Congratulations New York Giants

Nice job by the G-Men tonight. They certainly played like giants and deserved to win the game. They won the battle in the trenches, holding the New England offense to only 14 points. The loss was a team loss. You can’t blame the offense or the defense. Both put the team in position to win, yet both contributed to the loss.
Although Belichick went and greeted Coughlin at midfield before the final kneeldown, he should have stayed out there for that final play. That was a classless move, and I’m very disappointed in Belichick for doing that. Much analysis will be made over the coming weeks as to why exactly the Pats lost. Overconfidence? Jinx by the Globe’s already produced book, a la “Dewey Defeats Truman”? My guess is they simply were outplayed. If anybody says it’s the Giselle jinx, like the Jessica Simpson jinx, then they’re dumb. We, as Patriots fans, should simply acknowledge that on this night, teh New York Giants were the better team.

  1. Andrew Farrar says:

The Giants were easily the better team, although at least New England’s noble defence put up a bit of a fight.
The Giants deserved their win and I congratulate them on it – they were outstanding.

  2. Mike Zoran says:

Yes I have to agree with the final kneel down. I would like to look back to see who the Patriot players were that actually went out there for that.
But class act here to the Patriot Act for the quick congrats. Great season to your boys.

  3. Andrew Farrar says:

No, it wasn’t a great season.
As Genghis Khan once said “a deed is only glorious once it is complete”. And he knew what he was talking about: Genghis Khan is the greatest commander known to history.

  4. beth says:

so…it’s not enough that they lost, now we have to have a headcount for who went out there and watched the final play of the game when there were fans and cameramen all over the field? why? why does it matter? the patriots lost. the giants won. enjoy the gloating and let that be the end of it.

  5. ROBNY77 says:

Jaime….spoken like a true gentlemen! Huge props to the Pats….theyre a sickkkk team with insane talent. I can’t say the same for RedSox fans though lol Great game all around though…..a true classic.Tom Brady is a class act!

  6. Colin says:

Certainly a bad game for New England…and perhaps the worst of all timing.
Brady played like garbage, the O-Line played like garbage, and the defense blew it when it counted most. I hate to say it, but they didn’t deserve to win this one.
Right now I wouldn’t be surprised if Belichick is murdering Brady and the offensive line right now for fucking up so badly.
Red Sox have the WS, Giants have the SB, so let’s see who can break the tie. Certainly not the Knicks har har.

  7. Samuel Lam says:

I don’t understand what you just said about Belichick being out there for the final play. They had to get everyone off the field to get that one official play in.

  8. Jamie says:

    LT #56
Funny but I get Giants fans telling me what a douchebag you are on the other Giants message boards. Thanks for confirming my suspicions. You should be ashamed of yourself for that T.O. comment. Ridiculous. I think the true LT, who wore #56, wouldn’t think too kindly of those comments. What a disgrace.

  9. Jamie says:

    Samuel
What I meant was that Belichick should have been on his sideline for that final kneeldown. Yes, he had already went out to congratulate Tom Coughlin because I’m sure he thought time had expired, but when it was clear there was a final kneeldown, he should have remained out there.

  10. MarBro456 says:

Thank you guys for your team playing in a very tough, hard fought game. Regardless of who would have won, it was still a great superbowl. As a Giant fan, I am lucky to be able to bask in their glory. Still, regardless of losing he game, the Pats are still a great team, one of the best.

  11. Jamie says:

Thanks MarBro456. This is a tough one to swallow though, going so far and coming up short.

  12. Godzilla says:

Thanks for the congrats. Yes i also think that was classless by belichick, but that’s what i expected. I think the Patriots organization should really take a deep look at itself and decide if belichick is the coach they want leading but more importantly representing their team.

  13. Giants Fan Sid says:

Good game, Pats fans. I was shocked and I’m still shocked. But it was a hard fought game between two elite teams and this is why I love the NFL.
We all know that this is not the last Superbowl appearance of the Bellichick-Brady era and I hope that its not the last for Eli and the Giants either.

