The Pats announced the signing of 43 year old quarterback Vinny Testeverde, who is now entering his 21st season. This move was expected, as it was reported that the Pats would sign Vinny after the two-a-day practices were over. What was not expected was the release of veteran Safety/Cornerback Artrell Hawkins. Hawkins had been out with an undisclosed injury since Aug. 8. Hawkins did a great job stabilizing the Pats’ secondary the past couple of years when injuries struck (namely to Rodney Harrison and Eugene Wilson). The depth in the secondary is already a concern, which makes this release all the more confusing to me. It is possible that Hawkins was let go to free up a roster spot until he is fully healed from his injury, as he is unable to be placed on the PUP list, having already participated in practices. This leaves only Rashad Baker, James Sanders, Mel Mitchell, and Brandon Meriweather as the backups at safety to Rodney and Eugene.
The Patriots also released LB Kyle Bissinger and DB Gemera Williams. Both were already longshots to make the roster. It will be interesting if the Patriots bring in Testeverde at ome point this year to throw a TD pass like they did last year against the Titans. If they do, Vinny would add another season onto his” 20 straight seasons with a TD pass” record.

It is too bad about Hawkins.
He was one of the guys that kept the team going the past few years due to the injuries to Harrison.
Like Chad Scott, Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli now how to find smart guys that can contribute to a winning team.
Always remember that the Pats usually need guys during the year, so if Hawkins injuries clear up and there is a need? you never know.
Otherwise I would expect the Jets to call him….
Quick Hawkins follow-up. The door IS open for a return with the Patriots later on when his injuries heal up. He would like to get into broadcasting when all is said and done, but he does want to play one more year.
