Although it should come to no surprise, the New England Patriots and cornerback Asante Samuel did not reach an agreement by today’s 4pm contract deadline.
This means Asante will only receive his one year tender offer of $7.79 million for 2007 from the Patriots.†
The options for Asante are to†play the full year to receive the total $7.79m or hold out until game 10 and then come back to the Patriots in order to complete a ‘good’ contract year according to NFL guidelines.
Either way Samuel must decide the next step for himself and his family.
The Patriots are a better team with Samuel, but it is hard for me to think he would not agree to $6 million†over a 3-year deal and yet decide to play a full season for $7.79 million.

I’d really like to keep Samuel in a Patriots uniform but I think he’s being a little ridiculous turning down that reported deal where he’d get $6 mill/year over the first 3 years of the contract. Hopefully he’ll come to his senses, come to camp, play well this season and maybe get a new deal after this upcoming season. Anybody think the corner market will calm down and get to more senisble deals, or is the only way we can get a good corner gonna be to spend ridiculous money (or get lucky in the draft)?
DeAngelo Hall is going to be a free agent next year. You can bet he will demand a Nate Clements contract and keep the CB market price high…
I bet Atlanta franchises him. But that will definitely keep the corner market high.
