Brady could miss rest of season

According to the sources of Michael Silver at Yahoo! Sports, QB Tom Brady suffered an ACL tear in his left knee in today’s regular season opener, meaning that he will be out for the rest of the season. NBC/SI’s Peter King said something similar during NBC’s Pregame show Sunday night, mentioning that his sources stated that Brady’s injury is “season threatening.” All this adds up to bad news for the New England Patriots and their fans. If Brady is out for the rest of the season, all of the Super Bowl aspirations are pretty much null and void. Don’t get me wrong, this is still a good team and could vie for the AFC East crown and a playoff berth, but I highly doubt a Matt Cassel led team can make it back to the Super Bowl. Sure, Cassel played well today, but mind you it was against the Kansas City Chiefs, who will probably be picking in the top 5 in the draft again this year.
Bill Belichick and the Patriots organization has yet to release anything official and have stated that an MRI will take place tomorrow. However, I’m sure with the medical staff the Pats have, they have an idea what the injury is. This also means that we could possibly be seeing a few roster moves this week. We know that room has to be made for Kevin Faulk, who will be returning from his one-game suspension. If Brady will be out for the rest of the year, or even an extended period of time, then another QB will likely have to be added to the roster. The two names to watch will be Matt Gutierrez, who was cut at the end of the summer and has knowledge of the system. He has yet to land anywhere since his release. Another option would be Chris Simms, who is still a free agent. If Simms is signed, it will likely be a few weeks before we see him take the field because he has to learn the system. So unless Brady miraculously returns next week, we are stuck with Matt Cassel for the time being. Let’s hope he’s up to the challenge.
Go Pats!

if brady is gone for the rest of this year, we will be seeing a true test of whether it’s belichick’s system or player talent that have made the patriots what they are.

I AM SO SAD I NEARLY CRIED. ONE WORD KARMA – SERVES YOU CHEATING BASTARDS RIGHT. The so called greatest team to ever live – Shove it up your ass.

  3. MOB says:

Hard working Gutierrez nows the system well as Bill Belichick said in his pass interviews. He did well in preseason. So why not bring him back as a back up to Casell? I hope Brady has a fast recovery. My prayers for Tom Brady, the team and for the organization. And to Mike(last responser)…my prayers are with you too cause your bad wishes will come back to you.

  4. Jamie says:

Yeah that was pretty harsh Mike. I’m not the biggest Peyton Manning fan, but it wouldn’t be the same playing the Colts without him in the line-up. We’ll see what happens. The Pats have a legit reason to play the respect card now as they’re no longer favored to win the division according to most sports pundits.

  5. Don’t say a thing about karma, that’s a joke. Because his coach made a bad decision, Brady deserves to lose a year and maybe derail a hall of fame career?? Meanwhile PacMan Jones, Chris Henry and Marvin Harrison are criminals and are walking fine. Nice.
The Pats will more than likely still win the division. If they bring in the likes of Chris Simms, Tim Rattay or if they just give Cassel the shot, they will have a bonafide game manager who can win them some ball games and help them limp to a 10-6 record.

  6. Beth says:

yes, matt, i was beginning to wonder how being drafted by the patriots years ago makes brady ‘deserve’ this injury, but even standing back from that – even if somehow, karmically, cosmically, he/ we DID ‘deserve’ this – THINGS DON’T WORK THAT WAY. you know. over here in reality, where people live.
fact of the matter is brady was overdue for an injury. it was a fluke play. it happens. GOD IS NOT SMITING BILL BELICHICK. sorry, haters.

  7. pat. T says:

Ok Matt i don’t see how marvin Harrison’s a criminal? It was his gun in the so called shooting, but he didn’t do it? So how does that make him a criminal? And we’ll find out if the Pats can still win the division this next week against the Jets.. But i think Cassel should be the starter because by the time a guy like Chris Simms or Daunte Culpepper fully get acclamated to the playbook it’ll probably be week 5 or 6.. So i say stick with Cassel & maybe sign a veteran or take a shot on a guy who knows your system like Matt Gutierrez..

