An undrafted rookie free agent in April of 2004, cornerback Randall Gay took advantage of what the New England Patriots had to offer.
The Patriots liked Gay’s versatility and ability to play cornerback, free safety and special teams. Gay impressed the coaches and due to injuries to Ty law and Tyrone Poole ended up starting in nine games during the 2004 season, as well as, all three playoffs games and Super Bowl XXXIX, finishing tied for third on the team with 18 tackles during the post season.
Expectations were high in 2005 as Gay started 2 of 5 games – again playing cornerback, safety and special teams – before suffering an ankle injury and placed on injured reserve November 15th 2005.
2006 was an opportunity for Gay to return to full health and provide much needed depth and experience until a hamstring injury again derailed his season and only after three games was put on injured reserve September 27, 2006.
Bill Belichick & Co. must still like the possibilities Gay has to offer as they listed Gay as a restricted free agent during the 2007 offseason. This enabled the Patriots to match any offer if other teams were interested or receive a second round draft choice in compensation if Gay were to be picked up by another team.
Gay made out in the process as he now has a one year contract worht $1.3 million even though he only played about six games the last two years.
If Randall Gay can make it back to the player he was in 2004 and play a full and healthy season in 2007, then the Patriots will have a much improved defensive backfield.
If Asante Samuel also returns for a full year in 2007, this could be the best defensive backfield the Patriots have had since 2003.
IN BILL WE TRUST!!
