MGP Remediation

Con Edison

Project Overview

Manufactured gas holding tanks were once the marvels of a developing society hungry for gas energy, but now create overwhelming environmental challenges for the communities they once served.

When Con Edison retired its manufactured gas plant in Astoria, Queens, they were faced with more than 8,000 tons of MGP waste that needed to be remediated.

MVN created several custom-designed remediation techniques for the project, including deep pit excavation, on-site solidification using centrifuge technology, and the development and application of safe work practices, which resulted in zero lost-time accidents.

MVN coordinated efforts with both Con Edison and regulatory agencies to ensure full compliance with all operational and environmental standards, and our crews operated 24 hours a day to meet the project deadline.
