All things being equal, most writers and fans figured Moss would sign with the Patriots after both the Patriots and Moss became quiet on the subject.
In trying to put a deal together that should be cap friendly and keep Moss super happy, they let Asante Samuel go without a proper contract negotiation. Now Samuel will soar with the Eagles.
The Patriots did not give Donte’ Stallworth his contract extension and also cut Rosevelt Colvin and Kyle Brady saving huge numbers against the salary cap. Colvin will end up somewhere else for less money, but again it does not appear the Patriots tried to re-work the contract.
Moss will be good for the Patriots and help bring up young receiver Chad ‘who?’ Jackson into the top receiver we all expected when the Pats moved up to grab him early in teh second round of the draft.
Jackson could turn into a Moss/Stallworth type of player as he has speed and can catch the ball. It seems his attitude has kept him on the sidelines. Yes I know – I said Moss could help fix that…
If the Patriots create all this cap space and do not sign Moss, then they have lost the chance to keep a few good players that know their system and not have many good players to choose from in free agency. But then maybe they give Vince Wilfork a huge extension…
Any one else thinks this could turn into a mess like Deion Branch?

What happened to the “In Bill we trust” tagline? Not losing faith are you, young fellow?
Great post – I’m worried about losing Moss, too.
However, I have to disagree that the Branch situation was a mess. In my opinion, the Branch situation turned out as good as it possibly could. First of all, we got a 1st round pick for an above-average receiver with no height advantage whatsoever. That one draft pick got turned into this years’ 7th overall pick and Randy Moss (and 23 touchdowns). Can you complain with that?
Also, I’m sure there was proper contract negotiation with Samuel, but he felt his per-year number was around $10 million while the Pats obviously disagreed. Sometimes, there’s nothing you can do (without setting the entire franchise back by a significant factor) to prevent losing a key player.
Brady will probably restructure (he wants wins not money), Moss signs (he wants Super Bowl and Hall of Fame). Then New England should trade up to 3rd in the draft and take Gholston. Thus creating the best front 7 in the NFL, 3 1st round young lineman and a penetrating linebacker corps. Gholston could easily be the next Merriman. If the Pats do not trade up then he will probably fall to the Jets (I do not want him after Brady twice a year). The Falcons would trade down to 7th with the option of either McFadden or Matt Ryan still being on the board.
Brady officially the greatest QB of all time. Give him a game in the UK.
I say, another British fellow joins our happy band – perhaps his views will be more to beth’s liking and prove that not all the British are numpties.
I imagine the Pats front office will iron out the Moss contract in the end. This whole hush-hush situation is just a house of mirrors to keep the other teams off balance.
I agree that trading up for Gholston is a prime idea.
I also think that letting Samuel walk was a great move. The Patriots have always let primadonnas know that their personal value should never get in the way of a global team concept ! That’s why Branch walked, too.
My only doubt: Stallworth should have been retained.
My thoughts on Spygate: we’ve seen the last of it. I think that if Specter drags this thing on, he could wind up being seen as a crooked politician trying to beef up his own financial interests. (see his relationship with Comcast)
My thought on Belichick: a tactical genius….a lowlife of a human being…..outside of football he probably couldn’t manage changing toilet paper on a roll without getting it pissed off.
BTW: I am the ONLY Patriots fan living in Italy. It’s true. The Italians understand football as much as Americans understand cricket. I was born in beantown and spent most of my youth at Boston sport venues cheering on our teams whether they be on top or on the bottom of the pile.
