So having landed in Dublin and looking forward to a full week of work on Monday, I find myself having a bit of fun first.
Saturday I go to the Ireland verus Italy rugby match in the first game of the 6 Nations rugby tournament. What does rugby have to do with the NFL?
Rugby was born from soccer (or football for the European readers). American or Grid Iron Football was born from rugby.
Many Europeans are interested to know that Americans are aware of rugby in the US and I have found it interesting how many Europeans are aware of American football.
So far all the people I have met are asking me about the Super Bowl and about Tom Bradyand the Patriots. They know of the record setting 19-0 scenario with a Super Bowl win.
A few people think the Giants have Peyton Manning and have never heard of Eli Manning – even though the Giants have played in London this year.
I think it will be an interesting few days meeting new people and discussing sports both rugby and the NFL. Who knows maybe I will

And Brent watch a very unconvincing performance from the Irish as they defeated Italy this afternoon:

There are actually two codes of rugby – union and league. Rugby league split off from rugby union sometime last century, I think, over payments to players. Rugby was an amateur sport, with the players receiving nothing from the clubs for playing. But some northern clubs wanted to pay their players.
There were good reasons for this. Rugby in the south was largely the preserve of the well-to-do, who were much thinner on the ground in the industrial north. And in the days before the welfare state, working people didn’t get paid for days they missed at work – so the working class players from the northern clubs struggled if injured and unable to work.
But no agreement could be reached, perhaps because the Northern clubs were successful and there was envy of that from the Southern-based establishment. So, the Northern clubs split off and created their own professional sport – rugby league.
And now rugby union is professional as well.
Enjoy the game my friend. Glad you found a spot to watch it.
THE FOOTBALL GODS BE PRAISED. GO PATS!!!!!!!
