Pats dropping the ball in the first half

The first half of the Pittsburgh/New England game can be best summarized in one word: drops. Both the Steelers and the Pats have had numerous drops, none more damaging and disheartening than THREE straight drops in the red zone by Randy Moss at the end of teh first half. Those drops were magnified by the fact that Stephen Gostkowski missed the field goal to close out the half, so the Pats ended up with zero points to cap what was an excellent 2-minute drive. Moss has had at least 5 drops so far in the first half on what are usually easy passes for him or any other wide receiver to catch. The defense’s Achilles’ heel so far this year has been its secondary, and those problems persist. The Steelers have done virtually nothing on the ground, their strong suit, but have connected through the air to score its points. Deltha O’Neal, as usual, has been the glaring negative in this backfield full of suspect players. Aside from the secondary, the defense’s front seven has played extremely well, highlighted by Mike Vrabel’s interception to open the game, which led to New England’s lone touchdown on a Sammy Morris run.

Reality strikes: so should the Patriots really franchise Cassel

I have been honest in stating that I did not feel quarterback Matt Cassel had done anything in the preseason to warrant staying with the Patriots and should have been cut leaving Matt Guteirrez and Kevin O’Connell as the backups behind Tom Brady.

Matt Cassel has done well and improving every game since taking over from Brady in the first game of the season.

Cassel has had the opportunity to show case his talents and now will be able to reap the rewards as this is his last year of his rookie contract. Now the NFL has had the chance to see Cassel’s value rather then just having mop up duty (or the the vision of the horrible inteception returned for a TD highlight by Jason Taylor versus Miami in 2007).

Patriots score crucial victory over Dolphins in the AFC East

If you’d told me in Week 1 that by Week 10 I’d be saying things like, “It’s not that I don’t want Brady to come back, it’s just that I wish there was some way we could keep Matt Cassel,” I’d have checked your forehead and asked if you felt all right.

But that’s exactly what I found myself saying today as the Patriots scored 20 unanswered points against Miami and took a key victory to stay alive in the division. They remain behind the 3-1 Jets, (who knocked off Tennessee today–ouch!) but kept their record positive at 3-2.

Sloppy game by Pats, but lead 17-14

The Pats are visiting the Miami Dolphins and lead at halftime 17-14. They haven’t played the prettiest game, and could be up comfortably if not for drive-killing penalties and two turnovers. The offense has moved up and down the field, but a fumble and an INT along with costly false starts, unnecessary roughness, and holding penalties have completely killed drives. Miami has scored its 14 points off of the two turnovers. The defense, overall, has played OK but was unable to stop the Dolphins when they got the ball off of a turnover. They have been stout against the run and have made the Wild Cat offense a non-factor, but again, the secondary is playing awful. They have given up several third-and-long conversions to the team that is (was?) dead last in 3rd & long conversions. Here is the defensive score so far:

Patriots 'Bend don't Break' mentality will be tested against Miami

The New England Patriots have been known as a defensively steady team under head coach Bill Belichick. When Tom Brady replaced Drew Bledsloe in 2001, the Patriots defense helped the Patriots win games that year and offense united to rally under the new QB.

2008 and a similar scenario, however, as much as people make out Matt Cassel’s play versus Brady. Cassel has learned quickly and steadily improving, much like the Patriots of old getting better as the season went on. The team around him has not performed as well. The myriad of running backs, early injuries to the offensive line did little to help Cassel at the begining of the season.

Pats add another to IR

Adding to the ever-growing list of players on IR, the Pats added corner Terrence Wheatley today with a broken wrist, thus ending his rookie season. This leaves the secondary yet ANOTHER man down for the year. It’s hard to imagine how this team is going to make it to the end of the season with a full roster. At the rate the Patriots are going, they’ll be able to field a team of injured reserve players. There have been no moves as of yet to sign another corner to the roster. Perhaps they should have been a little more aggressive going after DeAngelo Hall or Ty Law?

Patriots and Jets take fans on a roller coaster ride

Pats-Jets Fireworks

When I picked this game to go 16-10 Patriots, I was mostly basing my assumptions on the last game they played, which the Patriots won, 19-10. Obviously I was wildly wrong. But so was everybody, right down to the weather forecasters.

I’d been expecting a wet, windy, sleety, down and dirty defensive slugfest, and instead what we got was a chilly, clear, instant classic featuring over 700 yards of offense between the two teams, and a combined 65 points when all was said and done.

Jets' soaring at halftime, lead 24-13

The NY Jets’ offense is taking it to the Patriots’ defense so far, having to punt only once in the first half. They are winning the battles on first down against the defense, setting up manageable 3rd down situations. The Pats are 2-6 in 3rd-down stops, and one of those stops led to a field goal. The defense’s problem early on was quite evident: no pressure. Brett Favre had all day to throw. The Pats only rushed 3 guys, which made no sense at all. Once they dialed in the pressure on the Jets’ last offensive series of the half, the J-E-T-S went 3-and-out. Keeping with the defensive theme, here’s the breakdown so far as to winning the battle down-for-down:

AD out, Law in…in NY

Linebacker Adalius Thomas is going to be sidelined for the rest of the season with a broken forearm. Thomas was injured Sunday against the Bills. This is a major blow for the Pats, after already losing starters Rodney Harrison and Laurence Maroney for the season. Oh yeah, and TOM BRADY as well. Thomas was one of the few Patriots to be consistently getting pressure on the quarterback. Richard Seymour and AD were tied for the team lead in sacks (5). The next closest players in sacks are Mike Vrabel and Ty Warren, each with 2. The impact of this injury is even greater because last week, the Patriots put rookie outside linebacker Shawn Crable on IR, so they are even thinner at OLB than previously thought. When Thomas left the game on Sunday, Pierre Woods was his replacement and did a decent but unspectacular job.
