Was it the Patriots or the Titans?
Patriots fans have a lot to be happy about after Sunday’s 59 – 0 shellacking of the Tennessee Titans. The offense moved at will up and down the snowy Gillette Stadium field and the defense stonewalled the Titans’ offense every series, pitching a shut out. However, many fans have been questioning whether Sunday’s domination was because of the Patriots regaining form or the Tennessee Titans showing why they are now 0 – 6. It was a little bit of both, probably more so that the Titans were really THAT bad. I would put it at 60 – 40. However, Pats fans do have definite positives to take from the game, even if it was the Titans.
Runningback Fred Taylor to have surgery
The Patriots’ depth at runningback will be tested after news broke this afternoon that Fred Taylor has to have surgery on his right ankle and may miss the rest of the season.
According to Chris Gasper on the Globe’s Extra Points blog:
Taylor sustained an eversion ankle sprain — meaning he rolled his
ankle to the outside — on his final carry in the Patriots’ 27-21 win
over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. Taylor, who finished the game with
seven carries for 25 yards, hobbled to the sideline following the
3-yard run with under five minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Pats fans reeling as Patriots announce Seymour trade

Richard Seymour has left giant footprints in Foxboro, in more ways than one…
The claim is that there are no “special” players. Ostensibly, the New England Patriots are a team of equals, interchangeable parts.
But as the 2009 off-season and pre-season have revealed, certain names have still risen to iconic, cherished status on the Patriots roster.
Vrabel, Bruschi and now Seymour top that list. Vrabel was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs for draft picks. Bruschi’s emotional retirement came this week. And now, it’s being widely reported that Richard Seymour has been traded to the Oakland Raiders for a first-round 2011 draft pick.

Roster cut to final 53 – who will make it?
I originally posted my outlook for the 53 man roster two weeks ago and a few surprise changes with Tredy Brushi retiring and Kevin O’Connell being cut. Also a few other players are back from injuries.
So who do I think will make it?
QB 3 Brady, Walter, Hoyer. Hoyer is a developmental player, but the Pats may choose a vet over him as Damon Huard is available and supposedly the Eagles may be interested to trade AJ Feeley. Feeley? Sure trade him striaght up for Alex Smith! Next
RB 5 Morris, Faulk, Taylor, Maroney, Green-Ellis. More then a few believe Sammy Morris will get cut. But I think he makes it.

Patriots by position: S
If the Patriots are going to use higher-round draft picks to select anything other than a linebacker or defensive end, it should be at this position. Youngster Brandon Meriweather is showing promise at this position, and James Sanders is a serviceable partner for him in the secondary. Tank Williams, who spent most of 2008 on IR along with many of his brethren in the secondary, could be a wild card here.
But until they find his replacement – not discounting the idea it may be Meriweather – they have a big, Rodney-Harrison-shaped hole in their roster.
It won’t be quick or easy to replace Harrison’s veteran leadership (this may be where Tank Williams comes in), but the Patriots can keep their eye out for someone who can at least replace his tough hits and aggressive attitude – James Sanders just ain’t cuttin’ it for me in that department, and neither is special-teamer Raymond Ventrone. I would love to see the Patriots pick up a hungry young draft pick at this position like Jerod Mayo.
Some safeties have been in the mix during the combine and pre-draft workouts for the Patriots. Patrick Chung of Oregon, William Moore of Missouri, and Louis Delmas of Western Michigan have gotten pre-draft workouts. Chung is said to be intense and competitive, and can also serve as a punt returner. Delmas played as a free safety and is said to be a hungry, aggressive young player with good leadership skills.
Also among the top safety prospects this year is Alabama’s Rashad Johnson. Scouting reports on him are tantalizing; Patriots Football Weekly writer Erik Scalavino says Johnson “Reminds me of Brandon Meriweather with better hands.”
Who knows what kind of gamesmanship it might mean coming from Belichick and Co., but from the mix of players that have been worked out, the impression seems to be the team would like to draft at this position around the second round. Moore, Johnson and Delmas are all expected to be available between the second and third rounds, and it’s likely the Patriots will snap one of them up with their 34th pick.
Patriots by position: CB
The Patriots lack a true shutdown corner on a par with Champ Bailey or Ty Law in his heyday. However, they actually have seven cornerbacks on the roster, and restocked at this position during free agency with the signing of Shawn Springs and Leigh Bodden.
Both are unknown quantities at this point, with Springs having started only half the games on the Washington Redskins’ schedule in 2008 and Bodden claiming the dubious honor of having contributed to the Detroit Lions’ record-breaking 0-15 season last year.
Patriots by position: OT
Offensive linemen, and particularly offensive left tackles, are among the most important players on the field. If it wasn’t for their needs at linebacker and defensive back, I’d say the Patriots should use their draft picks to build this unit for the future.
The pipe dream pick in the first round for me would be Michael Oher, star of the excellent Michael Lewis book, The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game. The book examines the development of football players from high school through the college recruiting process, and also tells Oher’s extraordinary life story–he was essentially homeless and illiterate until he was taken in by a family during his high school years.

Patriots by position: Wide Receiver
Continuing our series evaluating the Patriots’ roster and needs heading in to the draft…
Wide receiver is not an especial area of need for the Patriots. They have six WRs currently on the roster, including the newly-signed free agent Joey Galloway, who will join Randy Moss and Wes Welker among the veterans in the receiving corps. Further down the depth chart are Greg Lewis, Sam Aiken and Matthew Slater. To be blunt about it, as long as Moss and Welker are on the staff, I’m not worried.

Patriots by position: Quarterback
This post kicks off our series leading up to Draft Day evaluating the Patriots’ needs and prospective strategies at each position on the roster. Today, we’re starting with quarterbacks.
Obviously, with Tom Brady coming back, the role of starter is presumably filled. At the very least, he will be given quite a long time to make a comeback, and I don’t foresee anyone else having a realistic shot at the starting spot. I also think it should be Brady’s position to lose.

Julius Peppers: Will he or won't he?
The pace of news in this Patriots offseason continues to be fast and furious. Just this week, the Patriots have signed two players, former Buccaneers wideout Joey Galloway and returning defensive lineman Mike Wright.
After only a few days, however, those recent signings, and the departures of Scott Pioli, Josh McDaniels, Larry Izzo (OUCH), Matt Cassel, Mike Vrabel, Lonnie Paxton, Heath Evans and Jabar Gaffney, as well as the arrival or re-signing of Greg Lewis, Chris Baker, Nathan Hodel, Brad Listorti, Shawn Springs, Leigh Bodden, Al Johnson and Fred Taylor in addition to Galloway and Wright…(deep breath)…are already being left aside in favor of the subject of Julius Peppers.
