Moss-less offense sputters

WR Randy Moss was not present at camp today, and couple that with Wes Welker remaining on the PUP list, the offense’s execution suffered. By all accounts, the offense just couldn’t seem to put anything together, be it due to good defensive execution or miscommunication/confusion among the wide receivers. At one point, Brady put his arms up in the air in disgust with the what was transpiring.
The defense also owned the day in pass rushing, be it through match-ups along the offensive/defensive lines or linebacker-on-running back drills. With T Nick Kaczur back on the field but T Matt Light out, the line still has not had the cohesion it had last season (minus the Super Bowl). With Light out, Kaczur lined up at left tackle while T Ryan O’Callaghan lined up at right tackle. Again, rookie LB Jerod Mayo looked impressive, both in coverage in 11-on-11 drills and in pass rushing drills against the running backs. The Pats seem to really have struck gold selecting Mayo. His strength, speed, and overall athleticism is clearly on display, and he seems to be covering his assignments. This kid really has potential to be the next great Patriots linebacker.
One last quick note. TE David Thomas, who hasn’t played a full regular season due to injuries since being drafted, had to leave the field and did not return. He left on his own power but was accompanied by trainers. Hopefully this is not anything serious, as Thomas showed flashes of ability when he has played.

Is the clock ticking for Chad Jackson and a few others?

With the first few days of training camp behind us, the biggest disappointment seems to be the play of wide receiver Chad Jackson.
Not only has Jackson not executing his routes and dropping balls from Tom Brady, he has also had a few balls knocked out of his hands, and missed balls on punt

Seymour back at camp

Pro Bowl DE Richard Seymour was back at practice today after missing the last two sessions. The good news is that he didn’t miss time due to injury, but is simply taking things slowly in order to stay fresh during the regular season. Seymour commented on his absence:

Pats bring in Jordan

One day after being released by the Raiders, Mike Reiss from the Boston Globe is reporting that the Patriots are hosting RB LaMont Jordan for a free agent visit. JOrdan played 4 seasons with the Jets and spent the last 3 in Oakland, where he was a starter. In 2005, his first as a starter, he ran for 1,025 yards and scored 9 rushing touchdowns. Since then, injuries and the improved play of Justin Fargas have slowed down LaMont, leading to his release.
With six running backs already on the roster, I would suspect that Jordan was brought in on just an evaluation basis just in case the injury bug hits the position in camp or during the season. Of course, there is always the possibility that the Pats are actively trying to sign him now to improve the depth at the position. We’ll have to wait and see if he shows up to the afternoon session of camp today.
***UPDATE*** The Patriots have officially signed RB LaMont Jordan. You can view the pree release here.
Quick Note: DE Richard Seymour was back at practice this morning. It appears as though he is being limited in camp to keep him fresh throughout the season, much like how Brady is being handled. He did not appear to have any signs of an injury at practice.
More to come on today’s training camp sessions later tonight…

Should the Patriots be concerned about their QB situation?

In the AFC East, more then one team has a question regarding their quarterback situation.
The Patriots are the only team with a true and valuable starting QB on their roster -Tom Brady. Behind Brady there are more questions then answers with three untested youngsters in Matt Cassel, Matt Gutierrez and rookie Kevin O’Connell.
The Patriots have had four QBs (ahem – Tom Brady) taking up roster spots in the past, it does not seem likely that 2008 will be the same case. The Patriots will definitely will keep at least one of the backup QBs, but is there a need to keep all of them? Two out of three?
Matt Cassel is in the last year of his rookie contract and has not done enough in college or the NFL to consider him as a potential starter or a true backup which a team would be interested to pursue a trade.
Gutierrez had more playing time then Cassel in 2007 (and also had more time starting in college), so in the current food chain – Gutierrez may be the Matt to remain in the QB rotation or could move to the practice squad depending on the any restrictions for time played or activated for games.
Rookie O’Connell was chosen in the third round and has been highlighted on a few message boards as the future replacement for Tom Brady or at least the first real attempt to find a replacement. So he is a keeper and will not last long enough to be moved to the practice squad. O’Connell was a four year starter (and first year rookie captain) at San Diego State and is probably the

First day of camp full of PUP's

The New England Patriots first day of training camp was met by a rain and a lengthy list of players physically unable to perform (PUP’s). Unfortunately for fans, practice was closed to the fans due to the rain, and camp was held inside the Dana Farber Field House practice bubble. One of the most notable things to come out of training camp was the unusually large amount of players on the Active Physically Unable to Perform list, which topped out at 12. Being on the Active PUP list does mean that players can practice as soon as the training staff and doctors feel they are ready to practice, whereas being on the Reserve PUP list would mean the player would have to sit out the first 6 weeks. A few players not on the list also missed some practice time. TE Ben Watson missed the morning session but was there in the afternoon, while Richard Seymour and TE Marcus Pollard were present in the morning but absent in the afternoon.

The PUP list included “cornerback Ellis Hobbs (labrum, groin), safety Rodney Harrison, linebackers Mike Vrabel and Bo Ruud, wide receiver Wes Welker, guard Stephen Neal (shoulder, knee), defensive linemen Mike Wright (foot) and Jarvis Green (shoulder), tackles Nick Kaczur and Oliver Ross (triceps), center Ryan Wendell and running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis.” Any one of these players could return to the field tomorrow or we may not see them until Week 7 (or never this season). Hobbs, Welker, and Neal were no surprise as they had off-season surgery and had not participated in the mini-camps earlier this year. Nick Kaczur can return at any time, but his problem is more of the legal issue than a physical one. The two major surprises were Vrabel and Harrison. Hopefully they will not be out for any significant amount of time, as they are an integral part to the Pats’ defense.
With Hobbs on the PUP list and last year’s other starting corner, Asante Samuel, bolting for money in Philly, free agent signings Jason Webster and Fernando Bryant lined up as the starting corners. It’s way too early to pencil them in as starters for Week 1, but they fared well on Day 1 of camp. Webster, an under-the-radar signing, was listed on patriots.com as “Who’s Hot” for the morning session of practice.
