Thanks Plax!

It was bound to happen sooner or later. Somebody had to come out and say something, anything, that could be used as bulletin board material. WR Plaxico Burress has said words that turned one coach’s stomach sideways and turned another’s lips into a crooked smile. Burress has guaranteed a Giants winon Super Bowl Sunday. He even was nice enough to provide us with a score: 23 – 17. I have no problems with players being confident that they can win a game. Heck, if they don’t, they should hang up their cleats. However, if there is any team that takes such a comment as a dig, it’s the New England Patriots. Opposing players stating that they think they can win is one thing, but as soon as the word “guarantee” accompanies the statement, the Pats rally, as Anthony Smith of the Steelers found out. I’m sure the score prediction was amusing to the Patriots as well. Surely, Belichick had to smile slightly when he heard that comment, as he knows what that does to his players.

That coach whose stomach was turning I mentioned, that would be Tom Coughlin. He knows how those statements affect the Patriots. Here was his response:

I was not aware of that,” said Coughlin, who shook his head. “We’ve had a good theme all year and it hasn’t been that. We do our talking on the field.”

Plax’s comments have elicited responses from the Patriots themselves. Tom Brady kind of laughed off the comments, saying with a smile:

We’re only going to score 17 points? Does Plaxico play defense? I wish he said 45-42, or something like that.”

Randy Moss also responded, but wasn’t quite so jovial.

He’s entitled to say anything, but the only thing about a prediction is that you have got to make it happen. I think the pressure is more on them now since they’ve guaranteed this victory. We’re going to go out there and try to execute a game-plan. We’ve prepared very hard for the last week and a half and we still have got a couple more days to get out there and tone some things up, but making a prediction that you are going to go out there and make it happen are very tough words to back up. So like I said, we’ll see when the game clock is zero on Sunday.”

To Plax’s credit, he hasn’t backed off of his words

    Ask Anthony Smith about guarantees

  3. GUARD53 says:

you know , being from ma. i never knew why people hated the pats so much . now i know . first of all no ” guarantee ” was made ,only the score, not who was going to win !! being a rabid celtics fan , i watch the celtics station all the time and can’t believe the crap they say about the giants , that a**hole felger actually said their secondary is ” garbage ” and much more ridicule ,,,,real nice commentery. everyone knows the pats should win, but to be that obnoxtus is not reporting . but the game still has to be played on the field , not paper and for one game anything can happen .

  4. BigKev says:

Patriot fans arent even real fans. they only jumped on the banwagon when they started winning champioships. and lets not forget that new england residents were giants fans originally because they didnt like the patriots because they sucked for so long “hence the banwagon issue” and as for the guarantee thing. i dont agree with it but he was talking about the giants winning but he isnt a nobody like Anthony Smith. he is in the top 5-10 wide recievers in the game today so there is a difference

  5. Brent says:

sorry big Kev – you can think that all you want, but it is not true for everyone – i followed the Pats since the 70′s and lived in Virginia surrounded by ‘Skins, Colts, Eagles and Miami fans…
but as for bandwagoners – you should now check out the giaints. they have come out of the woodwork now that they have done so well this year.
even here in Europe I have been wearing Patriots gear and Red Sox and only now do I see Giants fans.
Most people in Europe wear a Yankees cap , because they think the NY means New York, they do not follow baseball and never have heard of the Yankees.

  6. rOBNY77 says:

Listen,It’s great that the Patriots and Redsox are on a current hot streak winning championships for there town, but I wouldn’t trade a few years of success compared to there horrible past for decades, sorry! Even more so Boston. The Redsox winning 2 in the past 4 years doesn’t erase the 80+ YEARS of misery they endured! I’d rather be a Yankee franchise known for consistency year in and year out then win one every 15 years or be competitive for the fans once or twice a decade! Take Met fans for example,a Franchise that avg’s 1 division title every 18 years with 2 world championships since 1962,whats so good about that? Met fans chirp on a daily basis in NY all because they have a DECENT team the past few seasons, and still won NOTHING! They forget how the Braves owned them for 14 straight seasons or whatever it was.In order to measure a teams greatness and success you have to take everything into consideration…past, present, and future! The Giants have always been a proud franchise from the beginning of football to now! They never were the joke of the league like the Patriots once were. Yes,I give all the credit in the world to Bellicheck and the organization for turning them around, but overall as a Franchise they are only 366-349,that’s a .512 winning percentage. So yes,the Pats and Sox are great now,but I wouldnt trade a few years of succes for DECADES AND DECADES of being laughed with letdown after letdown!