  8. Colin says:

    One word Mike…Xanax. Take it.

  9. MOB says:

To Mike & Matt Soteroff, Tom Brady has done nothing but work hard to be the great player that he is. Never got in to trouble or caused trouble. He is the face of NFL a great athlete and leader for kids to follow. No matter how good or bad or dirty a player can be…no one deserves to get hurt. don’t take anything away from his success. He deserves all the praise he gets and he will be in the Hall of fame. Grow up!

  10. Chris says:

    MOB,
I don’t remember my parents telling me when I was growing up to date a woman for 3 years, get her pregnant, and then leave her for a supermodel during her pregnancy. But I see how kids can look up to that in todays society. WELL SAID indeed.

  11. Brent says:

Chris – we do not know the exact situation between Brady and Monihan on how they left things before or after she was pregnant.
I would point out Larry Bird as the worse offender having left his daughter (knowingly) and not wanting to be involved in her life at all – even when she went on to become a great basketball player in her won right.
Sports players are role models because society says they are, however, most kids look up to one parent, relative, guardian or teacher/coach as someone that had a positive influence on how their life really turned out.
Just because a kid likes P Diddy doesn’t mean he will turn out like him. But he can buy his gear…

  12. Chris says:

Well he left DURING her pregnancy for one. Secondly I understand just because he is Tom Brady doesn’t mean his fans would turn out like him….although the NFL would like that. I thought Travis Henry and Shawn Kemp were pretty good, that doesn’t mean I am going to have 8 or 9 children with 8 or 9 different women, respectively. Those two athletes are probably the two worst offenders. And society says everyone is a role model, not just sports players. From athletes to doctors to a plumber.
It is unfortunate he hurt his knee, but don’t hype him up (as MOB did) to be more than he is. There are flaws in almost every sentence he wrote, this is why I made a comment. It sounded as if it came from the mouth of Tom’s fan club president. Post with good judgment Brent! I took the liberty to add what MOB forgot to write in his haste….
‘Tom Brady has done nothing but work hard (The NFL reached a deal with Walsh on April 23, 2008 and arranged a meeting between Goodell and Walsh. Prior to the meeting, Walsh sent eight videotapes containing opponents’ coaches’ signals from the 2000 through 2002 seasons) to be the great player that he is. Never got in to trouble or caused trouble (refer to above brackets, do you really believe he had no clue, he is Tom Brady the starting QB). He is the face of NFL (is this singular? THE FACE? I wonder what Peyton and LT have to say about that) a great athlete (he does have a great arm, I will give you that) and leader for kids to follow (Bridget Moynahan – Sorry Brent I had to). No matter how good or bad or dirty a player can be

  13. MOB says:

Chris, Are you so perfect? Nobody is perfect. People do make mistakes but why bring in their personal lives? Is it a crime to break up with somebody (with child or no child)? I believe he is providing for his kid’s future. When I wrote (someone to look up to) I meant there is no talk of drugs, alcohol, rape or guns associated with his name (positive influence). I am also talking about his football accomplishments. I just don’t understand why people like you like to drag everybody down. I am a football fan. I do like the Patriots, Tom Brady, Matt Gutierrez and other players from other team. I will praise other teams when they make a great play. I am a fan….. not a fanatic.
    (Thanks Brent )

  14. Brent says:

Chris I am not going to research the exact times of the Bridget Moynahan story, now although there may be details otherwise, I do not specifically have them, but they had split up and Brady was already w Gisele when the announcement of Moynahan’s pregnancy ‘offically’ broke.
Brady would not be the first sports player or star to go through this in public. These things also happen in everyday life, so who is to say.
But overall Brady’s image has been a clean cut single NFL player (one of many). Peyton Manning’s is the clean cut, quirky commercial ads guy with a great wife and family guy (one of many).
Both have done well on the field and the press have deemed them The Face (or at least according to Steve Marriuci of the NFL Network it is only Brady?).
We as Patriots fans obviously we see Brady as our ‘Face and Franchise’ and he has historically, statistically and professionally done well for the New England Patriots franchise and Patriot Nation.