  14. poppi says:

Belichick…. I thought would have had more class then what he showed on this evening… What a classless act on his part … I was under the impression that him and T.C. we’re very good friends on & off lthe field … Especially their families.. Well it really does’nt matter anymore because the NEW YORK FOOTBALL GIANTS WON THE SUPERBOWL……WHAT A GREAT TIME IT IS TO BE A GIANT FAN…..With a tweak here an there we could find ourselfs in the superbowl next year definding our title… Congrads to us giant fans the greatest & smartest fans in pro football…. Way to go giants & Eli our MVP… Go Giants….

  15. Samuel Lam says:

You’re right. But that’s the kind of guy Bill is though…

  16. HopLax08 says:

Jamie – nice article, nice gesture, showed class. hard to not like a Pats fan like you (and Beth too, I read her articles as well). both teams have tremendous football teams and will, no doubt, face each other again on this stage in the near future. btw, it was the pressure up the middle that was the Pats undoing that i posted on your article yesterday. justin tuck is probably the most valuable player on the Giants D, now and in the future. good luck and take care.

  17. beth says:

agreed, hoplax, tuck should’ve been the mvp of the game. eli winning it is a joke.

  18. Andrew Farrar says:

It always seems to go to an offensive player and usually the quarterback.

  19. Jamie says:

    HoPlax08
Props on calling the pressure up the middle. I expected better, especially from Logan Mankins. He was a major disappointment last night, as was the offensive line as a whole. At least you guys know you’re in good hands on defensive end if Strahan decides to retire.
    LT #56
    Pretty classless

  20. Tony C. says:

Are all these sites just Giant sites? I am confused the only people who post are Giant fans.

  21. beth says:

you giants fans are really class acts, i’ll tell ya. that’s the second comment we’ve had from a giants fan making fun of the fact that only giants fans are commenting. are you stooping so low as to speculate about our website traffic in order to talk trash? on a post headlined “congratulations new york giants”?

  22. Andrew Farrar says:

I think you have to give the fellows a little latitude – they’re pumped up and hyped up and rightly so. Their team was written off by many ahead of the play-offs, including a good number of their own fans. It’s understandable that they’re venting a little of the enthusiasm.
And believe me, Dallas got a hell of a lot worse than what we’re enduring. And at least it’s livening up The Patriot Act a little – that’s got to be a good thing.

  23. Pickett says:

    BETH: Greetings from Brooklyn
Once you get over the taste of defeat you’ll probably show a lot more class than you are now. Of course Eli was the MVP. Not only did he outplay Brady but he engineered those 2 game winning drives. That’s what champions do (see, Brady, Tom). But your off-hand dismisssal of this fact saying Eli is a joke is the same disrepectful attitude that caused your team to underestimate our Side. “Pride cometh before a fall” we used to say. What the Nation saw was a total ass-whipping and as physical a defeat as ever inflicted upon a supposedly invincible team. I respect the Patriots as a great group of men. Why can’t you do the same for the Giants? All you do is lower yourself into pettiness when you lack the character to be gracious in defeat. Pitiful.

  24. Andrew Farrar says:

I don’t think they necessarily under-estimated the New York Giants. If anything, I’d say they over-estimated themselves.
And the Lesser Manning did a superb job, but I think there were more important players on the field of play for the Giants, especially on defence. But the MVP tends to go to an offensive player and generally the quarterback, so Manning’s hardly an unexpected pick.

  25. Evan Brunell says:

LT: Because I’m a Patriots fan, and we lost. So I’m going to call it a loss. Is that comprehensible enough for you?
I’m banning you from the Giants, Patriots and Cowboys suite. There is absolutely no call to refer to Owens’ genitalia like that.
There is no call to act the way you are acting.
    You should be ashamed.
Anyone else: You find him on any other MVN site, you tell me and he’ll be banned there.

