Tank offline for the season

The Patriots’ newest and most interesting free agent acquisition, S/LB Tank Williams was put on IR today after injuring his knee in Thursday’s preseason opener. Tank injured his knee on a special teams play, retreated to the locker room, and did not return. This move ends what was one of the more interesting stories of training camp: Tank’s position flexibility, playing both linebacker and safety. This could mean that Rodney Harrison will re-assume that role, which was something he did at times last season, most notably against the Colts.
As an answer to the growing wounded in the secondary, the Pats’ signed CB Jeff Shoate. Shoate has played 4 NFL seasons, all with the Denver Broncos. He has 11 total tackles for his career (8 of which came last season), no sacks, and no interceptions. Corner backs Ellis Hobbs, Jonathan Wilhite, Jason Webster, and Mike Richardson all did not play in Thursday night’s game. I don’t expect Shoate to make it out of camp and into the regular season, as he is probably just serving as a piece of gum trying to block up the leaking

why does this always seem to happen to big Pats acquisitions? Benjamin Watson, Rosie Colvin…we get them and it’s big news, and by the time everyone shows up for training camp the next year, we’re going, “oh yeah, we still have that guy…”

Tank’s deal was just for one season, so it will be interesting to see if the Pats (and Tank) want to move forward next season and continue the hybrid linebacker/safety experiment.

Was it really worth saving fifteen million dollars not signing ty law. Ask yourself as a pats fan. does denver beat us in 2005 if he’s our db or in 2006 against the colts when that pathetic make shift secondary gave up a 20 point lead. how many times do we have to see a pass sail over hobb’s head in the end zone for a game winning touchdown. We would be celebrating a perfect season because law does not drop that pass on the sideline, he runs it back for a touchdown. yes he is older but he’s better than anyone in that secondary now. it is by far the worst secondary in the league. and if the d line does not get enough pressure, it will be ugly. we need ty law. we needed him last year, the year before and the year before that. the one common denomenator in this, no superbowl titles. and if we do not sign him there will not be one this year . not with that secondary of misfits. exculding mr harrison of course.
