Media – Patriots top draft pick is

There are many mock drafts and before we start to go down that route (oops, too late) it is interesting to see what the local and national media are selecting for the Patriots with the seventh pick in the 2008 NFL Draft.
As we look at the local media the Boston Globe’s Mike Reiss was on ESPN to give his selection. Mike did a breakdown on needs between linebacker and cornerback and selected cornerback as the greater need.
Reiss chose Kansas CB Aqib Talib, but also considered Troy’s CB Leodis McKelvin and USC’s LB Keith Rivers. These are all good picks if the Pats were to go on a needs basis. Reiss did comment on the opportunity to move down, but with most mock drafts was not allowed to trade away the draft pick.
Sticking with ESPN, Mel Kiper reviews the Secondary and Linebackers in the 2008 draft.
The NFL Network has their own mock draft picks and MarshalL Faulk comments on why the Patriots will choose a cornerback. Mike Mayock and Charles Davis (who??) making their selections for 2008… oh boy.
Speaking of the NFL Network, I have complained many times about how bad Bryant Gumbel and Chris Collingsworth are at calling games, but I also thin Jim Mora has no reason to be doing any analysis or commenting on NFL Total Access. While covering the Buffalo Bills at Circling the Wagons, Dan Goldman believes Marshall Faulk is the worst NFL analyst on television.
Over at Sports Illustrated, Don Banks recent mock draft has the Patriots choosing CB Leodis McKelvin. Good choice the same one that I originally went with when thinking about the Patriots needs.
However, if the Patriots are not able to move out from the No. 7 pick, I think overall we really need to look at value over need and the Patriots will not give top ten money to a defensive back. The driver behind the Patriots defense is the front seven and if Sedrick Ellis or Glen Dorsey is free – they take him.
Typically if there are no defensive lineman, the Patriots would take an offensive lineman to win in the trenches – this is where offensive tackle Ryan Clady, from Boise State, may be selected.
If McFadden drops to 7 and the Pats still have to pick then they will take him.
Otherwise I think if they go for need it will be a defensive end / linebacker type but since Gholston will not be there, they would go with Derrick Harvey over OLB Rivers.
But hey, no one knows what the Patriots will do – they surprise us every year!
IN BILL WE TRUST!!

If the pats take talib at 7, they don’t know what they’re doing…he’s an athlete with no discernible skill who played for a mediocre program.
also, if mcfadden drops to 7, the pats will trade down because there are a lot of teams out there that need an RB more than the pats and would be drooling at mcfadden falling. kind of like brady quinn last year, but to a smaller degree.

I am not so sure McFadden is as good as Adrian Peterson (Vikings) to have many teams jumping up to get him.
With the Falcons signing Michael Turner and the Jets bolstering their O-Line the hypothetical teams in front of the Pats for McFadden are Miami, St Louis or Oakland (even though they have Vargas)..
So he could easily fall to us and we may be able to trade out of the spot.

  3. Jamie says:

    Matt,
I agree with your assessment of Talib. I’m no pro scout but while watching the Combine even I could see that he looked awkward in drills and had no fluid movement at all. Personally, I think that Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is the best corner in the draft, but that’s a topic for another post… :o )

  4. Mike says:

The Cowboys would probably trade up for Mcfadden if he was still on the board at number 7, so i see the pats making a deal with them for one of their 2 draft picks in the middle of the round at 22 or 29.

  5. Brent says:

Would we take former first-rounder Bobby Carpenter, the 22nd pick and a third round pick?
Not sure what BB thinks of Carpenter, but Parcells loved him. Wade does not know what to do with him in Dallas.
Any trade should for Carpenter should also have a renegotiated contract as he is under a first round contract.

  6. Jamie says:

    Brent,
Although I wouldn’t mind receiving Carpenter in a trade package, including just a 3rd with Bobby would be poor value for the #7 pick. Going by the draft value chart, I believe Dallas would have to include its 4th along with its 2 firsts in order to trade for the #7 pick. While that is unrealistic, getting at least the 2 firsts, or Carpenter, the 22nd, and maybe a 3rd or 4th, would be better value.

  7. Brent says:

    Jamie,
I never mentioned Carpenter being worth 2 first round picks – he has barely started in Dallas.
But as i stated and you agree – if BB likes Carpenter well enough – he may be interested to have Bobby, the 22nd pick and a 3rd or 4th rounder for the Pats 7th pick.

  8. Kevros says:

Brent, watch this video and tell me you still think Bill is going to pick McKelvin. He’s not a BB guys at all…

  9. Brent says:

Hi Kevros, my original pick for the Pats was similar to Mike Reiss McKelvin or Talib at CB or Rivers as OLB.
If Ellis or Gholston is there – I think the Pats will choose one of them.
As I mentioned in this article: I think overall we really need to look at value over need and the Patriots will not give top ten money to a defensive back. The driver behind the Patriots defense is the front seven and if Sedrick Ellis or Glen Dorsey is free – they take him…
I am still learning more about the college guys and in the end hope the Patriots trade the 7th pick away… to get a top DE/OLB or ILB and at least 2 or 3 CB in lower rounds as this is a deep draft for CB.
The Pats will definitely sign a OL and DT in the draft even though they are young and have most (not Wilfork) guys under contract for a little longer.