  26. Boltar says:

That was such a great game. I must say that I dont think either team had their offenses up and running, who would have thought that the defense would be the key on both sides? Stay classy Pats writers, just ignore the morons and they will fade away. I must say that Belichick seems like a horrible guy. I understand that he is a good coach, but I hope the Pats get a new coach soon. Brady is pretty classy, and Moss has been classy as well. Still, there are a couple of guys on the team that really let success get to their heads. Toomer said, before/during the game, that the Pats defense was inviting him to their after party. Guys like Junior really need to get off the team, or your leadership really needs to rub off on the less skilled players. Good game again guys. Go Giants!

  27. FactCheck says:

Giants fan here… I’m not here to gloat (well, maybe a little) but I wanted to bring up a point: this game reminded me of the Broncos-Packers SB where the Packers were clearly the superior team but Holmgren was too stubborn to adjust the offense to counter what the Broncos were doing. Like that game, this one also has to be on the coach because BB thought he could just sling it 50 times and have the Gs sit back and take it. The Pats never really tried to establish the power running game, never used Faulk out of the backfield and never went for maximum protection. Hubris on the part of the head coach, plain and simple.

  28. albie470 says:

Guys: Giants fan living in Manhattan.I went to UMass so I have a lot of friends living in New England. I must say all my friends showed class. I got multiple text and voice messages offering congratulations. Thank you for that.
Words can’t describe how I am feeling. I have sat at my computer since 7:30am (fighting a massive hangover) just listening to the radio and reading articles on line. No work is getting done.
I am not gloating but I have to say….18-1? Oh man, that hurts. I was pissed when the Mets let the NL East go in September. You must be feeling 75 times worse. At least you have the Sox.

  29. beth says:

pickett: reading comprehension’s a great thing. i didn’t say eli himself was a joke. i said him winning the mvp over tuck was a joke. similarly, i think manny ramirez winning the WS MVP over keith foulke in 2004 was a joke, and even think tom brady winning the mvp in 2003′s SB was a joke. for the record, peyton manning winning the AFC Champ MVP last year was a joke, too. it’s a criticism of the award, not the players.

  30. RN Azriel says:

Class Act by the Pat’s fans….amzing to think most of you are also BoSux fans but save that for another converation :)
Amazing game – probably the best ever SB in terms of quality of game. I’m proud of my G-Men and their place in history, no better team they could have beat.
Hope to see the Pats again next year!!!

  31. Texas GIANT says:

beth, thanks for your last post commenting that you were criticizing (sp?) the award, not Eli. But, in Eli’s defense, he did drive the Gmen 83 yards with cool, calm, and collectiveness (ala Brady) for the game winning score. If Tuck (who is one of my favorite Giants) had sacked/forced a fumble in the previous Pats possesion, then we would definitley be talking about him winning the MVP.

  32. God Bless Texas says:

I don’t know if I would go as far as to say Belichick was classless last night. He had already gone to midfield and spoken w/ Coughlin. He even gave him a big embrace compared to what he normally does at midfield. I’d say he was just being typical Belichick. What’s the point of him staying on the field for one second if he already spoke w/ Coughlin? And I’m not even a Belichick fan…

  33. GUARD53 says:

i’m a giants fan living in mass. first i want to appoligize for lt56 being a complete a**hole. i know we shouldn’t be glouting , but the crap your “experts ” were saying about the giants were unbelievable . it was going to be a blowout — the giants seconrary is garbage, it was no contest !!!! thats why we enjoy hearing them crying now .

