Porter at it again

Miami Dolphins linebacker Jerry Porter and his ever-flapping gums are no strangers to Patriots fans or, for that matter, any NFL fan. Porter’s mouth is in a constant state of readiness, and is often in use, belittling his opponents and doing a hefty dose of trash talking. That trend has continued this week leading up to the big AFC East showdown between the Pats and the Fins this Sunday at Gillette Stadium. During a conference call with New England reporters earlier in the week, Porter started out by explaining just how he feels about the Patriots, and those feelings didn’t start when he joined the division.

My feelings toward New England go back further. It goes back to my Pittsburgh days. I felt a certain way, after some things came out, way back when I was in Pittsburgh, some AFC championships I lost to them, couple times. Come to figure out a few months later why we lost. So yeah, I have a natural hate for them. Period. And that’s just gonna be with me forever.

With the excitement of the draft dwindling behind us, the New England Patriots are looking forward to their new rookie talent to arrive in Foxboro, Massachusetts.
Today, first round draft pick Linebacker Jerod Mayo will be introduced by Robert and Jonathan Kraft to the fans and media.
The drafted and undrafted rookies will go through a two day mini-camp beginning on Friday and we will have updates from Bill Belichick.
Who will attend the rookie training?
According to NEPatriotsDraft.com the following players are undrafted free agents picked up by the Pats:
LB Vince Redd (Liberty), Mike Dragosavich (NDSU) – signed by the team, DE Chris Norwell (Illinois), TE Jon Stupar (Virginia), C Ryan Wendell – Fresno St.), OT Josh Coffman (ECU) – 2 years/$0 Bonus, DL Casey Tyler (Portland St.) – 1 year/$0 Bonus, DL Carlos Feliciano (Maryland), LB Gary Guyton (Georgia Tech), RB Benjarvus Green-Ellis (Ole Miss), LB Keith Saunders (Alabama), SS Mark Dillard (La Tech) and both RB Kenny Cattouse (Troy) and TE Tyson DeVree (Colorado) on a tryout basis.
After the draft the Patriots reviewed their personnel and have released veteran linebacker TJ Slaughter and former practice squad member defensive back Tim Mixon.
Still no word or updates on Junior Seau or Ty Law to return to the team.
It should be in interesting weekend to see how the rookies adjust and to see if there are any other roster moves.

Patriots play and win as a team

The New England Patriots have the best record in the NFL having gone 17-0 so far in the 2007 season.
The record of 19-0 is in sight, but the Patriots are not focused on that point. They are looking to win the next game versus the San Diego Chargers.
Does the win bring the team one more game closer to destiny and dynasty? To hear it from the individual players you would nto think so. Being true to

2007 NFL Awards – Defensive Player of the Year?

I have to say Mike Vrabel has been a long time favorite of mine playing outside, inside no outside linebacker for the Patriots. He has the athletic talent and brains to play both positions at a great level and this year his 77 tackles, 12.5 sacks and 5 forced fumbles is not bad for a situational player obtained from Pittsburgh a few years ago.
So being a homer Vrabel would get the nod as defensive player of the year.
But since I want to be objective, I will have to admit Bob Sanders of the Colts is a premiere Safety, but although he had 96 tackles, 3.5 sacks and 2 interceptions – he is not my choice.
My selection for defensive player of the year would have to be James Harrison of the Steelers. Harrison had 98 tackles, 8.5 sacks, 7 forced fumbles and an interception returned 20 yards. Harrison has played the best season of his career and should continue to add to the defensive prowess of the Steelers for years to come.

