As much as I wish I had time to follow the Patriots the last few weeks it has become harder and harder to find infomation that is really new or relevant to what the patriots may do come draft day.
Speculation on the Pats moving up or down in the draft is just that – speculation. Who will they choose at number 7? We don’t know who is left on the board at that time and who the Patriots feel is worthy choosing that pick and paying that big price tag.
Dean Pees Josh McDaniels, Dom Capers and all the scouts are chatting away at who they want, while Bill and Scott are taking notes and watching South Park reruns…
Every year it would be interesting to be the fly on the wall while the Patriots talk draft – this year even more so as after the 7th pick there is a long long time until they get to pick again and they will lose out on quite a few valuable players.
Much like (ahem) the Jets did last year, I would like to see the Pats move up the boards and get rid of the late round picks.
The Patriots kept a lot of their low level picks in 2007 and no one is still left with the team. So why bother in 2008?
I would also like to see the Pats ‘miss’ the 7th pick and actually use it at about number 10 or 11 ‘when ‘ they are ready and choose Keith Rivers. They would not lose the pick and can grab anyone later in the round and not have to pay number 7 money when they chose to without penalty.
Or did I misinterpret the rules?
IN BILL WE TRUST!

The pats will leap frog the Jets and make a trade with KC. Then they will take D-Mac
If Darren McFadden falls to the Pats somehow at #7, I wouldn’t be surprised if they picked him. I wouldn’t agree with the pick, but it wouldn’t surprise me. I think it’s highly unlikely though that they will trade up for McFadden. If they were to trade up it would be for Gholston or Chris Long.

The Patriots do not need McFadden so why trade up to get him?
I also do not believe Chris Long is all that and if he fell to the Pats they would take him but not trade up for him.
Only Gholston is the one I believe the Pats would trade up to get.
New England is going to draft defense will this pick. Whether it’s Golston or a top notch corner, or even Rivers or another outside linebacker, the Pats know the importance of defense and won’t pass up this rare chance to nab a big time athlete on that side of the ball.

Brent,
I have to disagree with you about Chris Long. I think he is a better prospect than Gholston because of his character, drive, and of course talent. Gholston came on strong towards the end of the season but his consistent effort has been called into question, whereas Long has the never-ending motor. They equaled each other in sacks (14) for the season, only Long consistently made plays whereas again Gholston turned it on at the end. Total athleticism goes to Gholston hands-down, but as we all know, football is about more than that. Also don’t discount the Belichick-Al Groh connection.
No need for the Pats to leap frog the Jets – althought the Jets were well equipped at that position as evidenced in 2006, Mangini is having enough trouble keeping his players financially happy so he would not want to pay $500k for a rookie.
pats will leap frog the jets and draft a new camera guy in the first round