  34. beth says:

“our” experts? you mean those talking heads on the television who don’t represent or speak for us any more than they do for you, as a sports fan?
i don’t begrudge anyone being happy the giants won. i can’t say i’d feel or act any differently if the tables were turned. but it’d be nice if people could maybe step back and separate the team / coach and the fans. the personal attacks on patriots fans i’ve heard in the wake of this super bowl–hell, this whole season–have been completely uncalled for.
recognize that no matter what you think of the head coach, ownership or quarterback, we’re fans of our team just like you, and fans in similar ways for similar reasons. we’ve tried to be gracious about a heartbreaking loss in a public forum where it’s very easy to sling mud back at us anonymously, and in return we’ve gotten responses ranging from mocking our site traffic / commenters to racial epithets that have resulted in a banning from MVN. is this how “classy” new yorkers really want to be known? is this really how you’ve wanted to represent yourselves and your fellow giants fans after this victory?
people in glass houses should take their own “hard look at themselves” before waxing sanctimonious and insulting about “class” on a blog that’s trying to be gracious. stop taking your frustrations with the franchise we follow out on us.

  35. Eric Haskell says:

“People in glass houses should tak their own hard look at themselves.”
Make like a tree and get out of here.
Seriously, though, don’t judge all of us on one guy. He was being a jerk, but the truth is that we have heard nothing but how we didn’t have a chance these last two weeks.
Nobody should be taking it out on you, but you can’t blame a Giants fan for feeling disrespected.

  36. beth says:

i don’t blame giants fans for being disrespected; i blame the majority of the ones commenting on this blog for how they’re choosing to act on it today. as for lumping you in, if i wasn’t talking to you, i wasn’t talking to you. i don’t think i used the words “all giants fans”. why respond if it doesn’t apply?

  37. Just Saying says:

First time I have ever seen/heard a Pats fan
    behaving decently. Nice words,gentlemen.
I wish all New England fans were like you.

  38. LT#56 says:

    Evan, you can’t “ban” me.
I am smarter than you. But NFL season is over, so you get a break from me until September.
I’ll be back whenever I want.
    Screw you all cocksuckers.

  39. Jamie says:

I predicted a Pats victory but definitely not a blowout. I have nothing but respect for the Giants, and followed them as my NFC team all year. Still hasn’t made this loss feel any better, but no disrepect was given to the Giants in The Patriot Act.

  40. Pickett says:

    Dear Beth:
The reason I find your logic totally faulty is that if the Pats had won the game you would of course expect that Tom Brady would win the MVP for engineering the winning drive leading to the TD pass to Moss. Correct? So your double standard exposes you. It’s Eli who made it happen with 2 winning drives. I think what bugs you is that Eli outplayed Brady. This is not to take anything away from Brady or the Patriots – the final score could have easily been reversed but give Eli Manning his due rather than let your bitterness rule your mind. Peace be unto you. Go Yanks.

  41. NYC says:

    Beth,
Please don’t allow a select group of individuals to represent the whole, I’ve followed comments on all sites by some obnoxious fans like L.T. #56 who is obviously 12 years old and have been wondering when he would get banned from these blogs. As a lifetime Giants fan, I am a football fan first. I’m very happy about what we accomplished, however I still tip my hat to the Pats and their outstanding season, 18-1 is still 18-1 and although it loses some significance due to the timing, it was great to finally witness a SB where two teams left everything out on the field as opposed to a lopsided blowout. I will say this, I do feel for the first time ever Belicheck and his staff were outcoached simply because they didn’t make the proper adjustments at the right time. FOr the life of me I couldn’t understand what took him so long to change some of the WR’s patterns allowing Moss to run shorter in routes as opposed to only sticking with him on the deep ball. I understand you don’t want to shy away from what’s worked all season long, but the SB is about adjustments on the fly. And his ridiculous call to go for it on 4th and 11 against a defense that didnt even allow Brady to throw more than 8 yards is crazy. In that situation if you don’t trust your kicker to make that FG, you pin your opponent inside the 20 via a punt and allow your defense a chance to make a stop or force a TO. Also the all out blitz on Eli was too predictable, leaving 6’5 Plax in single coverage against 5’11 Hobbs proved to be very risky, in that scenario I would expect your best corner Samuels on our best receiver and have Hobbs cover Toomer or Smith. Bottom line we the Giants made the proper adjustments. And the reason Eli is MVP is not only because of the late drives he executed (though it plays a major role), but it was also due to his ability to make adjustments on the fly. Gilbride already stated publicly that Eli wasn’t even following the gameplan at one point (check the pass to Boss), he was instead following his instincts. To execute a 83 yard drive in under 3 min. against a top flight defense like the Pats is worthy of the MVP in my opinion. He and Montana are the only QB’s in SB history to orchestrate not one, but TWO forth quarter TD drives and win the game. Eli was unflappable when facing adversity as he has shown his entire career in the 4th. Say what you want about his struggles, I too have been critical but no one can deny his 4th quarter heroics throughout his career. His ability to close out games is exactly what you want in a franchise QB. Kudos to him and the entire Giants team for playing with such resiliency beating the #1, #2, and #3 offenses in the league while doing so on the road. Beating 4 division champions is no easy task.

