Patriots charged up for west coast action

The New England Patriots had their first BIG win of the season beating the Ravens at home after the bye week. Then before you could flip the page to see the next scheduled game, the NFL scene changed dramatically to player safety and helmet-to-helmet hits.

The Patriots own safety Brandon Meriweather was fined and partially benched for a flagrant launch hitting TE Todd Heap and putting him out of action with a stinger for a a portion of the game.

The Patriots back to work on Wednesday this week, chose to ingore the Ravens game and everything not associated with the San Diego Chargers.

Patriots rookie RB activated to play Chargers

With the injuries to Patriots running backs LaMont Jordan and Laurence Maroney, the team activated rookie running back BenJarvis Green-Ellis from the practice squad. Fans in Patriot Nation were enamoured with his name as in contains the names of various Patriots players (do you know the players are?)
Green-Ellis played fairly well as a rookie during training camp and he should some action today with Sammy Morris and Kevin Faulk. San Diego will be up for this game against New England so at least Green-Ellis will be able to rotate in and out giving Morris a break.
It will be interesting to see Green-Ellis’ running style at NFL speed and how the Patriots will use him. Will he come out of the back field as well for catches? Do they trust his blocking skills?
This is a great opportunity for the rookie, but also makes you wonder about Maroney and his toughness to play in the NFL. Mr KoolAid had always commented it would take a bunch of players to knock him out of the playing field as he would never run off teh sideline. Last week we clearly saw him rush out of bounds instead of turning up-filed for a first down. The expectation of an explosive back hitting holes and gaining yardage from agressiveness has been disappointing as we have only seen the potential a few times.
It is still too early to call Maroney a bust, but the fact remains is that he is not even the first option at running back on the team.
Jordan’s absence will be felt as he a the big bull runner that can push the pile and move the chains or score touchdowns on short yardage.
I think the game will be close tonight and as long as the Patriots do notfall too far behind and have to rely on quarterback Matt Cassel’s arm to win the game, I think the Patriots will win.
If the Chargers take an early lead and the Pats do have to rely on Cassel, I think he will get them back in the game and close enough to win, but it will come down to who has the ball at the end of the game.

Patriots players contribute off the field

Football players from the New England Patriots and around the NFL are associated with multiple charity organizations and attend charity events.
Offensive Lineman Matt Light and his Light Foundation have been hosting various events over the last few years.

This year in June, the Light Foundation will bring together Native American youth and youngsters from Rhode Island for a two-week outdoor experience with a five-day football camp. The event will support the local Northern Cheyenne Boys & Girls Club.
Light recently spent a week on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation hunting buffalo. The meat from that harvest will help feed hundreds of local children from the Boys & Girls Club
Light is also planning a July golfing event in Ireland. As part of the Southwest Ireland Charity Golf Tour, Light, a few other NFL players and fans will be touring Ballybunion Old Course, the Waterville Course, The Dooks Links, Tralee, and Ring of Kerry. All proceeds will go to the Light Foundation.

Not perfect, but Patriots head to Super Bowl

In a game that started offensively completely opposite from last weeks win versus the Jacksonville Jaguars, the New England Patriots are heading to the Super Bowl!
Although Philip Rivers was hurt, he played the entire game for the Chargers. His gutsy performance is not indicative from the stats of 19 of 37 for 211 yards and two interceptions, but let me tell you… he made a few throws that Brett Favre would have been proud of! OK – he is no Favre, but being injured he did pretty well.
If anything can be said about the Chargers it was how much they missed Ladainian Tomlinson. He played sparingly for 2 for 5 yards and only ran once for one yard.
That being said, I was one person against Rivers throwing abilities being injured, but he carved up the New England defense utilizing Vincent Jackson and Chris Chambers for a combined 183 yards receiving.
As mentioned in a previous post, turnovers would play a major part of the game. Tom Brady threw for 209 yahds, two touchdowns and 3 interceptions.

Randy's all clear, and game day is here

Well, now I feel like a horse’s ass.
Since I wrote my post when the Randy Moss news first came out, further detail has been revealed about the “battery” in this case, the injuries suffered and what “would not allow her to seek medical treatment” means.

My communications with Mr. McGill began last Wednesday. He told me that Randy had intentionally hurt his client

To repeat or not to repeat? Patriots D an answer to the question.

