First, my apologies†about the lateness of this post–it’s taken me a full two days to resurface after the Red Sox buried me in happiness†Sunday.
Second, let’s all pause a moment to reflect on what a great time this is to be a Boston sports fan.

Running up the score?
Greg Trippiedi from Hog Heaven wrote a terrific article on the “running up the score” debate that you simply can’t escape if you’re watching any NFL coverage today. You can read it here.
The only thing I will add to that is that I think a big contributing factor to what we’re seeing thus far is last year’s AFC Championship Game. The Pats were way ahead and dominating that game, and Peyton Manning led the Colts back in the second half to deny the Patriots another Superbowl. Belichick does not want that to happen again, so he’s instilling a mindset in this team now not to let up, not to take the foot off the gas, or†history†could repeat itself. I believe that takes precedent over any “Spygate” motivation.†

Never mind
Disregard almost everything I wrote in my pregame article. Wow. That’s all I have to say. Wow.

Pats' offense faces tough test against the Redskins
The New England Patriots will host the Washington Redskins Sunday in what will be the offense’s toughest test to date. The Redskins’ defense ranks in the top 5 or the top 10 in many major defensive categories, including points per game allowed (3rd), passing defense (8th), rushing defense (5th), and total defense (5th). Washington’s secondary includes a slew of first round draft picks, including this past draft’s first rounder, safety LaRon Landry. Their secondary also boasts hard-hitting safety Sean Taylor, and corners Fred Smoot, Carlos Rogers, and Shawn Springs. We’ve often said here at The Patriot Act, “If you cover†our #1 WR,†who will cover our 2nd and 3rd WR’s?” Well, the Skins have the horses to do so.
Seymour returns to practice
Good news for Patriots fans: Pro Bowl defensive lineman Richard Seymour returned to practice today and could be eligible to play this Sunday, or the following week at Indy. Having Seymour in the lineup would be a huge boost to a defense that has struggled a bit as of late against the run. Washington comes to town this week with two tough runningbacks in Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts.†
Just keeping an eye on the injury report, safety Eugene Wilson did not participate in practice with an ankle inury, along with TE Ben Watson (ankle) and RB Sammy Morris (chest). Notable names removed from the injury report are RB Laurence Maroney, LB Adalius Thomas, G Stephen Neal, CB Randall Gay, and WR Donte Stallworth.

Just what kind of name is Cleo Lemon?
Not one that belongs to anybody who’s gonna beat the Patriots, that’s for sure.
Much like Jaime, I was not at full-blown cockiness heading in to this week’s contest; in fact, I would estimate my confidence to have been higher before the game against an undefeated Dallas than before today’s game against a winless Miami.

Fish try and set a trap for the Patriots
Following a statement-making game against the Dallas Cowboys and two weeks before a game with the currently undefeated Indianapolis Colts, the New England Patriots head south to Miami to face a winless Dolphins team. Usually when 6-0 meets 0-6, there’s no cause for concern for the undefeated team. However, as most Patriot fans know, the winless Dolphins are a mammal of a different color.

New England Patriots counter Cowboys trash talk with cold dose of reality

Okay, so maybe Beth’s a little bit biased…
For some reason, the New England area boasts a disproportionate number of displaced Cowboys fans. This probably dates back to the days of the Cowboys as “America’s Team” when certain frontrunning types in New England apparently decided to jump on the ‘boys bandwagon rather than following the home team, which at the time was still known as the “Patsies” with good reason.
So all week, I’ve been hearing a disproportionate amount of noise from the odd coworker / business associate / radio caller locally about how the undefeated Cowboys were going to walk out the only undefeated team yesterday, how TO was going to run all over the Patriots, how Tony Romo is every bit as good as Tom Brady, etc.
Hence my disclaimer to you all: now that the Patriots have won, I am now going to address said Cowboys homerism from a standpoint of extreme Patriots prejudice. What will follow from me will contain displays of significant Patriots bias and maybe even a little gloating, so any Jets fans in the audience can start preparing their retorts now.

Showdown in Big D
Sunday, the 5-0 New England Patriots travel to Dallas, TX to face the 5-0 Dallas Cowboys. The Pats are currently 0-4 at Texas Stadium and hope to break that unlucky streak. This much-hyped game features two teams that are either #1, #2, or tied for #1 or 2 in most NFL categories. It features two defensive-minded coaches in Wade Philips and Bill Belichick, both proponents of the 3-4 scheme. While both run the 3-4, they run the scheme differently, with Philips imploying a scheme of athleticism and attack, and Belichick with intelligence and pressure. The ‘Boys are really enjoying their new head coach, who is much looser than the man he replaced, Bill Parcells. Being motivated to play for their coach won’t be a problem, but the Pats may have gotten some extra motivation this week to play for Belichick (not that they don’t play hard for him anyway).
T.O. Grabs Attention While Trying to Avoid It
I got home from work today, put ESPN on just in time to catch the start of “NFL Live,” and what do I see before my eyes? The beginning of the media storm surrounding the upcoming “Battle of the Undefeated’s” between the Dallas Cowboys and the New England Patriots. Who’s in the center of it? None other than Mr. Drive-way Crunches himself, Terrell Owens, or T.O., if you will. Now T.O. supposedly was trying to stay away from the media frenzy and sound bite hogs that gather around his locker, so he left a note behind that read as follows:
“Due to the magnitude of this week’s game and high volume of questions for the Original 81 about the other 81, I will be taking all questions immediately following Sunday’s game.
(signed) Terrell Owens
P.S. Getcha popcorn ready.”