  42. NYC says:

And Beth I appreciate and respect you responding to all posts regularly, unlike writers of other posts who hide behind their critiques, you have instead taken an honest, bold approach that I truly respect. It’s not easy to be on the losing side and still have a presence among such intense criticism. You are a class act. Much respect, even though I don’t agree with everything you say but hey, that’s what it’s all about, sharing opinions and learning from each other as football fans.

  43. 18-1 says:

“Waah… if I wasn’t talking to you on this PUBLIC blog, why are you responding? Waaah”
Oh… here’s a clue: if you don’t want responses from the public, DON’T POST THERE. I didn’t see any salutations to indicate a directed letter. You aren’t on any more of a pulpit than the rest of us.

  44. HopLax08 says:

Beth + Jamie – i appreciate how u 2 have taken the “high road” here, respect u for that. and i must say, beth u have moxy (that’s a compliment) i suspect u would be fun talking football over a beer. for the record, i have found the dallas fans to be the MOST obnoxious (ie “God Bless Texas”, who strangly enough no longer graces us with his presence on the Giants blog…hmmm, wonder why?). btw, i am hoping to be up in foxboro in May playing in the lax final four. should be fun.

  45. Brent says:

I have been traveling in Ireland since the game and everyone has commented about the Super Bowl.
The game was one for the histroy books what a game to the very end!
The Giants D-line manhandled the Patriots and played like that for the entire 60 minutes. That was the missing peice from the last game of the season.
    Good win by the GMen.

  46. Pickett says:

That’s it L.T. #56. You’ve gone too far. No room for racism – this is 2008. You are disgusting. A pox on you.

  47. Jamie says:

Absolutely ridiculous. Somebody needs to delete his jackass from this messageboard.

  48. beth says:

pickett, you’re the one making it about bitterness. i feel, having watched the game, that the giants defense was more crucial to the win than eli. this isn’t to say that eli was unimportant–but i’ve already clarified that and you seem determined to twist my words around, so, whatever.
“18-1″ you’re just nuts. unless you’re eric haskell posting under another name, i wasn’t even talking to you ABOUT not talking to you. geez.
NYC, and hoplax, i appreciate your encouragement. i understand that not *all* giants fans are like this and if it came across that i think so, i didn’t word things well enough.

  49. Andrew Farrar says:

It would’ve been a sick joke if Brady had picked up the MVP.

  50. Pickett says:

Ah, Beth, we just can’t seem to communicate here. Please review Eli’s 4th quarter statistics. Let’s say New England had been trailing all night like the Giants were, and Tom drove the Pats to two 4th quarter TD’s, especially one being the game winner with 39 seconds left, of course Tom would be the MVP. Why can’t you say the same for Eli Manning? As for New York Giant fans, we are not animals despite that racist LT#56. I’m a nice guy and I have friends all over New England – Mass., New Hampshire, even Maine. So please don’t paint me with that wide brush.

