Patriots disappoint in 16-9 loss against rival Jets
There was one operative difference between the Patriots game last week
and this week’s effort against the New York Jets: the opponent.
Against Buffalo, which chose to run a prevent defense in the second
half vs. the Patriots, letting Brady hang back and make reads, the Jets
blitzed Brady first and asked questions later. There always seemed to
be a defender free to bust through the offensive line and flush Brady
from the pocket or knock him on his ass. Obviously, the offensive line
had a hand in this – Brent called in his preview post for
improvement from this unit, but they were clearly overwhelmed today.

Patriots pull out a wild one on Monday Night Football
A recap of a season opener that seemed to turn every prediction and expectation on its head–
First Half
Tom Brady in the throwback uniform means it now requires that much less imagination to picture him coming in to Super Bowl XX instead of Tony Eason.
And while he ultimately put in a performance far beyond Eason’s in this game, it seemed the spirit of the ham-handed signal-caller from back in the day was haunting Brady in the early going on the Monday Night big stage.
And then there were 53
The deadline for the NFL final roster cut down to 53 was earlier today by 6 p.m. The Patriots had made some moves prior to the deadline, but now the smoke has cleared and the 2009 New England Patriots are set (for now). History has shown that this roster is certainly not set in stone, and there could be moves made before the season opener next Monday night. For now, let’s take a look at the final roster.
Patriots Preseason Game 1 — Standout Players
Making note of the standouts among the familiar faces, new acquisitions and draftees we finally got to see in action tonight–
Tom Brady — All eyes were on Brady, of course, as he made his return to the field following last year’s knee injury. The same guy who didn’t take a snap in last year’s preseason (and I swear, the way that actually prepared Cassel and let him get to know the rest of the team better, it’s like they knew.) played two full quarters of football today, and was, as Over the Monster’s Randy Booth put it in a Facebook status post, “in full on FU mode.”

Vick won't stick in New England
The NFL rumor mill has been running wild the last couple of days speculating on whether the New England Patriots would sign former Falcons QB and convicted felon Michael Vick. As I’m sure you all know, Vick was convicted for funding an illegal pit bull dog fighting ring that resulted in the deaths of numerous pit bulls. Besides serving time in prison, Vick was suspended indefinitely from the NFL but has now been conditionally reinstated. Now, unfortunately, much of what is being talked about is whether the Pats will/should sign the recently reinstated Vick instead of training camp, which opened Thursday, and all of the competitions and questions that accompany it.

Pats dominate ESPN's "All-Decade" rankings
For the past week, ESPN has put together lists of the top players, teams, moments, coaches, etc of the opening decade of the new millennium. What shouldn’t be a surprise to anybody with an impartial bone in their body, the Patriots dominate many of the lists due to their tremendous success this decade, including winning 3 Super Bowls in a 4-year span. These types of lists, of course, always carry their share of controversies and arguments over snubs and “How could you include that guy?” The following is a re-cap of where the Patriots fit into the lists as well as my Patriots “All-Decade” team for 2000 – 2010.

Tom Brady takes the field as Patriots start OTAs
As the media takes note of the return of Tom Brady throwing the football during the Patriots OTAs, there are many of us from Patriot Nation that are relieved to know he can now prepare to start the 2009 NFL season.
The best news, though has to come from Randy Moss and Wes Welker as they have expressed their happiness in the return of Brady and how comfortable they both feel in the Patriots system.
Welker was interviewed by SI’s Peter King on MMQB and Moss was interviewed by ESPN’s Tim Graham.

What to do after Patriots lose out on Taylor
With the way the Patriots ran their draft, most writers in the media and more then a few fans in Patriot nation (myself included) figured the Patriots had the inside track on DE/OLB jason Taylor.
After playing in Nick Saban’s 3-4 defense, one could say he was Taylor made to join the Patriots and replace fan favorite Mike Vrabel who was traded to Kansas City.
After no word from Taylor or the Patriots, Miami has since announced it has signed Taylor to a one-year deal worth about $1.5 million.
Another surprise pick: WR Brandon Tate
Tate could be a classic example of value pushed down to later levels of the draft. Were it not for a knee injury (granted, a significant knee injury in which he tore both the ACL and MCL), the consensus among the talking heads on ESPN is that the speedy, versatile Tate would’ve been a first-round pick.

Patriots by position: Wide Receiver
Continuing our series evaluating the Patriots’ roster and needs heading in to the draft…
Wide receiver is not an especial area of need for the Patriots. They have six WRs currently on the roster, including the newly-signed free agent Joey Galloway, who will join Randy Moss and Wes Welker among the veterans in the receiving corps. Further down the depth chart are Greg Lewis, Sam Aiken and Matthew Slater. To be blunt about it, as long as Moss and Welker are on the staff, I’m not worried.
