Porter at it again

Miami Dolphins linebacker Jerry Porter and his ever-flapping gums are no strangers to Patriots fans or, for that matter, any NFL fan. Porter’s mouth is in a constant state of readiness, and is often in use, belittling his opponents and doing a hefty dose of trash talking. That trend has continued this week leading up to the big AFC East showdown between the Pats and the Fins this Sunday at Gillette Stadium. During a conference call with New England reporters earlier in the week, Porter started out by explaining just how he feels about the Patriots, and those feelings didn’t start when he joined the division.

My feelings toward New England go back further. It goes back to my Pittsburgh days. I felt a certain way, after some things came out, way back when I was in Pittsburgh, some AFC championships I lost to them, couple times. Come to figure out a few months later why we lost. So yeah, I have a natural hate for them. Period. And that’s just gonna be with me forever.

Herald reporter who fanned flames of "SpyGate" removed from Patriots beat

I’m of two minds about the news that John Tomase has been removed from the Patriots beat. Tomase was the author of the now-famous article published Feb. 2, 2008, just before the Patriots faced the Giants in Super Bowl XLII, which publicized the allegations of unnamed sources that the Patriots had filmed a Rams walk-through prior to Super Bowl XXXVI.

Patriots to start mini camp with revamped defense

After completing their recent new joiners and passing camp, the New England Patriots are set to begin their full sqaud mini camp June 6th through 8th.
There are a few new faces that have been receiving good reviews so far. Veterans safety Tank Wiliams and linebacker Victor Hobson have been playing well and showing they are catching on to the Patriot’s system.
Williams has the opportunity to contribute at safety and special teams, but has also been playing linebacker in cover situations similar to the role Rodney Harrison has played to cover tightends or runningbacks out of the backfield.
Hobson coming from the outside linebacker position in Jest the 3-4 system is learning the ropes at inside linebacker in the Patriots 3-4 system. Hobson has shown a bit of speed while dropping back in coverage and hopefully that continues to show through the full squad mini camp as Hobson is still adjusting to the new position and Patriots system.
The addition of another veteran to the team duringthe offseason should also provide help to the Patriots defense. Defensive backs coach Dom Capers brings a tough style to the team that seems to have been lost in the defensive backfield that past few years as the loss of Ty Law and injuries to Rodney Harrison left a bit of gap in terms of toughness and tackling. Eugene Wilson never caught on fire after his first season and he along with Asante Samuel and Randall gay are no longer with the Patriots.
Capers has a good set of safeties to work with and the Patriots will need to find the future with Harrison probably gone after 2008 when his contract ends.
The question remains the same at cornerback as it has the last few offseasons. The difference this year is the unproven talent on the roster with the likes of youngsters Mike Richardson, Atwain Spann, Terrence Wheatley and Jonathan Wilhite joining oft injured Ellis Hobbs. This is where Capers will earn his money in the weeks ahead as mini camps turn into training camp.
Much ado about the roster as most have probably read by now. The end of NFL Europa has limited the number of players allowed in training camp from 86 to 80 players. While this will save a few bucks from the owners pockets, it means more reps for the players

Belichick on CBS News

Bill Belichick sat down with CBS’s Armen Keteyian to discuss Spygate and Matt Walsh. Belichick was about as fired up as he’s going to get in public, and was very adament about who and what Walsh was and wasn’t to him and the team. You can view the video of the interview at the Patriots’ website. Here are some highlights:

Walsh's SpyGate smoking gun shoots blanks

Matt Walsh, the controversial former video employee of the New England Patriots, has certified in writing that he is turning over eight stolen video tapes containing stolen signals from his time with the Pats. However, he does not have a tape containing video of the St. Louis Rams walk-through before Super Bowl XXXVI. This alleged video was the “smoking gun” that garnered much media attention before the Super Bowl against the New York Giants earlier this year. It appears that Walsh was simply looking for his 15 minutes of fame, and this whole controversy can finally be laid to rest.

Last piece of SpyGate puzzle: Walsh and NFL agree to meet

The NFL and former New England Patriots employee Matt Walsh have finally agreed on a deal where Walsh will return all of the items by May 8, namely videotapes, that he kept from his employment with the Patriots. He will also meet with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on May 13, 2008, to discuss the Pats’ videotaping procedures. In return, the NFL and the Patriots have agreed not to sue Mr. Walsh and the NFL will indemnify him of any expenses, legal or otherwise, that he incurs as part of the interview process. Rather than speculate, I’m simply going to wait and see what is contained on the tapes and also what the interview with Goodell yields. Keep in mind that the Patriots, as you can read in their statement, have said that they never authorized the videotaping of the Rams’ walk-through practice before the Superbowl in 2002. That walk-through taping is what has been the lightning rod behind this whole matter. Whether this tape exists or not, we shall soon see, but the Pats have already denied any knowledge or authorization of such a tape. How the NFL handles this, should it exist, will be interesting to follow as we enter some “down time” after the NFL Draft. Below you can read statements from the NFL, Walsh’s attorney, and the New England Patriots. Again, I will reserve judgement until we find out exactly what Walsh has.