  7. Angel says:

Especially when that team has made such guarantee men look foolish all season.
Yeah, But we’re talking about the G-Men…we are not other team’s, we’re the NY.GIANTS.
Before ya had 7 years of FAME…
    There was NY.GIANTS.
It’s 2008…time to set the tone straight.
How long the Patriots have bin winnig in the last 7 years, plus the 3 SUPERBOWL’S?
come on!!!! ya guys got FAT!
While other’s STARVE…TIME TO BRING IT BACK TO NEW YORK!!!!!!
    GO GIANTS! THE GGGGGGGGGGGGG-MEN!!!!!!!

  8. Jamie says:

First off, the reason there are “so many” Giants fans in New England was because the Giants were OUR HOME TEAM! They were the closest professional football in the area before the Pats came along with the AFL. Don’t believe me? Look it up. Many folks still have allegiances to the old home team.
Secondly, how many Super Bowls have the Giants won? Two. How many have the Pats won? Three going on four. How many Super Bowl appearances do the Giants have? 3 going on 4. The Pats? 5 going on 6. Anything else? Oh! How about our record 21 game winning streak. Perhaps our current 18-0 record? The past is the past. We’re in 2008, just in case you were unaware. We’re about to accomplish something that will be remembered for the ages. By the way, you can thank our head coach for helping you get those two Super Bowl titles.

  9. Jamie says:

One last thing. Giants fans are the last fans who should be talking about bandwagon hopping. Truth be told, the G-Men are the team that I root for to win the NFC due to them being the team of my best friend, so I follow them fairly closely. All season, and much of the previous seasons, Giants “fans” have been crapping on Eli Manning and Tom Coughlin, and now all of a sudden they’re embracing these guys? That is the definition of bandwagon hopping. I heard it from my buddy all season. I think I supported Eli more than so-called Giants fans. Even Aaron Ross caught flack from Giants fans earlier this season, starting in training camp (just check old G101 posts/comments), and now he’s probably their best corner, or a close second. So please, save me your bandwagon garbage, especially since I’ve been following this team since I was in elementary school.

  10. Ed says:

I think your jumping to conclusions a bit. I think you saw this on ESPN and immediatley visioned a cocky Plaxico Burress writing off the Pats. What actually happened went a little bit more like this:
Burress is emptying his car and walking towards the locker room.
Reporter: “Are you ready to make history Plax?”
    Plax: “You better believe it.”
    Reporter: “Any prediction?”
    Plax: “23-17.”
Thats how it happened. No team, no reasoning just a score. No putting down the Pats, no saying how much better the Giants are just a score. He then backed himself up by saying, “Hey, it’s ok to want to win.”
Lets not jump to conclusions and look at the facts. That goes for you and those “experts” on ESPN.

  11. Marc says:

Hey Kev! I’m one of those Bandwaggoners that you talk about… I’ve only been a fan since 1966. So I have been through the downs and am totally enjoying this ride along the top now. I got a pretty good laugh over your comment about Plaxico being in the top 5-10 for receivers. The best part is that most of the top 5 receivers are with our Patriots. GO PATRIOTS

  12. Andrew Farrar says:

But it looks like it’s all over for the Patriots, I’m afraid. The clot who writes in the Dallas section of MVN has gone for the Patriots.

  13. Jamie says:

    Ed
Perhaps you misunderstood what I wrote. If you go back to paragraph one, you will notice that I personally have no problem with Plax’s prediction. I was merely indicating that the Patriots take stuff like that and run with it. I think you’re jumping to conclusions a bit.

  14. Evan Brunell says:

Yo fellas, leave your super bowl prediction here:
    http://mvn.com/outsider/2008/01/29/mvn-jerome-bettis-giveaway/
You could win a Jerome Bettis football if your prediction is right.
    It really IS that simple!

  15. Andrew Farrar says:

By the way, the greatest broadcasting institution in the whole wide world, the British Broadcasting Corporation (good old “Auntie Beeb”) will be televising its first ever superbowl on Sunday.
And that’s jolly good news, since it means I won’t have to put up with the numpties on Sky Sports.
And the NFL seems to have commited itself to holding a regular season fixture in the UK for the next three seasons:
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/other_sports/american_football/7194603.stm

  16. BigKev says:

hey Marc if you think wes welker and stallworth are better recievers than plax than you really dont watch football.
first off welker and stallworth dont get doubled or triple covered as much as plax does. thats why they have success.
secon even with getting doubled he is playing on a torn ligament in his ankle all year and still put up great numbers. more tds than welker and stallworth and more yards than stallworth as well.
Plax has shown time and time again that there are very few DB’s than can cover him just look at the footage of him owning al harris in the championship game.