  51. Andrew Farrar says:

Genuine question: has a defensive player ever been the MVP?
Let’s face facts, it goes, more often than not, to the winning quarterback.
I thought the Lesser Manning had a very good game, but he wasn’t the best Giant on show, was he?
The offence he directed scored a mere 17 points, which was good enough to win because the New York defence kept the potent New England offence at bay.
It would’ve been a bit of a struggle to name a credible MVP had New York not scored on that final drive – none of the New England players would really have deserved it, so, I guess be default, it would’ve gone to Tom Brady because he’s the quarterback.

  52. Evan Brunell says:

    Pickett:
I give Eli a lot of credit, but Eli didn’t throw the Patriots offense off its game — the defense did. If the defense played average, the score would have been 35-17, not 17-14.
Eli deserves a lot of credit, but I think, and I guess Beth agrees, the defense deserves way more. There’s no way ANY team could possibly have overcome that defense.

  53. Kevros says:

Evan – It’s Most Valuable Player, not Most Valuable Part of the Team. Obviously the 11 guys on defense are more valuable than Eli alone and even all 11 guys on offense. But if Eli hadn’t ripped himself away from teh Pats D-line or threaded the needle to Tyree for the 1st TD, we wouldn’t have won the game. There is still a decent chance that without Tuck doing what he did and putting Fred Robbin/ Barry Cofield in his spot, the Giants could win. I love Tuck but the dept at D-line is gargantuan compared to having Anthony Wright come in and lead the offense.
Therefore, Eli Manning IS the MVP of Super 42, like it or not!

  54. NOOLIE says:

Great game by both sides. Most of the Pats, Brady, Moss even Harrison showed a lot of class giving credit to how the Giants played. As for Belichick, he greeted Coughlin and hugged him so leaving the field doesn’t bother me. If he had just walked off then I’d say he showed no class.
As for the writers on this blog, you all are great fans and have shown class by responding after the game. Can’t say the same about the writers for the Cowboys on MVN. Particularly Brian Smith who sidestepped any criticism and just kept writing about who’d be the next team to knock off the Giants because the Cowboys failed to do it.
As for LT#56, that person’s obviously an ignorant ass. Unfortunately people like him give other fans of their teams a bad name. And responding to him only makes him write more stupidity. After this we should all ignore him then he won’t have anything else to say.
Great season and maybe we can all have a rematch next year. Go Giants.

  55. Pickett says:

Final word on this subject (this has been a very fine discussion, indeed, even if we Giant fans are guests on this site – sorry if we overstayed our welcome). Regardless of what the Giants defense did to determine the final outcome, Eli drove the team the length of the field, with the clock ticking away, under pressure, in the face of a desperate Patriot’s defense, and threw the winning TD. That is a what a championship quarterback should do (see: Brady, Tom). Ergo, Eli is the MVP. Sorry, Beth and Evan. Despite all, the QB position is still what it is all about in Pro Football. Thank you. Goodnight and good luck. See you in the funny papers.

  56. mikeNYG516NY says:

haha beth ELI won the mvp not a joke…..haha
feels good been wearing number tens jersey since the day we got him !

  57. mikeNYG516NY says:

and Belichick is classless he always has been since going to the patriots and he doesnt even have the decency to go and shake manginis hand like a man and i cant stand the jets but still it goes to show that he truly puts a bad name 2 the patriots franchise…..and eli played a good football game BETH stop hating on him i kno its tough to swallow this loss but you will have to deal with the number 1 on the right side of the 18

  58. Michael says:

To all who acknowledge that the Giants played great and won, Thank you. As a Giant fan I have watched and prayed through 3 Superbowls and watched them win 2. One by a last minute field goal miss and one by a last minute touchdown. Take solice in the fact that you have a team that won so many so easily in a short period of time. The Patriots are and will continue to be a GREAT team. The Giants won becuase they played their hearts out. Let’s all just give the teams the respect they deserve and stop being petty about the Boston NY rivalry.

  59. Michelle says:

    Beth: you are an idiot.
