Gaffney both ran crisp routes and caught everything thrown their way. While Welker is sure to make the team, Gaffney is taking advantage of other receivers being on the PUP and continuing to play like he during last year’s playoffs.
At one point CJ Jones was runinng into coverage down the right side of the field and had a huge leap catching the ball and running down field. Amongst the oohhs and aaahs of the crowd was “Who is that?” If Jones keeps playing that way more people will know soon enough.
As mentioned in the earlier roster update, Chad Scott was injured and carted off the field with a leg injury. This will impact the depth the Pats have in training camp as well as opening day if Scott is unable to come back and Asante Samuel is not signed.
Overall it was a good evening at camp. The offensive line took their turn signing autographs for the fans along the rope. Logan Mankins was the last one out their signing – even though he was approached twice (assuming he was being asked to go to the locker room) after the others were already gone – he remained to sign near the bush/stairs that was neglected when the linemen first came over to begin their autographs.
Da horrah!
I arrived a bit late for the beginning of the evening camp as traffic on 495 was horrendous. You would have thought another plane landed in the road…. plus WEEI was still talking about Michael Vick – ugh enough already!! They could have talked Sox or Pats training camp… but every time they would start moving away from Vick callers would bring it right back!
Thankfully training camp is upon us and we may now enjoy the news about our Patriot team!
GO PATS AND STAY HEALTHY!!

Patriots roster moves 7/27

The Patriots announced Donte’ Stallworth was added to the PUP list and they released rookie running back Justise Hairston.
This is not a good sign for Stallworth as we know familiarity plays a key role between Brady and receivers down the stretch for the season.
For Hairston to start on the PUP list then be released may mean he was just too far away from training camp shape. Too bad for a kid that seemed to appreciate the opportunity coming from Central Connecticut.
Cornerback Chad Scott was injured in training camp and was carted off the field. The injury seemed to be his knee. Although a few predict Ellis Hobbs may move to left corner and Gay will take over at right corner. Gay did a pretty good job in the past at left.
Scott’s injury does little to help the Patriots cornerback depth as they are still without Asante Samuel.
Brandon Meriweather has signed a five year deal and will participate in Saturday’s camp. Saturday’s camp is closed to the public.
STAY HEALTHY!

Meriweather: contract details to be finalized

According to reports from the Boston Globe and Boston Herald, first round pick Brandon Meriweather’s contract should be signed today and Meriweather potentially could attend this afternoon’s session.
Today’s morning session went well with end of training autographs signings by the running backs, as well as Brady, Moss, Vrabel, Bruschi, and Woods.

Pats Camp Morning 7/27: Player updates

Training camp is under way and reports are in already on the heat and humidity. Great!
A few players are already missing on day one:
Troy Brown (PUP)
Richard Seymour (PUP)
Chad Jackson (PUP)
David Thomas (PUP)
Eddie Jackson (PUP)
Justise Hairston (PUP)
Mel Mitchell (PUP)
Asante Samuel – contract not signed
Donteí Stallworth – rumor has it he is suffering a hamstring injury
Brandon Meriweather – contract not signed
Kareem Brown – in the dog house already for breaking a team rule and is suspended until Monday… rookies! or is it the U?
Laurence Maroney, Junior Seau and Eric Alexander are all wearing red non-contact jerseys. The Quarterbacks are also sporting the red garb today.
Rodney Harrison is not wearing a knee brace, so he will be one to watch during camp to see if/when he has to use one. Harrison is one of my favorite players to watch, so I am hoping for a full healthy year for him!
AD Thomas is lining up at inside linebacker and calling plays, it makes you wonder how the mix will be in the middle and will Vrabel be outside the full year.
I like the defensive side of the team and I think the place to watch will be cornerback in absence of Asante Samuel and Brandon Meriweather.
Offensively the wide receiver battle should be good and Kelly Washington, Reche Caldwell and Jabar Gaffney have the most to lose in camp.
Otherwise, I am still concerned about Maroney’s shoulder and his longevity in 2007.

Patriots competition begins in camp

Whether the Patriots make it to the Super Bowl or not is determined by many factors.
From coaches coaching strategy to players executing to the littlest details, the final proof for some will be making on to the field (ahem Washington), while for others it will be remaining on the roster after the first cuts.
Every year there is turnover as players are replaced in one form or another. The new players, whether veterans or rookies, will have their first Belichickian experience.
Bill Belichick knows football and he understands football players. Training camp will show the fans and media if the players understand Belichick.
The competition will be tough (even for veterans) over the next few weeks there will praise, concern, surprises and hopefully no injuries.
The Patriot Act will cover as much as we can, but there will be plenty of news as Patriots Football Weekly will have their training camp blog in full swing and Mrs. B’s Patriot World will continue her annual tradition of covering training camp!
There is also a new provider of Patriots news as Patriots Daily will start new website for daily news and updates on the Patriots during the upcoming season.
As mentioned in previous updates, I will be attending the evening training camp session tomorrow and look forward to meeting Patriot fans, players and coaches.
LET THE CAMP BEGIN!

Tedy Bruschi and Paul McCartney

Luckily for my blood pressure and the integrity of my coronary arteries, I didn’t find out that the “Certain well-known Boston Sports Figure is Dead” rumor concerned Tedy Bruschi until long after it had reared its unsubstantiated head and then been safely debunked. By the time I found out about it, Michael Felger on WEEI, who clued in Boston Sports Media Watch, and BSMW itself, which clued me in, were both taking the high road and not naming the player the rumor was about. Much later on, already having been assured that the rumor was baseless, false, fictitious, inaccurate and just plain wrong, I came across a post on Bostonist which did name names.
