Meriweather: On Board

The New England Patriots first round pick, Brandon Meriweather, is officially signed and practice with the team today in the closed training camp session.
Meriweather lined up at cornerback for a majority of snaps.
Although Tom Casale, at Patriots Football Weekly, noted Meriweather was covering Wes Welker: advantage Welker, at NFL .com Wire Reports, they seemed to believe Meriweather looked pretty good covering Randy moss.
When Belichick was asked on Meriweather’s role, Bill commented:

ìWeíll work him at both spots. Heís played a lot of different positions in college.Heís played the nickel position, the corner position, the safety position. Weíll use him in some different spots and see how it goes. People on our team are going to have to have some versatility and play different spots anyway, so he falls into that category.î

During today’s session, Randall Gay started at left cornerback in place of injured Chad Scott who was not at camp today after yesterday’s leg injury.
Meriweather is now sporting jersey number 31. He previously wore 38 during the June mini-camp. With Antwain Spann being released, that freed up number 31.
GO PATS!

I’ll probably change my mind but I’d love for Meriweather to stay at safety. From there he could cover man-on-man, play center field, blitz, crowd the line, etc. It seems safety is a more flexible position than cornerback and would best utilize what seems to be his many talents. Plus Rodney won’t be around too much longer!

Although James Sanders got burned on a few plays last year, he is still a young guy and playing much like Eugene Wilson did his first year.
If Wilson can come back strong in his last year of contract and Sanders continues to mold himself after Harrison, I would have a bit more confidence if anything happens to Harrison.
If Wilson is not up to speed this year, he could be done w the Pats
