Pats win 23-16, tied with the Bills for 1st in the East

It took all four quarters for the Patriots to squeak out a victory against the Rams, scoring the go-ahead touchdown late in the 4th quarter. Matt Cassel threw for his highest amount of passing yardage so far this season (267), but also threw 2 INTs and 1 TD. Kevin Faulk led the ground game with 60 yards on 13 carries, with BenJarvus Green-Ellis rushing 9 times for 16 yards and 1 TD. Kevin Faulk also had 4 catches for 47 yards and a the go-ahead TD.

Patriots have a new start after the bye week

With a 2-1 record going into the Bye week, most Patriots fans would have thought the loss came versus the Jets even if Tom Brady was still playing. Well the loss is behind us and now we can move forward – even without Brady.
The record shows who the Patriots are as a number two in the AFC East behind a dynamic 4-0 Buffalo Bills team that has improved over 2007, but also enjoying the same scheduling as the other members in the AFC East. So it only goes to show the opportinites that lay ahead for the Pats.
The last two weeks have allowed the players to regroup, heal and come together as a new team since the opening day. The team captains and veterans have more responsibility now more then ever (well at least since 2001 when Drew Beldsloe went down).
The coaching staff has much more to prove then the players. Not only do they need to plan for each game as normal, but now redesign the team that has had so much recent success.
‘If it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ was never a Bill Belichick attitude, but even the smartest of players have had a few problems during the first three games.
The Patriot Way seems to have been lost in the first quarter from that first game.Offensively one could argue it makes sense that there is some confusion, but on defense and special teams there should not have been such a big impact from losing one player. More easily said then done.
The challenge will be finding another path along the Patriot Way to make it work with this team. Each player and coach has a new defining moment and now is the time to ‘Cowboy up’ (ah the Red Sox!) or as we used to say ‘deal with it’.
As the past few weeks have made many in Patriot Nation wonder what will happen after the loss in Miami, an event transpired that saddens and maybe indicates the fate of the franchise in the moment as Mr. Patriot Troy Brown has retired.
The end of a career and an era of an individual that every time he took the field put on the boots and got the work done no matter what is was and no matter what was needed to do it.
This is the attitude I am looking to see today from the Patriots in San Francisco. When the Patriots run onto the field as a team, and play as a team for 60 minutes to execute a game plan and win in all three phases of the game – together!
IN BILL WE TRUST!!

No offense, Patriots need to work together

The New England Patriots are not in desperate times, but they do need to take desperate measures in order to improve upon their recent performance and overcome the loss of Tom Brady.
Randy Moss’ recent comments there are ten other players on offense to help QB Matt Cassel, couldn’t be more true. The lack luster performance versus the Dolphins, was not a result of Matt Cassel’s play as much as it was the entire team being in a ‘funk’ and looking a bit lost.
The offensive line was continuously under pressure and gave up five sacks and could not open up a hole for the running game to be established. Once the Dolphins built up a big lead the pressure was on Cassel to win it in the air.
This week the Patriots face a San Francisco defense that was not able to apply much pressure to Dree Brees and also allowed Duece McAllistar and Reggie Bush to combine for over 100 yards rushing and a touchdown.
The Patriots should do just as well with Laurence Maroney, Sammy Morris, Lamont Jordan and Kevin Faulk, but hopefully better if they also move out of the backfield and can run the short routes on pass plays.
San Francisco also gave up over 350 yards in the air and three touchdowns as

Patriots defense need to make a stand

As much as I may criticize the offensive line and Matt Cassel’s performance so far this year, the game is played in three phases – offense, defense and special teams – and versus Miami the defense was the weakest link forcing the Patriots to come from behind and rely on the arm of Matt Cassel.

Patriots Bandwagoners, mount up!

