Vince Wilfork fined, not suspended
The future of nose tackle Vince Wilfork has been a hot topic around New England the past few days after it was reported that he was meeting with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell over an elbow to the helmet of Denver QB Jay Cutler two weeks ago.
On Tuesday, Wilfork and Goodell met to discuss the incident and a possible suspension and/or fine for the hit. They also reviewed film of other controversial plays Wilfork took part in, including the low hit last year on JP Losman and the finger poke into the helmet of Brandon Jacobs. Wilfork described the conversation as “productive” and that he would have to tone down his play after the whistle, but that he was fine “in between the whistles.”
With win over Rams, Patriots keep chipping away
…at their offensive miscues, at their defensive personnel issues, at the standings in the AFC East, and at the idea that this is a lost season for the team without their star quarterback.
The offensive line was the biggest concern for this team even with
their blowout win over the Broncos on Monday night, but from what I saw
today, they made leaps and bounds of improvement in the short week
since. I was especially watching the right tackle, Mark LeVoir, who’d
had a spectacularly bad time during last week’s six-sack extravaganza.
This time, I watched as he worked with right guard Billy Yates to keep
the right side of the pocket as strong as the left has been.

Pats win 23-16, tied with the Bills for 1st in the East
It took all four quarters for the Patriots to squeak out a victory against the Rams, scoring the go-ahead touchdown late in the 4th quarter. Matt Cassel threw for his highest amount of passing yardage so far this season (267), but also threw 2 INTs and 1 TD. Kevin Faulk led the ground game with 60 yards on 13 carries, with BenJarvus Green-Ellis rushing 9 times for 16 yards and 1 TD. Kevin Faulk also had 4 catches for 47 yards and a the go-ahead TD.
Pats leading Rams 13-10 at halftime
In what has been a back-and-forth game, the Patriots are leading the Rams 13-10 at the half. The Pats got their final 3 points of the half with a Gostkowski field goal with 1 second left on the clock. The Pats were in position to score a touchdown, but Randy Moss had the would-be TD knocked out of his hands by Jason Craft. Matt Cassel has been efficient and look slike he’s carrying the momentum from last week, going 12/17 for 147 yards. BenJarvus Green-Ellis scored the Pats’ only touchdown on their first offensive drive. Deltha O’Neal was injured (head) in the first quarter and has yet to return to the game. Right now, the outside corners are Mike Richardson and Ellis Hobbs, so the Pats are vulnerable in the secondary (more than usual). Here’s the defensive score, according to Dean Pees’ scorecard:
Pats/Rams coverage
Stay tuned to the Patriot Act today during the Patriots/Rams game today for analysis and game reaction during halftime and at the end of the game. It should be a great a game for teams that have momentum on their side after impressive wins last week. If the Patriots’ defense can play as well as it did last week, the Pats should be able to squeak out a victory over the Rams.
Final Score Prediction: Pats 24, Rams 13
Go Pats!
Tom Brady knee news is not good
…progressing to awful:
After published reports said Brady needed two more operations to clean out an infection in his knee, ESPN.com, citing a source it did not identify, reported that “the Patriots, as an organization, are upset with the situation because they were clear that they wanted Brady’s surgery done under the direction of doctors of their choosing in Boston.”
Later Thursday, the Patriots issued a statement affirming their support for the quarterback…
…with the potential for OH MY GOD.

Sackapalooza: Patriots take messy slugfest from Broncos on Monday Night Football
I’d rather be lucky than good any day.
Or so the saying goes.
Yesterday there were a number of places where that was an expression befitting the Patriots. First among them the fact that Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler injured his index finger on his throwing hand on his very first pass attempt of the game and wasn’t the same after that. From the very beginning of the game, this neutralized what had been an intimidating matchup of a deep thrower against a Patriots secondary that had not exactly showered itself in glory against the Chargers.
Pats buck the Broncos
The New England Patriots did exactly what they needed to do tonight, and that was to win and win convincingly. Both the offense and the defense were firing on all cylinders, and the final score was an impressive 41-7. Despite being sacked 6 times, Matt Cassel turned in a good showing, going 18/24 for 185 yards and 3 touchdowns. The running, without Laurence Maroney and LaMont Jordan, was dominant. Sammy Morris ran 16 times for 138 yards and 1 TD, but was injured in the first half and did not return to the game. First-year RB BenJarvis Green-Ellis, in his first game action, was equally impressive. Green-Ellis ran 13 times for 65 yards (5.0 yards per carry) and 1 TD, and he ran with authority. BenJarvis is going to be someone to keep an eye on as the season progresses, and he may become even more important if Sammy Morris is seriously injured.

Pats/Broncos halftime analysis
The New England Patriots are up 20-0 at halftime on the visiting Denver Broncos, a score that is surprising to most (including me). The Patriots’ offense has been powered by Sammy Morris’ power runs, and he already has 138 yards on 16 carries and one touchdown. However, on almost every series on offense, Matt Cassel has been sacked. The Broncos have 5 sacks at halftime, an alarming stat. The Pats have already yielded more sacks than they did ALL SEASON last year. Upon first look, it doesn’t appear to be all on the offensive line. Cassel is holding onto the ball too long and can’t side-step the pass rush like Brady has done so well. Keeping Cassel upright is going to continue to be a story throughout the season.