  17. BigKev says:

and as for giants fans being banwagoners thats another dumb statement by another dumb patriot fan. look at our site on mvn and look at all the articles dating back to the beginning of the year and US giants fans are all over it. look at your blog, even your own writer created an article about how unpationate you guys are at the games. the bottom line is every team has there hardcore fans thats been with them through thick and thin but EVERYONE knows that when you guys won that first championship there was alot of MASS fans jumping on the banwagon so dont sit there and try to preach to me about any of that because you are just lying to yourself.

  18. Jamie says:

It appears as though reading comprehension skills are lacking in this country. When I said alot of Giants fans are jumping on the bandwagon, I SPECIFICALLY said the Eli Manning/Tom Coughlin bandwagon, and Aaron Ross to a lesser extent, not the Giants team itself. Look at G101 comments from the season if you don’t believe me, and this is also backed up by a hardcore Giants fan I know that showed patience in waiting for Eli to develop. Now, if you go back to the beginning of the year, as you suggested, you may be correct, because the Giants have yet to lose in 2008.
Lastly, there are bandwagon jumpers on every team. However, while Gillette has been quiet lately, it has been SOLD OUT EVERY YEAR since Kraft bought the team in the early 90′s, almost a whole decade before our first championship.

  19. Colin says:

I refuse to take seriously anyone who doesn’t know how to spell passionately right or use proper sentence structure/punctuation in their arguments. It’s almost as bad as the high school kids on Facebook or the shitty comments left on Fox Sports (without a doubt the worst sports news site I’ve seen).
I used to respect the Giants and their fans but you guys keep coming out of the woodwork and continue to start talking shit. Everyone wants to jump on the hater wagon for some dumbass reason. Oh Lord, they ran up the score, what a bunch of jerks. Hey other team that got smashed by New England, grow a pair or just play better football! The reason why the Pats do so well is because of their skill, Belichick’s coaching (if anyone screams cheater or some other dumbass slogan you’re officially a fucking asshole/moron), and most imporantly, adaptability. Welker, Faulk, Stallworth, and Company do so well because they can adapt to coverages and come through with clutch plays while Brady works well with coordinating with them. I don’t think many heard of Plaxico Burress until now so don’t ride his coattails Giants fans and don’t think he’s the next Messiah. He’s good but you fail to realize, as Jaime put it, when he or other players start saying things that could either be interpreted as insults, stupidity, or threats, Belichick and the rest do take it to heart and usually serve up some steamed crow. Also BigKev last time I checked Welker held a record. Guess he’s not so marginal eh there?

  20. Brent says:

Big Kev, do you seriously think the Giants do not have a new bandwagoners because of all they have accomplished this year?
Giants now have bandwagoners with all they have acheived w Eli and Coughlin and are now in the Super Bowl. Others have just jumped on beacuse they hate the Patriots and believe the Giants will stop the Pats from going 19-0. wake up

  21. Angel says:

Giants now have bandwagoners with all they have acheived w Eli and Coughlin and are now in the Super Bowl. Others have just jumped on beacuse they hate the Patriots and believe the Giants will stop the Pats from going 19-0. wake up
Eyo Son, I’ma True GIANTS FAN FROM THE BOOGIE DOWN BRONX DON…when Back in 86 WE NEVER HEARD OF YA….

  22. Jamie says:

Anybody have a translation of that?
    I was 4 in ’86…

  23. Andrew Farrar says:

    I was considerably older than 4 in 1986, in fact, I was like a Land Rover Discovery: a 4 x 4.
Some of the fellows at school were interested in the colonial sport of American Football and they kept asking what team I supported. Well, I didn’t support any, but saw an article in a newspaper about the New England team making the play-offs, so I decided to follow them.
Much hilarity and ridicule followed from my peers. But I almost had the last laugh, as the little Patriots made it all the way to Super Bowl XX, where, rather like a baddie in a cartoon, they were crushed by a fridge.
I do remember the AFC championship fixture very well. I didn’t actually watch it, but one of the fellows was a mad keen Miami supporter (he seemed to have an unnatural infatuation for Dan Marino) and he was going to watch it. He was jolly glum the next day, so I sensed all had not gone well for Marino and Co.
I did watch the Superbowl that year – we (as in New England) scored first, but that was about as good as it got against Ditka’s Bears.
Anyway, the years passed by (with ever increasing speed, so it seems) and I always made the effort to watch the Superbowl at least. But the Patriots weren’t there very often, until recently.
I’ve watched more fixtures this season, after reading about young Belichick’s indescretion earlier in the season. I like him, he’s a sound chap

  24. Andrew Farrar says:

Well, Plaxico (who the hell gives their son a name like Plaxico, I ask you? Okay, obviously Mr and Mrs Burress) Burress wasn’t that far out, was he?