Just as surely as the turf in Gillette Stadium is green and white, fair-weather fans of Patriot Nation are showing their true colors. Buck up troopers! This is only one performance of a long season and the first loss in 21 regular season games.
The Patriots played against one of their all time toughest rivals where generally Miami has at least one win a season against the Patriots. Last year was obviously (16-0) and exception.
Now having lived through the Tony Eason era and then some other obvious fun times before Drew Bledsloe, Bill Parcells and the honorable Robert Kraft created what has become known as one of the best Franchises in the NFL, this is not and will not become the worst of times.
Now time for some cool aid!
I have said before that I am not a big fan of Matt Cassel and he still has alot of experience to gain before he will really be… impressive.

Dolphins dominate Patriots

The Miami Dolphins spanked the Patriots, beating them 38-13. The Dolphins racked up over 200 yards rushing and Chad Pennington was nearly perfect, going 17/20 for 226 yards. Ronnie Brown was the star of the day, running for 4 touchdowns and passing for 1 TD. Three out of those 5 TDs were off of a direct-snap play to Brown (2 rushing, 1 passing). Besides the scores, that same play yielded success each time it was run, usually with Brown going up the middle on the snap and rushing for long gains. The defense never adjusted to the play and couldn’t stop Pennington when he passed the ball, only missing on 3 attempts. Pats fans can legitimately worry because the defense was supposed to be what held this team together, but they looked awful today against a team that had yet to put much of anything together on either side of the ball. here is the defensive score, which pretty much tells the story of the game:
First down: 11 wins, 17 losses
Second down: 5 wins, 15 losses
Third down: 5 wins, 4 losses
Final score: 21 wins, 36 losses
Quite a few of those wins came late in the game when everyone on the stadium knew Miami was running. What is most telling, I feel, is that Miami only had 9 3rd down plays. They had tremendous success on 1st and especially 2nd down, having 28 first down plays and 20 second down plays, only having a 3rd and more than 4 yards 5 times.
Kevin O’Connell did enter the game at the end but did not do much with the ball, going 3/4 for 25 yards. Matt Cassell ended the game 19/31 for 131 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT (could have been 3 INTs) and 1 fumble. He made many bad looking throws and I’m not sure how much confidence the coaching staff has in him to bring the team back should it fall behind again, and if they can’t fix the defense, they may fall behind a lot this season.
Bill Belichick and the coaching staff has a lot to think about this week with the bye coming up. What were the break downs on defense? Can Cassel quarterback this team to the post season? Now, with the extra time due to the bye, is the time to make a decision one way or the other. Buffalo, with its win today, is now in first place in the AFC East. It should be an interesting bye week…

Patriots moving forward

I have to admit up front that I am one of the fans that ciriticized Matt Cassel and was looking for him to be bounced off the team when training camp broke.
I figured Matt Gutierrez had done enough to show he was as capable as Cassel to back up Tom Brady. Plus Cassel was not impressive last year or during this year’s training camp.
Cassel had to go or so I thought…..
It is true Cassel is no Tom Brady. Although Brady is who he is today, I liked the fact

Dust starts to settle in New England

The last 24+ hours have been a whirlwind for Patriots fans, waiting to get an official word on the status of “The Franchise,” quarterback Tom Brady. As Beth mentioned earlier, Brady is officially out for the year, his season ending before the first quarter of the first game was over. The Pats still haven’t officially announced what exactly the injury is, only that it’s a left knee injury that will require season-ending surgery. However, it has been speculated that it’s an ACL tear, which will knock him out for approximately 8-9 months, according to a doctor interviewed on ESPN earlier today. That means that Brady should be back and ready to go next season. But, that’s NEXT season. What about this season? Is all lost? What will the Pats do with the roster?
Tom Brady, not surprisingly, still feels that this team has the ability to pull it off. What ‘”it” is is not clear. Win the division? Win the AFC? Win the Super Bowl?

Patriots are all business all the time

The New England Patriots were featured earlier today on CNBC with interviews between Tom Brady and Randy Moss.
The interview covers the Brady-Moss connection with football and then as well marketing (Moss with Pony) and other investment interests.
Patriots owner Robert Kraft also talks about giving advice on investing. Although he believes Brady and Moss are doing well on their own.
You can see my first time being on CNBC last year here.