Every team in the NFL face the challenges of winning a championship. Each owner and coach are competitive in having the best team on the field and having the right game plan to win. The players are to keep themselves physically and mentally in shape to execute the myriad of plays to win offensively, defensively and through special teams.
As is often the case, once having won a championship the challenge is to stay at the top of your game and execute a winning strategy (not necessarily the same strategy) in order to retain your title. The most recent example: the Indianapolis Colts failed to reach the AFC title game by losing to the San Diego Chargers.
The Chargers are looking to avenge last year’s defeat in the playoffs and expect to come into Foxboro and beat the New England Patriots in the AFC Championships.
Meanwhile, the 17-0 Patriots are looking to play a full 60 minutes and win the AFC Championship after last year’s heart breaking lose to the Colts even with a huge half-time lead.
So who has the edge in determination? It is still too early to tell. Both are preparing for the game as they normally do. Although the Chargers are talking a bit in the media (above the NFL required media hype machine), the Chargers know who the Patriots are and have to execute the perfect game plan versus the Patriots for 60 minutes.
The Patriots are not talking in the media (only for the required NFL media hype) and know they too must execute their plan for 60 minutes and play perfectly in order to win as well. In typical Belichickian fashion, Coach Belichick is still building up the Chargers commenting:

Turning over the turnover numbers

One of the bigger storylines this week leading up to the Patriots/Chargers AFC Championship Game has been the Chargers extraordinary ability to create turnovers. Well, one of the bigger football-related storylines anyway. As in any game played in the NFL, usually the team who wins the turnover battle wins the game. This is the case even more during the playoffs, where each game could be your last, thus making each mistake that much more critical. The teams in the postseason are all great teams and can capitalize on a mistake much better than say, the Oakland Raiders (sorry guys!). For these final two teams in the AFC, it is a case of strength vs. strength.

(All stats were compiled from NFL.com)
The Chargers were the best team in the NFL this year in turnover differential, being +24 in that category. Anotonio Cromartie in particular made creating turnovers his calling card, leading the NFL with 10 interceptions in the regular season, despite not starting the season at corner. He also added another pick this postseason to his total last week against Peyton Manning and returned it for a touchdown. I know, it was called back on a holding penalty, but that was a pretty bogus call. When the Patriots faced the Chargers in Week 2 of the regular season, Cromartie was not yet in the starting lineup. The Patriots, however, are not too far behind San Diego in the turnover differential category, having a +16 mark in the regular season. That was good enough for third best in the NFL, behind SD and the Colts (+18). Asante Samuel again led the Patriots in interceptions with 6.
While the Chargers are the best in turnover differential, the Patriots are the best team in the NFL at securing the football. They lost only 6 fumbles and Tom Brady threw only 8 picks. Backup QB Matt Cassel also threw 1 pick in mop-up duty, but he is unlikely to see any action Sunday (one can only hope). Philip Rivers, on the other hand, threw 15 interceptions in the regular season, though he is listed as Doubtful for the game on the Injury Report. If backup QB Billy Volek starts, he threw one pick in the regular season in limited action versus Tennessee in Week 14. As a team, the Chargers lost 8 fumbles during the regular season.
This matchup of strength vs. strength will likely go a long way to determining who represents the AFC in the Superbowl. Ron Jaworski stated on ESPN’s Sportscenter Friday night that the Chargers will likely drop 8 back in coverage like Jacksonville did and force Tom Brady to be patient and take his checkdowns. If they do this, I think the Chargers will most definitely lose. Brady is patient enough

Patriots play and win as a team

The New England Patriots have the best record in the NFL having gone 17-0 so far in the 2007 season.
The record of 19-0 is in sight, but the Patriots are not focused on that point. They are looking to win the next game versus the San Diego Chargers.
Does the win bring the team one more game closer to destiny and dynasty? To hear it from the individual players you would nto think so. Being true to

Brady is 'alright', Rivers dances and TO cries

As I sit here contemplating what to write, I have to wonder what others are thinking about the Patriots and the playoffs this weekend..
Interestingly, it doesn’t take long on the internet to find out that Jaguars rookie safety Reggie Nelson thinks Tom Brady is ‘alright’, but no bag of potato chips.
More then a few people were outraged at poor Philip Rivers as he taunted the Colts fans from the sidelines. Um – wasn’t Rivers suppose to be injured? Like his knee or something? If so why was he jumping up and down yelling at the Colts fans?
Aha – I know why. During the intermission when the NFL was passing out the Punt, Pass and Kick competition the Colts fans booed the 14 year old girl wearing a Patriots jersey. So thank you Rivers for standing up for her! It is much appreciated.
I almost (ok not really) feel sorry for TO. I too nearly broke down in tears – trying not to laugh. geez gimme a break…
Oh and by the way, the Cowboys lost because Jessica Simpson was not at the game but visiting her uncle Homer.

Patriots coach heading to Atlanta

Patriots director of scouting, Tom Dimitroff, has agreed to become the new general manager of the Atlanta Falcons.
Dimitroff has been with the Patriots since 2002 and helped bring in a slew of players that contributed to the 2003 and 2004 Super Bowl Championships.
The biggest credit for Dimitroff coming from this season are the selections of Asante Samuel, Logan Mankins, Dan Koppen and Vince Wilfork all being selected to the Pro-Bowl.
I hope for Dimitroff things go well in Hotlanta. Personally I think it is a big jump from director of scouting to general manager, but heck what do I know about football operations?
When I can afford a team – I will just hire Parcells – ha! NOT!
