Jerod Mayo named Defensive Rookie of the Year
Pats’ rookie linebacker Jerod Mayo was named the AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year today, nearly unanimously. Mayo received 49 out of 50 votes, with the Bengals’ Keith Rivers getting the one dissenting vote. Mayo, from Day One, was a starter on a veteran defense that usually covets experienced veterans over young rookies. For many games, he played every defensive snap, and helped man the middle of the defense with Tedy Bruschi.
Mayo totaled 137 tackles, which led the team, and he had one forced fumble. Mayo was excellent running down ball carriers and did well in coverage as well. Mayo did not have any sacks, but that’s not the role of the Belichick middle linebackers anyway.

Patriots may take time to rest, but have to make the donuts soon enough
The New England Patriots are out of the playoffs and can take great pride in the effort they delivered during the 2008 season.
Coach Bill Belichick was correct when he recently suggested the team has chance to rest.
“I think one thing that we all need, and probably deserve around
here, is a little bit of rest. Again, a lot of our players, in the last
couple of years, went from the end of the season, to rehabbing an
injury, to jumping into the offseason program, to getting back on that
treadmill again.
Offseason begins early, fall-out from Week 17
Despite finishing 11-5 on the season, the New England Patriots have missed the playoffs for the first time since 2002. For a re-cap of yesterday’s events, check out Beth’s article here. I will admit, I did not anticipate an 11-5 finish when Tom Brady went down and I witnessed the continual decline in the play of the defense. However, despite all of those issues and the multitude of injuries on both sides of the ball, the Pats are 11-5, and that’s a hell of an accomplishment. Whether it’s Brady or Cassel next year at the helm, the Patriots have to be considered among the favorites to go all the way next season, especially with some upgrades (hopefully) on the defensive side of the ball. Depressed about the Pats’ season ending? Bill Belichick is almost relieved to get a rest and longer amount of time to thoroughly analyze the team, I would imagine in order to make the proper changes. Here’s Bill’s positive spin on a Patriot-less playoffs:

Patriots beat Buffalo Bills, miss playoffs
Before their fate was decided at the hands of their sworn enemies, the New York Jets, the Patriots played a memorable season finale against the upstate New York team, in a stadium that had become a wind tunnel.
Gusts were reported in the Buffalo area up to 60 mph–before the game both goalposts were bent over at odd angles. During the game, at least one of them would bend back again, requiring a crew to reposition it before a field goal could be attempted.
Wind playing havoc with play calling
With the wind swirling around Ralph Wilson Stadium, the Pats and the Bills have had to change the way they call the game. The Pats have been the only ones able to connect on a field goal, and lead 3-0. Both the Bills and the Pats have had field goals be blown clear away from their targets. They even have had to stop play in order to re-set the goal posts because they were blown off to the side.

Patriots need more then a Christmas gift to make it to the playoffs
This week more then one person has commented about rooting for the Jets to win versus the Dolphins in order for the Patriots to clinch the AFC East title and become the 3rd seed on the AFC. I think a few people have forgotten the Patriots need to beat the Bills first.
If both the Dolphins and Patriots do win then the only way the Patriots may make it in a wild card spot is if the Ravens lose to the Jaguars. I think it will be a tough job for the Jags. The Ravens are playing extremely well and rookie quarterback Joe Flacco has been playing better then I expected. But this would be the second gift the Patriots would need to receive.

Game Diary: Snow, sleet, rain and Cardinals fall at Gillette
Photo, from a different Snow Bowl, by Beth.
The New England Patriots are 9-0 in the snow at Gillette. They’ve won 22 of their last 24 games in December, and their last 14 regular-season games against NFC opponents. The Arizona Cardinals, meanwhile, haven’t played in the snow in 25 years. Merry Christmas, Pats fans.
I was supposed to have been at that game, but the snow, sleet and rain kept me trapped at home this time around. It’s not that I would’ve minded sitting in the snow for the game (far from it)–it’s that trying to drive in the snow last winter taught me my lesson. I was stranded once for 7 hours and had an accident another time. No more machismo on the roads for me, even if it means missing out on Snow Bowl 08.
Belichick mic'd up
NFL.com has an excellent video of Bill Belichick mic’d up. You can view it at this link: http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d80d74a78
You can see Belichick’s humorous side as well as his compassionate side in dealing with Matt Cassel. We often hear from the players that the Belichick we see is not the Belichick known to them, and it seems as though they’re right.

Pats handling the snow and the Cards
The Arizona Cardinals haven’t played a snow game since 1983, and it shows. They simply cannot handle the weather. The Patriots are handling the Cards 31-0. I’m not sure that’s the score if this was played under normal conditions, but that’s all part of the game. The Pats need to win today and next week to have a shot at their dwindling playoff hopes thanks do Baltimore winning in Dallas last night. To get the best explanation of what needs to happen for the Pats to get into the postseason, check out Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe’s explanation. Basically, the Pats need to win out and the Jets and/or the Dolphins have to lose this week and next week. They can also get in if Baltimore strangely loses to Jacksonville next week.

Pats sending two to the Pro Bowl
The Patriots will be sending two of its players to the Pro Bowl, and are unquestionably two deserving, if not the most deserving, young players. Wide receiver Wes Welker and Kicker Stephen Gostkowski will make the trip to Honolulu this year and participate in the NFL’s all-star game.
Wes Welker has been the most consistent player on offense and has produced virtually every game this season. Through the first 11 games of the season, Welker caught at least 6 passes each game, which set an NFL record. Welker has consistently made the tough catch and doesn’t shy away from contact. He is also an excellent blocker and can been seen by the keen observer springing other players to longer gains by keeping away would-be tacklers. Wes currently has 102 receptions, good for second in the NFL (Andre Johnson has 103) and has amassed 1,071 receiving yards.