Steelers out – Patriots may play Jaguars

The Pittsburgh Steelers fall to the Jacksonville Jaguars in a 31-29 upset won in the last minutes on a Josh Scobee field goal.
The game was a game in the trenches. The Jaguars did not start off well and the Steelers were soon leading 7-0. But the Jaguars defensive line stepped up and controlled the line of scrimmage and only allowed 43 rushing yards on 26 attempts. The Jags defensive line pressured Ben Roethlisberger and sacked him 6 times and forced him to make bad throws with 3 interceptions. If you would like a review of the game you can read Tim McClellan’s article at Jaguars Journal or James’ view over at The Steel Tradition.
The pressure on Roethlisberger will be the same type of pressure Tom Brady will face if the Tennessee Titans lose against the Chargers today in San Diego and the Patriots do in fact face the Jaguars.
The Patriots offensive line has played the best football this year with Dan Koppen, Matt Light and Logan Mankins going to the Pro Bowl. The Pats game versus the Giants is another example of how a team with a great defensive front seven (Philly, Ravens and yes even the Colts – read the Colts article for a good laugh) did pressure Brady, but was not able to do it for sixty minutes. Give Brady a second and it has been a second too long as Brady will find someone open.
The Jaguars added pressure and stopped the Steelers running game, but the Steelers still had 337 passing yards and two touchdown passes. If this is the weak area of the Jaguars then obviously the Patriots have the game plan to beat them here.
The Patriots weapons of mass receptions should provide ample opportunities for Brady to find an open receiver whether it is Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Donte’ Stallworth or Jabar Gaffney.
The Patriots will also be able to use Kevin Faulk on draw plays or catching out of the back field or go to Ben Watson as the Jags are not able to cover the middle as well if the receivers stretch the field.
So offensively the Patriots look to be in a good position as Coach Bill Belichick takes advantages of a team’s weakness and also takes what the opposing team will give him.
So as much as I think Tennessee will be an easier road to the AFC Championship, the Jaguars will not stop that destiny. But I do believe the Jaguars have a better chance to beat the Colts then the Chargers.

Anthony Smith will be seeing the Patriots in his dreams

As the intricate patterns of the offense unfolded in this game, I thought to myself, it is a good thing that Tom Brady and his receivers are so familiar with one another through both practice and in-game experience given the seemingly infinite spectrum of plays they’re expected to execute on command. It is also a good thing that the Patriots got used to playing full-tilt for the entire game; it seems from some of the player comments I’ve heard that Bill Belichick has put an extra emphasis on conditioning this year from training camp on.
In other words, it is a good thing that earlier this season, Tom Brady wasn’t pulled from games at halftime, and a good thing that the Patriots didn’t face their tougher opponents with no clue how the first-string offense could perform together in the fourth quarter.
Just sayin’.

Patriots face their toughest challenge yet with the Steelers

I’ll admit it: I’m a little worried about the Patriots facing the Steelers this week. In fact, I would go so far as to say I’m a little apprehensive.
The Patriots have taken on all comers this season and pulled out close games against Indianapolis, the Eagles and the Ravens, as well as blowouts against other teams. It seems no matter what their opponents try, the Patriots are at least just a scoch better. But the Steelers worry me for two reasons: history and defense.
First, these two teams have a history of breaking one another’s streaks. It was the Steelers who broke the Patriots’ winning streak back in 2005 (18 or 21 games in a row, depending on how you’re counting). The Patriots returned the favor last year, breaking up the Steelers’ 16-0 streak. The Steelers have reason, furthermore, to have an extra chip on their shoulders about the Patriots: were it not for the Patriots, the Steelers might well have had at least one more championship this decade (in 2001, when the upstart Pats upset them at home) if not two (the Patriots also beat the Steelers at home in the 2004 playoffs).
Meanwhile, it’s clear the Patriots’ opponents are chipping away at them, week by week. They’ve gone from 20- and 30-point win margins to wins by a field goal in recent weeks, especially when facing top defenses. And now here comes the best defense of them all.
The inimitable Cold, Hard Football Facts lays out the facts about Pittsburgh’s D in this great feature article this week. In fact, according to the CHFF analysis, not only are the Steelers the best defensive team in the league, “The Steelers of 2007 are putting up defensive numbers equal or superior to all five of the franchise’s Super Bowl champions, if you can believe it.”
Meanwhile, my esteemed colleague laid out the weaknesses an injury-shortened defense for the Patriots has been showing. The Patriots have still won all their games, but they’ve also given up quite a few points, which has been made up for by the high-flying offense. But this is a game in which the Patriots’ D needs to clamp down; there’s just no way the Patriots’ offense is going to have an easy time of it against the Steelers and I would be quite surprised if they ran up the kind of huge point total they had been earlier this season. In fact, I think as other teams start to find effective strategies against the Patriots, those days may be behind us this year for good.
If the Pats’ D is playing business as usual, that could mean game over; Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers offense have been overlooked in favor of Brady and the Patriots as well as Peyton Manning and the Colts, but they are looking solid this year as well.
The Patriots have their best chance to lose the undefeated season this week, I think, than any other week. Worse, the Steelers, already with a chip on their shoulders, definitely know that.
I don’t like to predict wins or scores (too superstitious). But I will predict that this game will make last week’s rodeo against the Ravens look tame by comparison.
