Patriots by position: Running Back

The New England Patriots have more then a few areas to solidify during the offseason, however the running back group is not one of them.

When looking at the overall group returning from 2008, the Patriots have Laurence Maroney (back from injured reserve), Sammy Morris, Kevin Faulk and second year undrafted free agent BenJarvis Green-Ellis.

The Patriots did lose Heath Evans and Lamont Jordan during the offseason, however, the running back group has improved with the addition of the multi-talented former Jacksonville Jaguars standout Fred Taylor. Taylor joins the team and kind of replaces both Evans (good hands, running catching and blocking) and Lamont Jordan, who had spent more time injured as he did playing. So yes, Taylor may be the one to replace both and possibly leaving room for one more running back to be acquired via the draft.

Patriots by position: Quarterback

Day 300: Brady, dropped back

This post kicks off our series leading up to Draft Day evaluating the Patriots’ needs and prospective strategies at each position on the roster. Today, we’re starting with quarterbacks.

Obviously, with Tom Brady coming back, the role of starter is presumably filled. At the very least, he will be given quite a long time to make a comeback, and I don’t foresee anyone else having a realistic shot at the starting spot. I also think it should be Brady’s position to lose.

Patriots around the league

The off-season progresses on a slow pace and this week the owners meet to agree changes, financial status, terms to rules and regulations, set the 2009 schedule and network.

It has been announced the New England Patriots will playing versus the Bills for the first Monday Night Football game of the season and be wearing their throw back uniforms from 1963 when they made it to the AFL championships. The Pat Patriot logo will return for this game and two others during the regular season.

Julius Peppers: Will he or won't he?

Arizona Cardinals v Carolina Panthersnit = function() {try{initIamServingHandler(320,396,746898,”http://cdn.pis.picapp.com/IamProd/Resources/Css/css2.css”)}catch(ex){}}()

The pace of news in this Patriots offseason continues to be fast and furious. Just this week, the Patriots have signed two players, former Buccaneers wideout Joey Galloway and returning defensive lineman Mike Wright.

After only a few days, however, those recent signings, and the departures of Scott Pioli, Josh McDaniels, Larry Izzo (OUCH), Matt Cassel, Mike Vrabel, Lonnie Paxton, Heath Evans and Jabar Gaffney, as well as the arrival or re-signing of Greg Lewis, Chris Baker, Nathan Hodel, Brad Listorti, Shawn Springs, Leigh Bodden, Al Johnson and Fred Taylor in addition to Galloway and Wright…(deep breath)…are already being left aside in favor of the subject of Julius Peppers.

Patriots sign WR Galloway and re-sign Wright

The New England Patriots continue to strengthen the team through the free agency period as wide receiver Joey Galloway becomes the next veteran to sign with the team.

Galloway, 37, has been a consistent figure in the NFL after being selected in the first round by the Seattle Seahawks, playing for the Dallas Cowboys and most recently the past five years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Although Galloway did not play the entire 2008 season due to two broken bones in his foot, he immediately upgrades the wide receiver position and should start as the number three receiver (or number 2 with Wes Welker playing the slot).

Patriots losing out on third phase of the game

As New England Patriots Bill Belichick has often said winning games comes from successful execution on all three phases of the game: Offense, Defense and Special teams.

Offensively, the Patriots will have Tom Brady back to lead the team and return to the playoffs.

Defensively, the Patriots still need to improve their secondary (the addition of Leigh Bodden and Shawn Springs helps quite a bit) and after losing linebacker Mike Vrabel need to bring in players able to attack the edge and pressure the quarterback.

On special teams, the Patriots have experienced a wave of personnel and player losses at every level.

Patriots roster moves changes draft needs

The Patriots have made a few roster moves setting the stage for an interesting training camp and leading us into the quiet period before the draft. The only ‘information’ over the next month or so will be from us bloggers, news pundits adn draftniks speculating who will be New England’s first pick in the draft. Recent additions to the roster may mean an emphasis at outside linebacker with the first pick.

Pats' secondary looks promising

The Patriots signed corner Leigh Bodden to a one-year deal today, adding the young defensive back to a new-look secondary that finished near the bottom in touchdown passes allowed last season. Bodden joins recently-signed corner Shawn Springs in what looks to be a promising defensive backfield. After fans had to deal with Deltha O’Neal, Jason Webster, and Lewis Sanders along with veteran scapegoat Ellis Hobbs, the new signees combined with last year’s draft picks has to give Pats fans reason for optimism.

The Ego Has Landed in the AFC East: TO signs with Bills

Day 361: Patriots Go 16-0
Is Buffalo trying for a Moss redux? (photo by Beth)

So here I am on an unseasonably warm Sunday afternoon, watching the Red Sox tee off on their ALCS nemesis, Tampa Bay, enjoying the idyllic pre-season pace of it all while I gear up for another work week. I began last year’s baseball season with the worst football hangover I’d ever experienced, and I’ve been determined this year to make up for the fact that I couldn’t muster any enthusiasm for my baseball team until at least last May or June.

Patriot Act: Pats offense an area of concern?

New England Patriots fans have experienced a few years of offensive bliss as the Bill Belichick era of offensive prowess has changed the dynamic of a team known as a defensive nightmare to face.

Patriot Nation still have some concern about quarterback Tom Brady starting at the beginning of the season and others wonder if Kevin O’Connell is the ‘man’ or will a veteran be signed before training camp.
